9/11 masterminds to be tried in Lower Manhattan

Gitmo needs to be closed. I have more faith in our judicial system and Constitution than you naysayers. -
9/11 masterminds to be tried in Lower Manhattan
PastaJoe replied to bills_fan's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
If they were tried before tribunals, they wouldn't need trials now. If they have to be put on trial, the appropriate place is either NYC or Washington, where the attacks occurred. In the open, for everyone to see. -
He's just using Buffalo to raise his price when he goes to Dallas.

9/11 masterminds to be tried in Lower Manhattan
PastaJoe replied to bills_fan's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
If the previous administration had actually made a decision on how to process these detainees and actually went forth with the prosecutions, this would all be a moot point. But given that they left this on the big pile of trash to be cleaned up after they left, having the trials in NYC is appropriate. That is where their acts of terrorism occurred. NYC has handled civilian trials against terrorists previously, they were brought to justice, and are now incarcerated on U.S. soil. It was shown before and will be shown again that we are a nation of laws, and that we will not allow terrorists to scare us into lowering ourselves to their level. I have faith in our justice system and our security services. -
I started to go numb before the first game when they cut the offensive coordinator and left tackle right before the regular season. That told me they didn't have a clue about what they had and what they needed. I'm cutting the rookie linemen Woods and Levitre slack this year because they've been thrown into a lousy situation where there's a lack of leadership and they're switching lineman around them every week. And then they throw Levitre out to left tackle yesterday after Bell got hurt. You're telling me that Walker wasn't as good as all the other options they've been trying? Swallow your pride and bring him back if he's still available.

Someone Please Explain the Palin Hatred!

I'm so glad the level-headed people on the right are here to show us how to give the proper respect for women in politics like Hillary and Pelosi. -
RNC ends abortion coverage for employees
PastaJoe replied to PastaJoe's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
It's not a stand-alone insurance policy, but part of the comprehensive coverage that was part of the policy. Nobody plans on having any illness or medical procedure. -
The Republican National Committee will no longer offer employees an insurance plan that covers abortion, Politico reports this morning. "Money from our loyal donors should not be used for this purpose," Chairman Michael Steele said in a statement. "I don't know why this policy existed in the past, but it will not exist under my administration. Consider this issue settled." The decision follows a story by Politico on Thursday disclosing that the RNC's insurance plan with Cigna has covered elective abortion since 1991. The party officially opposes abortion rights. It's platform calls the procedure "a fundamental assault on innocent human life." http://content.usatoday.com/communities/on...its-employees/1 Ironic that while they've been complaining about the current healthcare proposals, they didn't even know what was in their own plan for almost the past 2 decades.

It's long overdue to try these terrorists, and NYC has been able to handle it in the past with the trial of sheik Rahman. The first step in finally closing Gitmo. And feel free to build a supermax prison in the field behind my house if that will help the process. -
I never said anything about surveys. I just answered the request for a link on the daily briefings. It wasn't just Bush, but the Republican Congress, many of whom are still serving and want to be in charge again, who increased spending. I love how nobody who supported these people want to take ownership now that it doesn't suit their current political agenda.

While federal spending under a Republican president and Congress continued to increase. "Hey, let's spend even more AND bring in even less at the same time!". But since it was Republicans doing it, the Teabaggers were content to remain silent.

New Gallup Poll on Health Care Reform
PastaJoe replied to Magox's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Yesterday's Republicans are todays Independents, as the percentage of Americans identifying themselves as Republicans have dropped to the low 20%s. The absurdity of the opposition to reform and the level of vitriol was displayed last week at the rally sponsored by the House Republican leadership that was officially billed as a G.O.P. press conference with the display of large signs showing piles of bodies at Dachau with the caption “National Socialist Healthcare.” Anyone who characterizes this reform effort as a government takeover of healthcare and socialized medicine is simply either uninformed or purposely trying to misinform others to further their political agenda. Reform does not equal takeover. -
New Gallup Poll on Health Care Reform
PastaJoe replied to Magox's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Or simply put, most people are as misinformed about healthcare reform as many of you on this board have been for months now. -
You make it sound like these people are all currently paying for private insurance, and now they're all going to just drop it to go to a public option. The reality is that if they have private healthcare, they're going to keep it. For those that don't have it, we're already subsidizing their care through the most expensive process of not receiving primary preventative care, and waiting for them to use the emergency rooms for all their care. We subsidize in either scenario, so why not do it in the least expensive way, by offering preventative care that reduces and/or eliminates their need to use emergency rooms, and treats them in the early stages of a medical condition before it escalates into more expensive procedures and medicines.

Nasty women's soccer player at New Mexico
PastaJoe replied to Beerball's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Finally something worth watching in a soccer match. -
Really? There were 2 House races and the Democrats won both, thus actually gaining an additional member in Congress, which by the way is where bills are voted on.

Well I'll take socialism over theocracy. Unless and until the GOP stops letting the right wing theocrats dictate whether a candidate passes their litmus tests, the GOP will continue to be marginalized in the northeast and west coast. It's a battle between the fiscal and social conservatives in the GOP.
-
And Republicans have no quams about cutting taxes for the wealthy but not cutting budgets. They had their opportunity to cut spending, reform health care, and fix Social Security and Medicaid when they had control of the White House and Congress. How'd that work out? And now we should believe the next bunch of Republicans will be different?
-
So only the socialist programs that they don't directly benefit from are bad. That's like being a little bit pregnant.
-
Ask your older friend and the majority of senior citizens who fear socialism if they're willing to give up the socialistic programs of Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.
-
I'd take the one who plays behind the worst offensive line. That way they'll be ready for what awaits them with the Bills.

The implosion of what remains of the Republican party
PastaJoe replied to Bishop Hedd's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Just to clarify, I don't know if the district numbers changed over the years, but... "The outcome made history in the rural House district covering Northern and Central New York, one of the geographically largest east of the Mississippi. It is the first time someone other than a Republican has represented the heart of the region – Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Franklin counties – since the GOP was established in 1856 and the first Republicans were seated in the House in 1857. The last Democrat elected to a House seat from the region was Frances E. Spinner, who represented St. Lawrence County in Congress from 1855 to 1857." http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/200...wins_hard-.html "A battle for a vacant Republican U.S. House seat worked against the GOP in upstate New York. The contest to fill the seat sparked a vicious internal fight between GOP conservatives and moderates. The struggle was viewed as a proxy for a national struggle between activists arguing the GOP slipped by betraying conservative values and officials warning a rightward move would further alienate an increasingly independent-minded electorate. The split resulted in the election of Bill Owens -- the first Democratic congressman from that region since the late 1800s." http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/11/04/ele...aces/index.html Like I said, I don't think the races yesterday were a referendum on Obama for either side, but dealt more with state/local issues. The moderate Republicans in the 23rd probably looked at Hoffman's social views, and considered what impact he would have on Fort Drum and revitalizing the former Griffiss air base area, and decided to go with a moderate like they had represent them before. If anything, this win will enbolden Democrats in Congress that they can still win in a Republican district while advocating Democratic policies. But I expect it will also energize the far right, as they set their sights next on Charlie Christ in Florida, who is in a Republican Senate primary with conservative Marko Rubio.
