I think they keep both. Cassel would be the #2 and would play in a game or two if Taylor is dinged up. I think EJ would be a better answer at the position of Tyrod is lost for an extended period of time.

Fred Jackson expected to sign with Seattle(update-signed)
Maddog69 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I couldn't think of a better place for him to go. That's great. I hope we face him in the Superbowl. -
So Whalley cut Freddy and kept Brown even through Rex likes Freddy and not Brown? Not buying it. Freddy was as good as gone when Rex was hired. Not sure why. But it was reported he was on the outs almost immediately. The Pegulas stepped in and asked Rex to keep Freddy and give him a chance in camp.

I believe there is more to it. I think Freddy is a vocal guy in the locker room and if the coaches were planning on reducing Fred's role and making him a third stringer, I'm sure that would not have gone over well with Fred and he would have been vocal about that displeasure. Fred has been a strong voice over a very bad period of football for the Bills. It's possible he became too comfortable with losing. Whatever it was, I just don't think Rex wanted him around. It was rumored that Fred's days were numbered as soon as Rex was hired.

Who steps up as the leader with Fred gone?

I don't care where he lands. Wherever it is, I wish him well unless he's facing the Bills.

I think it indicates that we as fans don't get to see everything that goes into making the decision. Practices, meetings, film study, work habits, interactions with teammates, etc. We only judge our opinions based on limited data and preconceived notions.

Will the Bills save $5.5M and take a risk?
Maddog69 replied to KRT88's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I believe they only would get the cap savings if Cassel is cut prior to week one. If he's on the roster for week 1 his salary is guaranteed for the year. (I might be wrong but I believe this is the case because he is a vested veteran). -

Exactly, the $4.15m they would save can be rolled over to next year when they will undoubtedly be paying Marcel close to $20m per year. -

Devil's advocate: Cassel has had 11 yrs experience so for him to pick those things up quicker than EJ is understandable. Once EJ has seen them a few times, I would expect him to get better at picking up on them. Experience is great, but the only way to get it is to play. -

Doesn't this sort on contradict the message from your contact? If the decision is already made and starting EJ is just to mess with Indy and try to drum up trades, doesn't that show that he doesn't have a fair shot at the job even though he's performed equally as well in preseason games as the others? More intrigue. -

In my opinion, that's a bit of an exaggeration. I expect EJ to be on our roster this season no matter what happens tomorrow. And in the off chance he is cut, he will be picked up IMMEDIATELY (and probably start for the Jets in a few weeks) Yep. Rich Gentzler on The Fan -
EJ Will Start Pittsburgh Game

That's exactly the problem with having 3 guys performing adequately and not having one guy obviously take the job. Whomever is the starter will be under intense scrutiny and the first mistake will draw a chorus of "They should've gone with..." Everyone always loves the backup. -

They've already started. Heard a radio guy today say "Well EJ will have Freddy and Bryce brown back, that not fair to Taylor" -

Again - Any of us could guess those. The only guarantee was that it won't be EJ, this seems fairly obvious to most everybody. Roman wants Cassell. Makes sense. So if they go TT, he says "Rex overruled Roman". LOL. I doubt it. An what the heck do I know? I don't have sources and don't claim to. Maybe he does. Maybe he doesn't. Interesting either way. -

Right. But no detail on the decision either way he can say he was right. That's why it's suspicious -
EJ Will Start Pittsburgh Game

But that's the beauty of it. There's no way to prove it's not true unless EJ starts week 1. Which is extremely unlikely. If EJ gets traded (not gonna happen) - Metz says "told ya so" If he is not traded - Metz says - "No viable trade option" If Cassel or Taylor are named starter - Metz says "That's who I thought it was going to be all along". Its not really a concrete scoop that can be proven one way or the other. -

If that is truly the throught process at OBD, I would lose respect for Rex and Whalley. Shouldn't be more focused on getting their starter ready for the season than playing meaningless games with Indy or facilitating non-existent trade possibilities? It just seems far-fetched to me. -

that tweet doesn't necessarily mean EJ bought them. EJ might just have known a guy or a store that had them for Cordy to buy. -

No offense, but this doesn't sound like something that came from a person close to the situation. It sounds like a take from a WGR caller. Indy doesn't give a crap who starts our 3rd preseason game and the only way EJ's trade value is affected by this game is if he gets hurt. You're possibly right that the coaches have their minds made up already but the rest of this is suspicious to me. Just my opinion. -

I assume that every team will have to prepare for both if Cassel and TT are #1 and #2. Because, if Cassel starts, there is an excellent chance that Roman will use TT on a handful of plays per game. -

The history of the league is also littered with mobile, athletic QBs who have had great success using their legs to make plays (Cunninghan, Young, Tarkenton, Vick, Kaepernick, Wilson, etc). The best ones are the ones that can do both. That is what we need to see from Taylor. I saw a little of it from him last week. Scrambling while still looking for a target downfield. I like what I've seen. Need to see more. Would I love the Bills to have a prototypical pocket passer like Manning, Brady, Luck - HELL Yes. But we don't. So we need to use the things out QBs do well. I don't want the Bills to take away Taylors instincts and physical gifts and turn him into a pocket passer because they are scared to get him hurt. Let him play his game and lets see what he can do. Did you see what our defense did to Rodgers and Green Bay last year? Luck needs to worry about our defense as much as our Defense has to worry about Luck. He might be "Lucky" to come out alive. (pun intended). -
Funny. I heard the exact opposite from a guy who used to be an on-air host at GR.

Agreed. I like Howard and Jeremy. I just can't stand Schopp and Bulldog.
