There was no "reaching" necessary. The Bills could have selected OT, DT, DE or QB and not "reached" given the talent on the board. The Bills just used their first round pick at once of the few spots that didn't need to be addressed - at least not that early. Fred Jackson might have been the best player on the team last year and they draft a top 10 guy to replace him. Let's tread some more water - been doing it for 10 years now, I guess a few more years won't matter much.

Bills and Rams interested in trading for Mcnabb
MDH replied to Welcome To Pegulavilla's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Because they have a legitimate alternative at QB whereas the Bills don't. I wouldn't mind McNabb but the Bills better not overpay for his services. This franchise can't afford to be giving up too many draft picks. Also, your post makes it seem like QBs who move to other teams will have no success. I mean, why did their teams let them go if they still have good years? Except Kurt Warner, Brett Favre & Drew Brees all say otherwise... -
Regarding the viewpoint that Maybin is too small
MDH replied to BobbyC81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If the Bills do end up going to a 3-4 I think we can expect Maybin to be moved to LB where his size would be just right. Let's hope he's smart enough to be able to handle making the transition. -
Yeah, because Wilson has recently shown he deserves the benefit of the doubt. You know, since he routinely puts a winner on the field these days...

How much does Gailey help Marshawn Lynch
MDH replied to Mike in Syracuse's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm perfectly happy with Jackson being the man and the Bills using a low draft pick or brining in a lower tier FA to fill the #2 RB spot. Lynch's production just isn't worth the hassle. -
Yeah, I wish they'd go up there and say they want guys who can't teach football...

But he's special and needs his own thread to express every opinion! -
Lynch isn't good trade bait. Do you really think that all the talent evaluators in the league don't know what Bills fans know? It will take draft picks to get McNabb - I don't see anybody taking Lynch off our hands. An average back for 1st round money usually isn't what teams are looking for.

I haven't seen Big Fan but it's misleading to say it's "done" by the same guy who "did" "The Wrestler." "The Wrestler" was directed by Darren Aronofsky (who also wrote and directed "The Fountain", "Requiem for a Dream" and "Pi" - all excellent films.) Big Fan was written and directed by the same guy who wrote "The Wrestler." Might be a small quibble for most but it's a big difference to me. Anyway, I'll check out Big Fan when I get a chance - sounds pretty funny. And yeah, I also love streaming netflix though I barely have time to keep up with stuff I DVR and rent on Blu Ray as it is.

None of this changes unless Ralph is out of the picture.

Thought this deserved a bump. Nobody would turn down the Vols huh? Also, nice job editing the original post to try and save some face. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4825513 -

Apparently their #1 choice is Texas D Coord Will Muschamp. Would you be happy with having a college D coordinator making the move up to Bills HC? I wouldn't. -
Led the league in run D and run O. Have a rookie QB. Made it to the second round of playoffs. That team is not a fraud. They're solid everywhere but QB and with some experience that will likely be solid in another few years. That being said, SD will beat them soundly.

Russ Brandon - Is he the problem with our HC search?
MDH replied to ColdBlueNorth's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't think it's a bad move at all to reject the Bills HC position. Look at our last few hires. Neither Gregg Williams or Mike Mularkey have gotten a shot elsewhere. Generally speaking, if you fail at your first gig you likely won't get another. This isn't always the case but more often than not it is. Given this it's very important that a "hot" coordinator pick a good situation. Can anybody honestly say the Bills are a good situation? Look at our recent history. 10 years of losing with 3 HCs thrown in the scrap heap. Why would a young coordinator want this to be his first HC gig only to be the 4th HC thrown in the scrap heap never to be given another chance again? -
Maybe RW is going to announce that he is going to be euthanized this year so he can transfer ownership with no tax. Nobody would question his loyalty to the Buffalo area any longer after that!
-
People kill me. The Bills can't hire a coordinator for a HC because they've had failures in the past. They can't trade for a young QB because we've had failures in the past. These past failures have no bearing on future moves - when are people going to realize this? The failure of the Bills wasn't in bringing in a coordinator to be the HC it was brining in Williams and Mularky. Had they brought in John Fox or Marvin Lewis things might have been different. The problem wasn't trading for a young QB it was trading for RJ. Ask San Fran if they liked trading for Steve Young or if GB liked their trade for Brett Favre? Kolb might not end up being a good QB, there are no guarantees. But the "logic" behind someone not wanting him being "brining in a guy with 2 starts reminds me of RJ" just doesn't fly. Point to something in Kolb's game that makes you not want him, but please give a better argument than "too risky." As if giving up a 2nd round pick (or perhaps a 1st) for a guy who's been in the league a few years is somehow more risky than simply using the pick on an unproven college player with absolutely no NFL experience...
-
So the only way you suggest addressing the QB position is with a proven vet. No draft picks or young guys who have been in the league a few years? Because the only guys who aren't risky are the vets - and even THEY are risky. You never know how they'll respond in a new offensive system... Personally, I'd love to get hold of Kolb. Much rather have a young guy that another team has groomed for us than have a few years of good QB play from McNabb. Sure there is risk but the payoff is huge.
-
While all those things are true there has to be very good players at those positions available when the Bills draft. You don't just draft for need, you draft the best player possible at a position of need. The surest way to miss on players in the draft is to say "we need a QB here" and draft a QB at that spot no matter what. The Bills are in desperate need of LBs and if Rolando is on the board when the Bills pick and there's nobody higher on the Bills' board at the other spots you grab him.

Raiders to Fire Head Coach Cable Today
MDH replied to BillsGuyInMalta's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Let's bring in Cable as our HC. After all he has HC experience and that's obviously the most important factor... -
Philly "gave" into his demands AND gave up a 1st rounder. That team's decision makers continually have them in the playoffs. Somehow they can afford Peters plus have enough left over to put a competitive team on the field. Yeah, it sounds like Philly made a big mistake there and the Bills came out the winners...
-
I'd take Kolb over any of those guys (as long as it doesn't cost a 1st rounder - though perhaps a flip flop of first rounds) He could be a long term solution and he's already put in time in the NFL being groomed. The Rob Johnson comparison's will inevitably come up but I don't buy them. Just because one guy failed has no bearing on another QB 10 years later. Kolb was highly thought of coming out of Houston (hell, he was a high second round pick) and was to be groomed from the very start to replace McNabb. He's durable, accurate, and a pocket passer (no scrambling around taking sacks...at least from what I saw) In the two games he played he made quick decisions and let the ball fly. I'm all for flipping the sides here and having another team groom our future players instead of us always doing it for other teams...

It's the way they handled the situation from the start. At that point Peters didn't want to come back. The team let themselves get into a stand-off and they were destined to be the losers. Peters didn't lose - he got the money he wanted and is on a team that perennially is in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Bills have an offensive mess, an entire coaching staff that got fired and are sitting out of the playoffs for the 10th straight year. I understand why fans are upset with Peters. Fans have the luxury of letting themselves get all heated about these situations because they feel a player "slighted" them in some way. But the team does not have that luxury. This is a business decision. Peters was looking out for his best business interests and the team should have been looking out for theirs. Peters business decision appears to have been a solid one. The Bills appears to be another in a long line of botched decisions.

The two starters at OT on the NFC's Pro Bowl team are a guy the Bills had on their roster and a guy that many were calling to be drafted instead of Mike Williams. While the Bills still have one of the worst OLs in the league. But yeah, we're better off without those guys I'm sure.

What exactly do you know about Frazier that makes you so confident he couldn't succeed? -
The bottom line is we have no idea who was the ultimate decision maker for those picks. So go ahead and get your torch and pitch fork but just realize you might be storming the wrong castle.
