  1. Definitely agree with the low percentage comment -- but it makes the entire profession look bad.
  2. I guess that's what the courts are going to have to decide - if it was a lawful order. I would maintain that it isn't -- she was legally on her own property, legally recording a routine traffic stop. The officer had no legal basis to tell her to do anything. I'm obviously not a lawyer, but based on previous similar situations I've read about, it seems like the Rochester PD will not win this fight (although their apparent intimidation tactics may silence a bunch of people in the future, which is probably what they want anyway).
  3. She did obey - she was told not to be on the sidewalk, so she took a few steps back onto her own property. The officer continued to harass her.
  4. Which is why I printed out all of the relevant laws -- and if I would've been arrested because of it, so be it. I was willing to do that to establish my rights as a US citizen. Generally the police end up paying quite a lot of money to the wrongfully arrested folks - not that it seems to be a deterrent for them. I'm really surprised by the number of people saying, "She should've just done what she was told to do." Since when did we as a society just concede all of our liberties...?

  6. Yeah, the article I linked to says that three states - Illinois, Massachusetts, and Maryland - recently made it illegal to record police officers. I have a feeling that if challenged, those laws would not stand though. Regardless, it seems like police don't care about the law anyway - they'll harass/arrest you regardless of whether it's legal or not.
  7. No game in Minnesota either.
  8. That will NOT work. You can't use a signal splitter with satellite, you need a dedicated line coming off of a multiswitch. The reason is that there's two-way communication going on - the receiver talks to the multiswitch which talks to the LNB (arm) on the dish to figure out what to tune to. Check out the Radio Shack reviews on the splitter and you'll see what I mean: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103928 There's a multiswitch built into the dish, so a line(s) directly from the dish will work. Otherwise you connect to a multiswitch in your house and can run an RG6QS line(s) from there. There's an old, but still mostly relevant doc here: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=55509 Running an extra HDMI cable works too - but make sure you buy a good one (NOT Monster!) from BlueJeansCable.com or Monoprice.
  9. The law clearly states that the public can record the police and for good reason. If I was in her shoes, I would've done the exact same thing. Hell, before going to Washington DC for vacation, I made sure I very clearly knew all of the relevant photography laws (such as being able to legally photograph in the subway stations) because I had read plenty of stories of people being told that they can't photograph. Photography and videography rights are being stripped away slowly and it's a very dangerous path to be headed down. http://photocinenews.com/2010/06/03/videotaping-law-enforcement-illegal-in-3-states/
  10. Here, Neowin.net, Boston University's site (online degree), and slickdeals.net
  11. Figured some might like to read about this: http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/news/124355119.html The democrat running in one of the recall elections in Wisconsin used her school email address to illegally (allegedly) manage the campaign. I don't have a huge issue with that, but I do have an issue with the comment she made in email: "We are not supposed to use school email, but since all of our rights are being taken away, I don't frankly care," Moore wrote in a March 10 email to discuss an emergency teachers union meeting and the distribution of her recall papers. (the whole concept of a union contract being a "right" is also ludicrous, but hey).
  12. Who are you, the New England Patriots???
  13. The difference is those posts ARE useless. This one could win you a ~$1,500 prize.
  14. I went to the HP Discover conference a couple of weeks ago as a blogger - paid for by HP. I won a prize to giveaway based on the comments I received on my blog posts. So now I get to giveaway a free server to someone. Figured I'd share the link here so maybe a Bills fan will have a chance to win it. http://www.neowin.net/news/hp-discover-a-free-hp-microserver-giveaway-for-our-readers It'd make a great home fileserver (especially if you add another harddrive or two). All you have to do is post a comment in the Neowin thread, once per day. (details are in the link). Good luck!
  15. Ignorant... No education... Dennis Miller... Three things. Are you trying to start another debate?
  16. Don't blame them for trying. I just don't see what the point would be from the contributors' point of view...
  17. Now the union is asking teachers to provide their bank account information so the union can take money out directly: http://www.jsonline.com/news/education/123971539.html I wonder how that's going to work... But pBills - feel free to contact them, I'm sure they'd love your money. With limited collective bargaining, I'm not sure what they'll USE the money for, but hey...
  18. Other people have mentioned having a dedicated home office area where you do nothing but work from. I believe (consult with your tax adviser) that if you did this, you could write off that portion of your house, FWIW. Just don't ever ever ever use it for anything else. Personally, I wouldn't want to work from home full time. I like the flexibility of being able to do it whenever I want to -- but I think the office interactions are too important. There's a lot of things that are decided based purely on hallway conversations you have with people. Working at home, you miss that.
  19. Never been a fan of the white helmets.
  20. The only reason I know that is because a vendor took me to a hockey game last year and he had a pair of tickets. We used those to get in, but then found out that his company rented out a suite and that we could probably still get tickets for that, but the Will Call window is outside of the arena... So we asked if we could go talk to them, and they said sure - you can leave anytime as long as we scan your ticket. If there are no tickets available, we can scan you back in.
  21. I don't know about football, but I know that the Minnesota Wild let you leave and come back in. They scan your ticket as you leave, showing that you're gone, and then scan it back in when you return.
  22. When you put it like that, I think he is.... He's living it up with parties and vacations, while the rest of us scrape by... Good gig if you can get it.
  23. The airlines don't get that, the thieves do... My flight to Vegas Sunday morning wasn't full -- the flight attendant actually asked if I wanted to move back a row so that there was nobody next to me. Sign me up! The return flight was booked though.
  24. Ok, I asked my sister (who is an Asian Studies major and will possibly be moving to Japan in a year to teach English), and here's what she said: The package is of Taitsu-kun (Taitsu = English 'tights' and -kun is a title... so it's 'Mr. Tights'). It's a comedy duo, though I'm blanking on the names of the characters. Pierre is one, I believe. Either way, they're crazy. The flavor is salt and pepper.
  25. I usually try to do only carry-on. I was in Vegas for a conference last week (Sun-Fri) and was able to pack everything into a legal sized carry-on without any issues. Probably easier for guys to do though
