He had Josh Allen ranked 5th, behind Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield and Jackson, in that order. In other words, he was very, very wrong.
-
Pretty sure you’re thinking of Phil Simms here, not Chris. To my knowledge, Chris didn’t do a pre-draft QB ranking in 2016.

Jets' draft ammo is crazy right now

Another reason Gase is gone... -
Yeah, it’s a pretty low-cost gamble on a young QB whom a lot of people think might have some potential. I don’t think Darnold will pan out for them, but it’s certainly not impossible. To me, this shows that Carolina isn’t high on the QBs who are likely to be left after Lawrence, Wilson, and (probably) Jones are gone.

Come on, man. That's ridiculous. Becton is an absolute beast. He's going to be their LT for the next ten years. That alone makes it a pretty good draft. -
Nonsense. They are ditching Darnold because they don't think he's good enough and they think Zack Wilson is going to be better. The excuses people are willing to make for Darnold are endless.

Newsflash! The Jets' front office that squandered all that draft capital on Sam Darnold is, like Darnold himself, gone. There is no reason to believe that Douglas will do as poorly as their last GM. Nor is there any reason to believe Wilson will be as disappointing as Darnold. -
It’s being reported that the Panthers plan to exercise Darnold’s 5th year option, which means they won’t be taking a QB at 8. Yikes.
-
I don’t doubt that. I guess the question is how much has he developed? The only criticism I’ve heard of Lawrence is that there hasn’t been much noticeable improvement since his freshman year, although of course he was playing at a very high level even then.
-
He was also right with Herbert over Tua. I like his philosophy, which is is to downplay college stats (especially win-loss) and look at the context. WRT Lawrence, I’d be concerned that he’s played on a dominant team his whole career. Not to say he won’t be good in the NFL, but i think it makes him a tougher evaluation than some people think.
-
Not many current scouts are going to go public with their opinions no matter what, so I’m not sure what your point is. Simms put his name to it and as far as I can tell, he’s been more right than anyone else WRT QBs, going back to Mahomes in 2017 and JA in 2018.
-
Tyrod will never be a starter again either.
-
And according to Simms, there is more than one scout who has Wilson ranked ahead of Lawrence.
-
And I’m saying one scout’s opinion does not equal a consensus. Chris Simms, who’s got as good a record as anyone evaluating QBs for the draft, gives Wilson the highest grade of any QB the last two years—ahead of Burrow, Herbert and Lawrence—all of whom he liked a lot. Then why did Darnold return so little in trade, and why aren’t the Jets sticking with him over Wilson?
-
I assume he’s talking about Darnold’s draft grade, which, after three years of lousy play, we now know was wildly inflated. And we now know what Darnold is worth on the trade market—not much. So I’m not sure what Mel’s point was. That’s one scout. What did he think of Josh Allen?
-
I don’t believe that’s true.

True, but IMO Wilson has a better chance of becoming a franchise QB than Tua does. If Wilson is a as good as advertised, the Jets will become a problem. So far, Douglas looks like he knows what he’s doing. He’s got a lot to work with in the next two years. -
There’s really no evidence to suggest that Darnold—or David Carr—was ruined. Darnold played with the Jets the same way he played his last year at USC—terrible ball security and no standout skills. If he tears it up in Carolina, I’ll revisit this opinion, but I doubt I’ll have to.

I didn't say the Jets will be good this year, but I do think they will win a lot more games than they did last year. They had the worst coach in the league last year. They finally have a GM who seems to know what he's doing. They had a good draft last year and they have a ton of picks this year, including 6 in the top 107 picks. Next year they have two first rounders and two second rounders. I expect Wilson will be an upgrade from Darnold and Mr. Clean simply has to be an upgrade from Gase. So yes, I think the Jets will be much improved this year and if they hit on Wilson and Saleh, they could surpass the fish as the Bills' toughest AFCE competitor.
-
Fair enough. I just don't buy the notion that a QB like Darnold or Wilson can be "ruined" by the team that drafts them. And I also think the Jets are turning the corner and will no longer be a laughing stock, starting with this year...
-
Been doing some film work on him, eh? Please share...
-
Or just trade for Deshaun Watson...😀
-
Certainly can't fault him for the Jamal Adams trade...I don't recall what the Jets got back for L Williams, but that guy was a monster this year.
-
3d overall is too high for a guy who played almost no football last year and only started one season of 1-AA football. But Lance wouldn't be the first QB to be drafted too high. Everything I've read and heard says Shanahan is taking Jones.

Wanna bet?
