GM Cutting Over Fourteen Thousand Jobs

Yeah if there was a significant move up in gas prices, the US companies will likely be hurt the most. -

Yup and some of this is semantics. An SUV as we call them is basically a car in a slightly different configuration and those come is all sizes from very small to barge-like. It's really a stretch when it's reported that they are ceasing "car" production. It's more a case of discontinuing some of the traditional coupes and sedans in favor of cars of a different shape and category. That and companies like Ford will still sell the Fiesta and Focus (and refresh those models) in non-US markets so if they want to sell them or similar "cars" here again it won't take much to turn on the tap. For now it's about increasing margin per vehicle. SUV's and trucks are simply more profitable than cheaper cars. My guess is that GM/Ford/FCA will all re-introduce some "cars" to the US market in the not too distant future and most likely they will be electric or hybrids. -

GM is building some very good cars and trucks. On what basis do you say their products don't measure up? Different strokes for different folks but GM still has the highest market share of any car maker in the U.S. market. -

Trump ranted about companies moving production and workers out of the U.S. That's not the same thing as cutting payroll costs due to increases in other costs and declining sales. -

If we were firing tear gas on a large scale at those trying to enter illegally it would be great news. The more the better. -

Yes but American car buyers are different and the majority don't want tiny cars. Europe has had much higher gasoline and diesel prices for decades. The car companies cater to their regional markets. If U.S. buyers suddenly demand more small cars, U.S. car makers will sell them domestically. What does Trump have to do with GM cutting their costs due to declining auto sales? That's part of it. Sales of vehicles in the U.S. are declining overall after about 3 years of record numbers. It's a cyclical business to some extent. When record numbers buy new cars over a few years, fewer buyers are in the market for a while. Ford will be next to announce some cuts although they have been making cuts and moving older workers into retirement for the past year or so. Raw material cost increases are also driving cost cutting. Additionally the car companies are finding ways to bring cars to market faster and are doing so with more simulation and fewer hours invested by actual workers. -

Pensions funded by taxpayers need to go away. The majority of people contributing to the pensions of government workers can't fund their own retirements very well but are required to fund those of government workers. It's economic slavery. -
Nice game but Allen needs to pass

Yes and the lack of a running game from the running backs is very troubling. The backs need to run more and more effectively and Allen needs to run less. -

Right, because after a few starts on a team in transition his entire potential career can be judged. -
Maybe the events of 2016 yet to be fully unveiled have slowed him down.

When W. Bush left office I was happy. Had enough of him. He was a disappointment in many ways. However I have to admire how he has stayed very much quiet and humble since the end of his presidency and how he has not used the office to greatly enrich himself. There is respect there.

This is nothing more than one's opinion but I think Trump plans to use the IC abuse of 2016, the real meat of it, as a bargaining chip with the Dems to stave off the flood of investigations they want to start on him. I doubt the Dems will go for it so I expect political mudslinging and legal action like never seen before to happen after Mueller wraps up. Full on into 2020. -

Great matchup and a great game. -
Trump is guilty of not yet addressing fiscal responsibility. Trump has made some tiny efforts to address health insurance costs but his administration does not appear to be engaged in a solution. Trump is making efforts to solve illegal immigration and being stonewalled at every turn obviously. At the very least he is exposing that our laws and courts somehow don't allow us to simply turn away people who enter or stay improperly. As for the dead reporter he doesn't matter more to me because of his profession. In my view he matters less than the part time waitress/waiter that serves lunch. The journalist profession is heavily soiled IMO due to so many bad actors within it. It is a ***** industry. If this is true then it easily explains why Trump hasn't had a strong public response.

To which I say: What does any of this have to do with $22T in debt and climbing, giant annual increases in health insurance costs and out of control illegal immigration? We all really need to focus on the big stuff and ask our government to simply focus on getting a few big things right. Khashoggi matters less to me than the next person in Chicago that nobody knows that gets killed. In terms of foreign policy, Trump is doing pretty well overall. He's taking on the larger tougher stuff.

How exactly are people being denied the right to vote? Not normalized. It was a murder in another part of the world. How many of those happen every day? The reality is that in every part of the world if you piss off the wrong person you might end up dead. Not legal, but it happens a lot. He must have really pissed somebody off and maybe didn't consider the risks. In this case it's more evidence that parts of the islamic world are 500 years behind the times.

This "situation" is one of the most ridiculous political clusters of my lifetime. Utterly ridiculous.
