It's Time to Mandate Vaccines
leh-nerd skin-erd replied to The Frankish Reich's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
When I saw that bill referenced on a website, I went to the senate website to read the bill. I then posted a link in one of these threads. The generally amiable @Doc Brown suggested I research the history of the bill, including that it never made it out of committee. I responded, as I generally try to do, and remain uncertain as to why it's incumbent on me to consider and disregard the language contained in that bill. I've revisited it a few times, and still walk away thinking how ominous the language actually is. If it were to become law, it would make a great premise for a futuristic sci-fi flick. It was humorous on some level as well, give than while the appropriately empowered individuals might hustle you off to a detention center, and might be able to let your family or friends know (if feasible) and maybe provide access to representation (again, if feasible), there were limitations. Turns out while you could be held for 60 days, then reupped again for another slug perpetually, nothing was going to happen on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday--days of rest for those running the game. -

Biden chose his path independent of what everyone else did. Are you suggesting that failure was the only possible outcome? -

Hogwash. You don't explain away a lack of transparency because someone won't like what they see. That's the point about transparency. Biden has been a member of the power elite for nearly 5 decades, has connections most insiders could only hope to build and still, and still %$#@ed everything up. It's what he does, and surely if you voted for him you knew that. He failed on logistics on the distribution of the vax; He failed on offering a clear outline on the need to vaccinate; He participated in trashing the vax when it made sense for him politically; He vowed to end COVID, he supersized transmission and death count; He acknowledged being caught with his pants down on variants, as did Harris. I believe him. Your argument that no other country is handling it better reminds me of the old adage "Just because someone has to eat a bigger sh*t sandwich doesn't make mine taste any better". -
A guy from humble beginnings who rose to power and paved his pockets with gold along the way: From time to time during his Senate career, news reports suggested that Mr. Reid’s public role and private interests overlapped. In 2003, for example, the Los Angeles Times disclosed that the senator had pushed legislation benefiting Nevada entities that paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in lobbying fees to his sons’ and son-in-law’s firms. He denied any impropriety, and the episode quickly faded away, his leadership position undamaged. (Mr. Reid said he was helping his home state, not his family, though he subsequently barred relatives from lobbying his office.)

It sure sounds as if Biden, Harris and Fauci were caught by surprise by them. -
Cawthorn in a Cross Fit Competition?

Are you saying you would vote for him? https://nypost.com/2021/02/04/joe-biden-revives-controversial-claim-he-was-shot-at/ https://www.cnsnews.com/blog/michael-w-chapman/flashback-biden-admits-plagiarizing-law-school-academic-claims-inaccurate https://www.cnsnews.com/blog/michael-w-chapman/flashback-biden-admits-plagiarizing-law-school-academic-claims-inaccurate -
Biden had no idea what the reference was and it was obvious to anyone watching that clip. Shortly after the Brandon drop you could see him glitch a bit as he tried to stitch together a question about where the Brandon dropper was from. He struggle with some really tough words there, one being “where” and the other “Oregon”. On the other hand you should be thrilled if you’re glad the president “isn’t focusing or thinking…”. He’s delivering there in a big way. As for dropping “Let’s go Brandon” on Biden and the good Doctor, the world can be a tough place to navigate. It probably shouldn’t have surprised him that some crazies would phone in death threats and that wouldn’t be the story. I read somewhere that he’s a former law enforcement officer and presumably armed, so that’s a plus if things get ugly.

You had me at “Midnight…”. Saw the Allman Bros a few times at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center—-cool venue not that far from @mead107 I’ll bet. Vince Gill takes me back to Pure Praire League and “Amy” every Friday and Sat night at Cassidy’s in Buffalo. ZBB is top 5 for my all time favorite concerts. Great energy, great sound and an awesome family time. Also saw them at SPAC.

Distrust of institutions is as natural (and understandable) as the rain. The last several years of slash and burn politics has done nothing to improve that, and the inability of Fauci to stay on point and the involvement of our government in Wuhan supersized it. -
I like your attempt at an explanation, most importantly the implementation of a rule designed for the greater good. While imperfect (and often times, simply tolerated) the intent seems honorable. It’s their game. Interestingly, the NFL from a player perspective takes an entirely different tact when it comes to equity. That definition seems to be “survival of the fittest” or “best man for the job” regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation etc. Feelings, it would seem, need not apply. From the player’s perspective, of course, equity and fairness isn’t really a thing either. There are players commanding massive paydays at the expense of others sharing from the same pool of money, and those earning a mere pittance relative to the pool of money available. Still, you occasionally hear of a player taking less money than they might otherwise command to improve the team’s position and by extension, spread the money around a bit. I think the entire scheme provides a glimpse into the complexities associated with such lofty aspirations as “equity” and “fairness”. I agree we’re getting…better…in some ways, and as a society getting dumber by the minute in others.

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

Biden may be sliding mentally, but he knows his base will look confused for a minute remembering his promise to “Stop the virus”, look left, then right, and simply change direction with him like they thought of this. -
This is the sort of play you see when they describe the old school NFL game where players "got their bell rung". I have no idea about the Mooks, but if they are as bad a$$ed as the Moops, watch out.

My brother is a very likable guy, good with people generally and doesn’t look for trouble. Still, there was a time when he would drop the gloves and could handle himself quite well. One night at a local gin mill, another fella was harassing a friend of his in hopes of stepping outside. My brother volunteered to take his friends place, and as the assailant considered the offer, a third guy whispered to him “That’s Bob McAdoo*…you don’t want to mess with him” (*Bob McAdoo is a pseudonym, not sure where I came up with it). Anyway, he was at a Wegmans chatting with a teller, asking for feedback and wishing her holiday cheer as the men in our family tend to do. As he chatted, a douche wandered by and told him to “Put his $&)&ing mask over his nose.”. My brother suggested he mind his business, the douche suggested it was his business and lobbed an obligatory “Go vote for Trump” his way. My brother’s thought was it was fortuitous he didn’t see the guy outside on his way out. My brother is in his mid 50s. Civility seems to be on hold at times, and while it certainly pays both ways, you have to had a pretty sad life on your hands when your main objective in life is to engage with. Mask wearing human who’s nose peaked out from the mask while engaged in conversation. Ar the same time, it’s fair to say when you want to push someone, sometimes you might be surprised as how they push back.

When you reduce your options in life to one of two choices, you reveal a limitation in critical thinking. When you take the time to type it and share your thoughts with others, you reveal to the world that you are a simpleton. Since you asked, I'll reply as I did when you incorrectly assumed I had not been vaccinated--politely and to educate you, the uneducated. I require neither tissue nor medal. I'd prefer acknowledgement and your recognition that you jumped to an unwarranted conclusion, but I'll take one of the three Trump memes you keep for just this type of embarrassing scenario in the alternative. Blind faith in any one person is generally recipe for disaster, but who are we kidding here? It's extremely unlikely you listen to your doctor's advice on everything, though accepting the jab seems one you would pre-inclined to listen to. My doctor suggested getting the vaccine as well, though his manner and temperament had much less anxiety and hostility than that of the average dem pretending that only people that supported Trump are vax-hesitant. That's probably because he's a man of intellect and deep reflection, v your average knuckledragger of any political persuasion. On the flu vaccine btw, it's interesting you bring that up. The CDC indicated that only about half of the American public avails themselves of the flu vaccine annually, a relatively small number when you consider the annual cost of treatment of the flu, and the death count associated with the flu and flu-related deaths each year. When you remove children from the equation, we find less than half of the adults in the country receive the flu shot. When you stop to consider the one government agency has a benchmark of 70%, it seems pretty clear that all this talk about us'n'them getting together and serving the common good isn't all that realistic, and we've collectively done a better than average job of working together here. In your average flu season, people don't really seem to care all that much over those we lose. Now before you get all antsy and I have to take you to the woodshed again, I get my flu vaccine every year. I do it because I believe it lessens the likelihood of a serious illness--which I prefer not to experience again, and to contribute to the greater good. I work in a public setting and frequently encounter older Americans, and I feel no less committed to the cause during cold and flu season than I do now. https://usafacts.org/articles/how-many-americans-get-flu-shots-vaccine-cdc/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=ND-Healthcare&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxdbF2rKE9QIVxP_jBx3MDgRoEAAYASAAEgJdGfD_BwE Oh, and for my contribution to your health, you are welcome. That's absurd. Michael Jordan couldn't jump over Niagara Falls in his heyday, and he was a good jumper.

This is a different point than you made previously, where you were crowing about the fiercely independent dem mindset where you didn’t need leaders to tell you what to think. The irony of that statement is priceless as you hunker the f down with lights off while muttering “I make my own choices once Biden tells me what to do!”. Now that you tapped out on that issue, I’ve done what I can. I followed protocols including: following all guidance issued since March of 2020, including wearing a mask made of Puffs and rubber bands in stores located in counties uninterested in following the Hochul maybe mandate based on the Biden sorta mandate; I closed my office in 2020, established work from home procedures and kept my employees employed while work was scarce; I’ve done my level best to accommodate employees still concerned about COVID through a mostly unsatisfying work-from-home arrangement; When I travelled to Florida in February, I followed NYS protocol involving testing, quarantine upon return in spite of the fact that the protocol made no sense whatsoever. It was weighted to punish/impact NYS residents while applying no testing/protocol whatsoever for folks who lived out of state who worked in NYS; I drove 80 miles to get vaccinated in April, made the same trip a few weeks later for the second jab; I’ll be boosted as I see fit; Open your eyes, close your mouth and you’ll learn a few things.

Sadly, under your watch, the wind has blown in the direction of increased transmission, an increasing death count and cynicism courted by dem leaders as previously noted. I think President Biden called for a winter of death on his watch. Maybe you people should think like the guy who delivered the vax and didn’t $&@& up the distribution.
-
On the one hand you got the guy who spearheaded the development of the vaccine. On the other hand you have the people saying “I wouldn’t trust the vaccine if Trump’s in office”. On another hand you have folks who argue that American’s have a right to question. On yet another hand you have those same folks suggesting you really shouldn’t question anything their people said, even though they said what they said on the first hand. At times it feels like one big *****, figuring all this out.

It appeared as if Biden really struggled to concentrate on the follow up question “Are you from Oregon?”. I’m wondering if something about the “Brandon” reference triggered something in his memory and while he couldn’t recall exactly why it bothered him, that part was at war with the ole affable Joe part of his brain.
-
Of course Americans had/have the right to question these things. That was part of the original point—and thank you for acknowledging it. You can pretend that the Dems advising those same Americans to be skeptical of the vaccine, and fighting the dissemination of information as part of the dem platform in 2020 had nothing to do with the skepticism, but that seems a fools errand to me just based on the numbers we all can see. I guess I wonder why in your mind American’s lost the right to question when your new admin took over? It’s pretty obvious based on vax numbers that millions of Americans of all political stripes still do, yet suddenly the Biden messaging is to sit down, shut up and submit. You probably missed this up thread: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-12-18/vaccine-data-gaps-point-to-millions-more-in-u-s-who-lack-shots The B/H ticket is really struggling here as people reject their mitigation recommendations.

Thank you, and I hope you and your family did as well. Color me skeptical, though I suppose one man’s view of politicking is another’s conspiracy theory. Interestingly enough, Trump’s messaging (as you see it, anyways) would go on the list of reasons people across the land might be vaxx hesitant or distrustful of the government/people in leadership. We’ve come this far and it’s almost a Christmas miracle. What did you mean when you said protests were not superspreaders “…in and of themselves.”.
