Bill O’Brien - thoughts about him as OC?
SectionC3 replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
This is where I’m at, too. I’m definitely done with Dorsey. I could probably live with Frazier for another year. But if somebody said that we would change it up a bit and take a whack at Vic Fangio, I wouldn’t be totally against it. Not sure how our personnel fits with Fangio’s style. But, then again, we’re going to have some turnover on that side of the ball. So maybe now’s the time to switch it up. -

He hired Frazier right off the hop. -
Agreed again. It’s gonna have to get uncomfortable for us to get over the hump.

I thought a lot about the criminal issue today. I think we’re going to see some scumbags in here soon because it’s a unique blend of talent and economy, both of which we need.

I don’t disagree with wanting teammates who can dig a little deeper. But we’re all human, including them, Here’s the other layer, at least in my view. Everything we did offensively during the second half of the season was a downright struggle. Our offense hinges on Josh Allen doing something ranging from extraordinary to miraculous. Without that extra little bit of pop or energy or whatever you want to call it, the miracle didn’t come. And here we are today. So I guess I’m hinting at a coaching issue as well. I’m done with Dorsey. And, if they move on from Frazier, I could live with it. Time to double down on the offensive side of the ball and take our chances elsewhere. -

Unless, of course, you’re the emotional crutch of the community like these guys are following Tops and crippling, deadly, back-to-back snowstorms. Then deal with the Hamlin situation. Enough was enough for them. They’re tired, and it shows. -

Totally agree. Look, we were flat yesterday, and that frankly is understandable. We have some tweaks that we need to make. But anyone who’s been paying attention could see a game like this one coming from a mile away. You might know more about this than me, but I heard there was a coach (unnamed, to me) who collapsed in the building during the second NE as a result of the unique stress and difficulty of this season. It’s been a lot. Now it’s time to rest, get right, get the team right, and grind away again next year. -

They’re human. It was obvious in the stadium yesterday. In fact, it was obvious the last three weeks in the stadium. I live in Orchard Park. I’m gassed from dealing with the two snowstorms. I don’t have to play professional football. And I didn’t have a close friend/teammate nearly die on the field in front of me. And I’m also not part of the the emotional crutch (the Bills) for this community, which has been through its own iterations of hell and back since last May. And I also haven’t been part of a nutty season that has involved a disgusting rape allegation, the Tre White drama, ridiculous weather and travel, the Von Miller injury, and the near-tragedy in Cincinnati. These guys gave everything they had since May. No doubt about that. On the scoreboard, it wasn’t enough. There are changes that have to be made (looking at you, Ken Dorsey, the WR room save for Diggs, and 60% of the offensive line). But the reality is that the energy of this year evaporated with the Hamlin injury. Nothing more, nothing less. Let’s improve in the offseason, fix the offense, and keep on pounding away next year. -

Invisible. It’s hard to say a 6.5 sack season or whatever was is invisible. But this year it was. -
Time to go all in on the OL - The grades

I made a similar suggestion, though not as neatly put as you did, in a different thread. Double down on helping Josh in the draft, and let the chips fall where they may on the other side of the ball. Maybe you have another point, too: paying STers decent money may now be a thing of the past. Guys like Matakevich might not be around too much longer. The punter probably will be a minimum wage player next year. Beyond that, time for the kids to step up. -

It’s because Doyle was hurt and OJ Howard was a wasted signing. And also because Tommy Sweeney can’t cut it, Quinton Morris isn’t best suited for that type of role, and they decided to bury Reggie Gilliam this year. So, yeah, that whole “go big” thing took an eligible receiver effectively out of play and still didn’t really serve to provide good protection. -
They still bill pretty well. It was the age of consolidation and the desire to cut programming costs that did the industry in.
-
They don’t have a choice. The Bills are their bread and butter. And they pay 4m+ per year for rights, so they have to stick to the script. The ironic thing, given the huge rights fee, is that they get nothing from the bills in terms of scoops or inside info. They did better when they were the voice of the fan and they had insiders on the payroll.

Orlovsky: Bills aren't as talented offensively as we thought

They play different sides. -
Any suggestions on the solution? Part of me wonders whether McKenzie and what I understand to be his incessant mouth is done here. Part of me also wonders whether it’s time for a tweak in defensive philosophy. My two cents is that the draft should focus on protecting Josh and acquiring additional skill and speed for that side of the ball. We should double down on our best asset. On the defensive side of the ball, I’m not sure what can be done. We have a bunch of guys aging poorly and/or leaving (White, Poyer, Jordan Phillips, maybe Edmunds, too) and who haven’t met expectations (Epenesa, Basham, Bernard). It makes me wonder whether fresh ideas (coaching) on the defensive side of the ball is due.

I heard about the offense/defense rift, especially after 13 seconds and the bananas flight home. Not sure if you’re suggesting there’s a rift b/w McD and Dorsey. I heard rumblings that Daboll was unhappy last year, and he frankly seemed a little miserable to me from a distance, but I never bought the idea that he and McD would have parted ways even if the Giants job didn’t work out. But maybe there was fire to the smoke and McD is going through it again with Dorsey. I don’t know. Maybe there’s nothing there and I’m just reading into too many things.
-
I completely agree about conditions. I knew we were trouble on the first play from scrimmage. Edmunds had responsibility for the receive (Chase, IIRC) in zone, and Burrow went right at him. The pickins’ only got easier thereafter. We tried to move out safeties around a little bit post-snap, but it just wasn’t there.
-
I’ll add Spencer Brown to the list of those complicit, but otherwise I agree with you.
-
If you’re talking about the deep shot on the first series that wasn’t much of a miss. It was a bad weather throw that had to be made on a line way, way downfield lest the safety either intercept the ball or destroy Diggs. If that miss is the complaint I don’t know what to say. It was right in front of me, and I thought it *might* have been a TD if Allen is on the money because I thought Diggs *might* have slipped past the safety based on the angle. But that was a really, really difficult throw. I wonder if Diggs is one of the guys who thinks the coaching staff doesn’t have it. (This was mentioned by a longtime poster on another thread.) Many signs seem to point in that direction.
-
McKenzie is not it. Hence Allen pushing for Beasley mid-year. The slot guy next year is a share between Diggs and Shakir. Boom. Done. Be creative. Move people around. The big need this offseason is a boundary WR who can make a contested catch now and again, unlike one of the current occupants of said position.
-
I agree with this to a point. I think we’re stale. Time for a new mind on the offensive side of the ball to challenge everyone. Make things a little uncomfortable. I don’t have a huge issue with the D schematically save for the bland nonsense we played yesterday. But maybe that was due to the fact that one starting corner runs about a 4.9 40, we’re playing a third-string safety, the other safety has a list of injuries took long to print, and our front four—which I note included many snaps from a PS 1-tech—couldn’t get a sniff of Burrow. So, bottom line, the vote here is new coaching and overhaul of the receiver room on the offensive side of the ball, make some tough decisions on personnel on the D side of the ball (adios and many thanks to Poyer, Tre either gets it together or we roll with Elam/Benford next year, whatever happens with Edmunds in FA happens), and we take it from there. They shouldn’t hold their breaths. Unless the Texans circle back I don’t see it happening.

The source is a guy who is at OBD basically every day. They hear things.

They know little to nothing. The team historically ices the radio station. I don’t know about you, but what I hear is the rumbling/grumbling that Dorsey is in over his head.

Post-game thoughts after a disappointing loss
SectionC3 replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall
I’m more worried about getting the OC a new job. There’s a temptation to say that we screwed up letting Daboll leave after 13 seconds. But this year was one thing after another with Tops, Araiza, snowstorm #1, the Tre white drama, the Miller injury, snowstorm #2, the frigidity in Chicago, and the the Hamlin crisis. I think they were gassed, and McD deserves credit for getting them this far in view of all of the adversity. That said, I’m done with Dorsey. I heard during the year that certain people in the building thought he was in over his head. It sort of makes sense now. Everything seemed forced in the second of the year. We cannot waste another year of Josh/Diggs with this BS.
