Chargers fire OC Ken Whisenhunt
dave mcbride replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
https://www.si.com/nfl/chargers/news/chargers-ken-whisenhunt-firing-steve-steichen-interim/ Is he a bad head coach? He was 21-11 going into this season, and he took over a team with a bad record (5-11). -
Chargers fire OC Ken Whisenhunt
dave mcbride replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why would you say that? The Bills offense produced in 2016 when he was the OC, and prior to this season he was 21-11 at SD (and he took over a 5-11 team). My own suspicion is that the ending of the Titans game might have brought things to a head. That was some terrible playcalling at the goal line by SD. Not sure who was responsible. EDIT: "Whisenhunt’s playcalling, particularly his insistence to get Gordon involved when he was clearly ineffective, led to the frustration of fans and the team. Philip Rivers was shown arguing with the coaching staff early on in the game on Sunday." https://boltbeat.com/2019/10/28/chargers-fired-offensive-coordinator-ken-whisenhunt/ Looks like stupidly slamming Gordon in twice with no timeouts (he fumbled both times too) was Whisenhunt's call, and it also looks like Rivers was unhappy with him. -
I think Daboll has made some questionable calls, but I also think he's the most creative OC the Bills have had since Gailey was calling plays (and Marchibroda before that). This is a fan base that ran Dan Henning out of town after one season (Marv allegedly quit because he didn't want to follow Ralph's advice and fire him). Henning had been saddled with an awful QB (Todd Collins), yet people blamed him. He was immediately hired by Parcells afterward as QB coach, and Testaverde that season had the best season of his career. The Jets that season went 12-4 and went to AFC championship game. He then became the OC for a Carolina team that got to the SB with Jake Delhomme and lost on the last play of the game in a shootout. The point is, more often than not it's about the Jimmys and the Joes, not the Xs and the Os. OCs and DCs are easy targets.

Drew Bledsoe debate topic
dave mcbride replied to Royale with Cheese's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bledsoe's lifetime record and numbers vs. teams with a winning record was truly abysmal. Unfortunately, I can't find that information on the internet anymore, so I'd have to reconstruct it from PFR. Too much work, but trust me, it's true. -
As I said in another note, the Bills’ 3 rbs are averaging 5.1 ypc on 120 carries. Allen is averaging 4.4. 5.1 is extremely high. The Bills clearly have a competent running game through their rbs. Also, if you’re going to make that sort of argument, you have to take out all qb runs. There are more than you might think for teams like the pats because of kneel downs.

How we get to 10 wins and playoffs...

The ravens’ game will be at home and quite possibly in terrible weather (December 8). I wouldn’t write that one off. Baltimore is good, but hardly great. -
Glazer: Bills are still in market for a WR
dave mcbride replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've been thinking the same, but they could always franchise him. They'll have the space, and he's definitely a top ten receiver when healthy. -
Gore, Singletary, and Yeldon are collectively averaging 5.1 ypc (on 125 carries). It's not like they're incapable of running the ball effectively through their backs. He said that they have no play action game because their running game isn't good enough to set it up. Allen's 4.4 ypc is tied with Gore and below the other two.

This is just not right. The Bills are 13th in rushing attempts, 8th in rushing yards, and 5th in rushing yards per attempt. Check out the running games of some other teams in the league. The Bills are a decent-to-solid rushing team.

Trade Deadline Woes for da Bills
dave mcbride replied to IgotBILLStopay's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Speaking of pass rushing DEs, does the 2019 stat line here give you pause? It does for me: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/H/HughJe99.htm -
fun fact: https://www.google.com/search?q=2017+fau+schedule+football&rlz=1C1GGRV_enGB751GB751&oq=2017+fau+schedule+football&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l3.5768j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#sie=m;/g/11dxb8lsqd;6;/m/012hfxch;dt;fp;1;; FAU did play Wisconsin that year; they lost 31-14 and he had 17 carries for 68 yards and a TD.

What I have been focusing on are the throws to receivers getting behind the defense and on the way to the house. He has missed all of those this season. The throw to Brown in game one was a back shoulder throw, and I'm not sure if it was intentional or not. Regardless, Brown hadn't gotten behind behind the defense. Nice play regardless, of course.

Trade Deadline Woes for da Bills
dave mcbride replied to IgotBILLStopay's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Dunno specifically, but after his one good season (2016), he's been below average and only a part-time starter in 2017 and 2018. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BeasVi00.htm. My guess is that he's regarded as just a generic player. -
Trade Deadline Woes for da Bills

I have a sinking feeling that Beane isn't going to be willing to part with the draft picks necessary to obtain an offensive difference maker that can help them win a playoff game this season. I hope I'm wrong because they really need an upgrade, but there's only one more day left before the deadline. -
Is Star Lotulelei A Liability on the DL?
dave mcbride replied to Phil The Thrill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
$8 million cap hit if he's cut before next season, but that's less than $10 million cap hit he'd be if he's on the team. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/buffalo-bills/star-lotulelei-12294/ I think that this might be the last year of Star. -
He was running a go route and expected to take it to the house given how open he was. Also, given that the wind was at his back and Allen almost always badly overthrows his deep balls, why would he expect it to land short? I don't blame him for the play.

Josh Allen - week EIGHT report card
dave mcbride replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That was way, way short. He was so off -- again -- that frankly I'm tired of the excuses for his staggeringly poor performance in that part of his game. If the Bills are going to be a dangerous offensive team, defenses can't go in knowing they can let receivers get deep because the opposing QB can't hit any of the throws. I think you're starting to see this, actually - on just about all of the deep shots lately, guys have been very open. I mean, why take the threat seriously given the lack of accuracy? -
Josh Allen - week EIGHT report card
dave mcbride replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He threw that with the wind at his back. Wentz hit his deeper throws when he had the wind. yes, it was late and forced him to slow down, allowing Darby to recover. -
?? - there were two defenders between him and the ball, which was far behind him.

Josh Allen - week EIGHT report card
dave mcbride replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He also badly missed a wide open Foster on a deep ball that would have put them up 14-3 in the second. I know you're not asking me, but I thought was a "A" yesterday. He played extremely well. -
Correct. Daboll is not the problem here. If Allen were ever able to hit the occasional deep throw (Foster was wide open yesterday), the conversation surrounding the production from Daboll's offense would be a lot different.

Bills 13, Eagles 31 postgame thread
dave mcbride replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agree almost entirely, but the late-game QB play plus the lack of a real pass rush from the RDE position vs. a quality opponent left me concerned. At home, the Bills squeaked by Cincy and Miami, but lost to the Pats and werr blown out by Philly. I hate to say it, but shades of 2008 and 2011 are at the front of my mind.
