  1. Fairport Convention - House Full: Live at the L.A. Troubadour - I love the long versions of "Sloth" and "Matty Groves"
  2. As I work for a major state university in Texas, talk at work is pretty much exclusively about college athletics. Outside of work, sometimes I wear my "Josh Allen draws the Buffalo Bills logo" T-shirt. Some people recognize the logo and I tell them the story behind it. In general, it is very well-received.
  3. The material for this album was actually taken from 4 shows. For the hardcore fan, in 2014 they released a 6 CD set with the individual shows ("The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings").
  4. Grateful Dead - Live/Dead Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 2 "The Helsinki Concert" Traffic - Live On The Road Little Feat - Waiting For Columbus The Band - Rock Of Ages
  5. After getting my PhD in Biochemistry in Germany, I came to University of Rochester as a postdoc. My mentor there referred to me as Dr W (W being the first letter in my last name).
  6. Your sarcasm sensor needs some adjustment. This was the intention of the piece. It was published on a Packers fan site.
  7. Not a song, but a 15 year old commercial...
  8. Punk before punk was invented: The Fugs In case you can't understand English, there are captions in Swedish. And here is their most anarchist song (written in 1965): Nothing
  9. The best song from the best Genesis album, "Selling England by the Pound": Firth of Fifth
  10. A few months ago, a board member (Ralonzo; sorry, i do not know how alert him to this post) pointed me to The Walkabouts. Here is one of their live concerts - thanks to German public TV. A cello in a rock band is very rare.
  11. Next Thursday you will be treated to Washington versus Chicago.
  12. Jefferson Airplane spawned two musically different groups, Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna. Here are two concert clips from the better one of the two (by far). However, I will admit that Jorma's vocals are not in the same class as Grace's. Acoustic Electric
  13. Department store clerk Between high school and army I had 6 weeks time. 4 of these weeks I worked in the largest department store in Hanover (Germany) as "Verkaeuferin" which is the word for female sales clerk (I am male; this was in the mid-1970s where they still were allowed to pay women less than men). I was put into the photography department. As I did not have any sales experience, they did not let me sell cameras, but I was part of the team responsible for making photocopies and selling the low-end stuff. Among other things, we were selling picture frames. I vividly remember how sometimes people came with very wrinkled photographs and were disappointed that the wrinkles did not disappear just by putting the pic in a frame. Another item we sold were sunglasses which were a favorite target for thieves. The best time for sunglass theft (seen from the point of view of the thief) was the last half hour before closing time. Most sales staff would tend to look away when they spotted a thief during that time, to avoid the lengthy procedure to formally deal with the theft; they just wanted to get home.
  14. Monk - "It's a jungle out there" by Randy Newman Four CSI franchises use "Who" songs as theme. My favorite - CSI Miami - Won't get fooled again
  15. Early in her career. critics complained how Gillian Welch as a Southern California girl could produce authentic Appalachian country music. But here you can judge yourself. David Rawlings' acoustic guitar is outstanding.
  16. Another emphatic "yes" to Zappa's question "Does humor belong in music?". In 1981, an album called "Nick Mason's Fictitious Sports" was released. While Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was a co-producer and actually played the drums, all music and lyrics were provided by Carla Bley, who is better known as a {free} jazz artist. Most vocals were by Robert Wyatt (ex-Soft Machine). In this song, they poke fun of musical "minimalists" (Satie, Cage, Glass) by addressing them "mineralists". My personal favorite: a spoof on alien encounters...

Most late-night televangelists have two things in common: 1. They are avid customers of "just for men" or related hair-dyeing products. 2. They like to be addressed as "Dr."; in most cases their doctorate is in divinity, which is more of an honorary title. Most of them promise you rewards in health matters or in material form if you donate money to their church. Even if you believe the premise that God will look favorably on those supporting his cause financially, a question these televangelists should be asked is if the believer would gain the same benefits by donating the money to their local church or charity.
  18. The Talking Heads live on German TV a few years before "Stop Making Sense", with Adrian Belew on guitar. Belew's contributions (it was after his stint with Zappa and before joining King Crimson) give this concert a special place in the Talking Head's catalogue. My only question: Adrian, who made you wear these pants?
  19. One of my favorite "bands that nobody else knows", the "Scaramanga Six". First, a live/studio performance several years ago. Please be patient as the fun part starts at about 2 minutes. Their newest work shows a return to their punk/rock origins...
  20. Now I know why they looked so elegant... Definition of minuet 1 : a slow graceful dance in ³/₄ time characterized by forward balancing, bowing, and toe pointing.
  21. Margaret Court in January 2020: "But I always thought Steffi was the best. She was my favourite. She won the Grand Slam in 1988 (Australian, French, Wimbledon and US Open) and I always loved watching her because of her athleticism and style. She was one of the best athletes I had seen." Court rated Serena Williams ... at No. 2, followed by Billie Jean King at No. 3, Martina Navratilova at No. 4, Chris Evert at No. 5, Monica Seles at No. 6, Evonne Goolagong Cawley at No. 7, Maria Bueno at No. 8, Justine Henin at No. 9 and Venus Williams at No. 10. https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Tennis_Stories/83277/margaret-court-i-always-thought-steffi-graf-was-the-best-she-was-my-favourite/
  22. When I was about seven, my mom decided that summer vacations on the beach of the Baltic or North Sea were too boring; instead, we were going to the Alps for 3-4 weeks. Every other day or so we would go hiking. On the days in-between, the main attraction was the local public swimming pool in Serfaus/Austria. That was in the 1960s, and the pool was fed by mountain creeks and not heated except by the sun during the day. Often, until late afternoon my sister and I were the only ones daring to go into the pool. Our main game (and the reason I am telling the story in this context) was to save insects from drowning. We would carefully carry them to the pool side and let them dry in the sun. We would rescue them regardless of species. There were many grasshoppers, but also bumble-bees and wasps.
  23. In 2009, Mikhail Gorbachev released an album of love songs on occasion of the 10th anniversary of his wife, Raissa, due to leukemia.
