Actually being in a car is great protection from lightning because the metal around you redirects the lightning into the ground -
I'd suggest that recent concussion research has started to make this no longer a kids game and that tonight's nightmare is going to move it even further.

Where else would they be? The plane isn't scheduled to leave for hours, they have no hotel rooms, they can't go the hospital and create chaos...
