So Brian Flores has blown the cover off of the Rooney Rule. He says that the Rooney Rule just forces teams to conduct sham interviews with the obligatory black guy before hiring whoever they want. (Leslie Frazier and Anthony Lynn have endured this over the years.) I've been called a few bad names by people because I've been saying on these boards for some time that the Rooney Rule encourages tokenism and hurts the people it was intended to help. Apparently Brian (the Miami Brian, not the Buffalo Brian) agrees with me.

I just visited Cincinnati (on my summer baseball road trip) - first visit since graduating UC way too many years ago. It's still nice (though not as nice as it once was) and I made sure to visit the Graeters Ice Cream store in Fountain Square at least once per day. Findlay Market and Over the Rhine are totally gentrified, much like my urban planning professors were advocating back in the '70s.

Didn't we play his team this year? Didn't he review some film for that game? Maybe he was too burned out to do his homework which is why we scorched his butt.

What Payton should know since he had to watch Bills film this year is that the Bills kicked short of the goal line frequently and with considerable success all season. It's not a seldom-used technique for Buffalo. There was a thread here back in mid-season that discussed the fact that Bass was using a 3 step approach on some of his kickoffs, and the result was drive starts inside the 25. Payton's just wrong on this one.

All I could think about watching that second half was WHY OH WHY COULDN'T WE HAVE HAD JUST ONE OF THOSE MAHOMES MISTAKES LAST WEEK!!??

Seeing the Titans and the Packers swan dive their way out of the playoffs, it makes you wonder how much the first round bye ("more valuable this year than ever!") is a mixed blessing. Assuming you get through a first round playoff game without serious injuries, I think there's a lot of benefit to having played the previous week rather than having two weeks off (maybe more if your final week game was meaningless) and losing your edge. I wonder what the W-L record is for teams coming off the bye over the years.
