That and the reviews on his training camp performance have been not glowing and then he suffers the injury that limits his development. This is my opinion based on the information available. -

It’s just when I hear a guy is not great at the point of attack against the run and is suspect at tackling, like all the scouting reports say, along with being injured, it smells like a 1st round reach. -

Did I think Bernard would be far better than Edmunds, no. Hats off to those that saw that coming. Hairston is a different story. As a 1st rounder,, someone who is recognized by many scouting operations as being soft against the run and a problematic tackler while having injuries, is a reach. Plain and simple. Usually you can’t teach toughness. -

Flattery will get you everywhere with me. Actually the stain is more the wasted cap space on the PED D-lineman, the 1st round flop Elam, not generating a viable pass rush in 3 years while giving Miller a ridiculous contract and then reaching in the 1st round for a slight, poor tackling, injury prone Hairston. I hope I’m wrong, because we need him to be a corner that covers the other team’s best. I’m not optimistic. Hairston, but I’d like Bishop to show something already. -

I’m all for some comic relief on this board with the heightened sensitivity shown when someone offers up some objectivity on the negative side of a draft choice or FA acquisition. Since your cynical approach to accepting what is the collective opinion of scouts that do this stuff for a living, is belittling the messenger, what are you willing to do if Hairston is a liability? With your history of taking yourself really seriously, I’m sure you’ll just go into denial mode. -

You like Hairston even though he comes with the shortcomings I detailed from the professional scouting operations, God bless you. If you haven’t paying attention, Beane’s history of drafting and FA acquisitions in the secondary has been spotty to bad as exemplified by what we have back there now. -

Hancock is already better than Bishop. Bishop is soft and injury prone and he’s often out of position. Hairston and Bishop are a stain on Beane and his scouting department. I’m terribly sorry if that disappoints fans who can’t handle the truth. Explain what you like about Bishop and then think of the criticism leveled against Hairston at training camp and then he gets seriously injured. If he turns out to be a good pro I’ll stop posting. -
I never liked this 1st round pick. The guy is not good in run support and is not a great tackler in college. Can you imagine him tackling pro TEs one on one. He’s slight and injury prone. Other than that he’s terrific.

It’s starting to look like what you’re describing. Shakir got extended, but they paid him like a slot as opposed to an elite wideout. So Josh gets $60 million and any other productive weapon on offense, gets squeezed or traded. Can you believe, with the state of the art showplace stadium on the horizon, they would operate like this?
-
Sean’s ass should be on the hot seat. He’s a big culture guy that isn’t building a culture by lamenting Cook not playing in the preseason game before getting extended. Benford, who’s been extended, criticized Cook as well. He should tell Beane, get my AllPro back signed before the next game or risk losing him for the Ravens opener. With a new stadium coming next season, why would they play hardball with a great back who’s 25 years old. All the other players in their walk year have been resigned. Sean does not have the resume to survive a down year plus he’s a defensive coach with arguably the best QB in football. Not saying a defensive minded coach can’t win a SB, but his defense stunk last year, unable to pressure the QB or stop great running attacks.
-
I don’t understand why Beane is making this thing last longer than it should. We need Cook out there working hard with the offense and building towards the Ravens. Beane did almost nothing to improve the offense. I love Palmer, but he’s not a game changer. With Shakir injured, Beane is prepping us to limp into the regular season. His acquisitions on defense were basically, PED D-lineman, Tre White and an injury prone Bosa. This guy talks a good game but his priorities are misplaced if he doesn’t sign Cook soon. Contrary to what delusional detractors of Cook say about playing hard ball with our 2nd most talented player, we will be asking Josh to play hero ball if Cook remains unsigned and we know how that works out. Either he gets injured or we just struggle with middle of the pack receivers and backup RBs.

Two rapid fire concussions put you in Tua territory. Don’t try and be the arbiter of proper behavior for these athletes in negotiations with billionaire owners. Players do what they have to do and if a GM feels like that have more to lose by not extending, they make a deal. Bills fans should hope it happens sooner than later. Thanks for the conversation, I’ll talk after we sign him.
-
Thank you, I’ve been trying to make this point on Cook’s behalf with no success. If you’re being objective, he’s earned a solid 2nd contract. I’m thinking 42 for 3 with 36 guaranteed.
-
Hopefully you don’t take yourself too seriously because when you hand out these unequivocal determinations of who’s worth more and who’s better than their contract, it sounds like you picture yourself as a financial guy arbitrating a team friendly contract. Try and understand that Benford is a concussion away from missing a season. Was he available when we needed him most? Availability is a huge determinant of a player’s value. RBs have short careers in the NFL. If Cook plays out the final year of his contract and gets a blown ACL in the playoffs after having a great season, his bargaining position is zero and chances are the Bills let him walk. Capologists and payroll specialists like yourself, will say let’s roll with Davis and a 3rd round RB, and you’ll get on this board with your chest pumped up, boasting how you were a visionary for not wanting to sign him early. Cook sees Benford, Bernard , Rousseau get a 2nd contract along with Beane signing to defensive lineman, who will miss 6 games for PEDs. Do you blame him for wanting his money?
-
That’s it, accentuate every negative like blocking or carries and diminish his skills that make the team explosive and hard to defend. The reason I use the sacks stat is because we run the ball 50% and without Cook that not happening. Teams can’t pressure Josh because they have protect against the threat of Cook ripping off a chunk play on 1st or 2nd down. The salary algorithm that Sportstrac uses is based on a flawed RB structure that’s changing all the time. Use the eyeball test without a negative bent you have for whatever reason.

Rams extend RB Kyren Williams - 3-year, $33 million
HamptonBillsfan replied to Big Blitz's topic in The Stadium Wall
If a RB improves every season and more importantly stays healthy, why would you want to dump him to replicate his first season as a pro. His first 3 years compares favorably to McCafrey, Saquon and any other back from the standpoint of health, production and team success. Who’s a bonafide superstar in your estimation? Saquon and Henry qualify but they’re both 6 years older and with a ton of tread on their tires. These guys have a ton of carries which usually translate to injuries in their 30s. Why are you denigrating our best back since Thurman? Josh wants Cook and knows how crucial he is to our SB chances. It’s a trait that makes you more endearing. Thanks for your input. -

You’re embarrassing yourself with these frivolous mutterings. What season stats does Davis have as a featured back. He had one good game. A better receiver and a harder runner? Cook had 16 TDs and 1000yds on 200 carries. Do you just gag up these silly comments for shock value. This is useless. -

Cook is better and has produced in the postseason. Why are you so reluctant to give him a couple million more to make him feel wanted? Penny pinching while we went over the top on the D-line. You guys deserve the mediocrity we’ve dealt with since Thurman. -
Thank you, when they sign him to 13 to 15 for three, just admit you didn’t accept what was right in front of you. Just a partisan efficiency expert.
-
One more thing, the idea of punishing Cook because of pass protection when Josh was sacked 8 times is silly. You keep insisting on the fact you know what Cook is worth. He’s better each year and the Bills went to the AFC championship last season. Josh loves him and he represents a tremendous threat in the running game, giving Josh a great opportunity to dominate in the passing game. .
-
You’re hung up on silly statistical evaluations (Sportrac)that can be manipulated by GMs in negotiations. You’re not being objective when you diminish Cook’s production on just over 200 carries. How could you say he’s not on the field on obvious rushing situations when he had 16 TDs. Why wasn’t he on the field the last 2 series against KC when Brady, Josh and company kept failing to control the game with predictable QB tush pushes. Brady’s lack of creativity and stubborn refusal to use Cook, killed our SB chances. You’re confusing what Brady has designed for our offense with Cook’s shortcomings. He can be a matchup nightmare in the passing game against LBs and safeties, and with 50 more carries 1250. to 1400 yds is more than possible. You forgot to mention in your efforts to discredit Cook , how durable he’s been and how we haven’t had anyone close to his production in the Allen era. More importantly where are we getting his replacement drafting when we do. I’m begging you self styled capologists, just judge Cook by the eye test. How many backs score that TD at the goal line on 4th down to keep us in the game?
-
You’re probably very close to the magic number.. You’re being realistic and any real Bills fan should know the sooner we get this deal done the better our chances for the better part of Josh’s prime.
-
I’m sure you’re a nice fellow but try and understand contracts have meant nothing in professional sports for years. It’s about leverage and a team’s evaluation of whether it’s in their best interests to sign a player to another contract and for how much. It’s a negotiation that starts the year before the rookie contract expires.Remember, a player averages 4 years in the NFL and if he gets injured they will dump him in a finger snap. Stop with the “real men” BS. These guys are just entertainers with a short window to earn and the negotiation starts the year before their rookie contract expires. Did you complain when Benford got extended or Bernard before their contract expired? You can’t compare a contract in business to the NFL. Don’t diminish great players who make our team SB contenders. Remember the mediocrity of bad personnel decisions over 2 decades when you couldn’t watch games after the middle of November.
