Right now he looks like a vertical threat and a guy who can catch contested balls. He’s hungry and provides excellent depth. He’s going to make the roster barring a late acquisition of a veteran who will be a cap hit. I’m rooting hard for him.
-
I would take Gilmore or Douglas over what they have back there, but I’m thinking that by offering a Moore or a Trubiske to a team desperate for those positions, might net us a player.

Beane has to earn his money now acquiring a realistic corner to play opposite Benford for the first four games until Hairston can play and Tre recovers. Dane Jackson, Ingram, are not the answer to any questions and Strong is a raw rookie who is a work in progress. There will be plenty of cuts in the next week and corner and safety is an area of weakness that will be exploited by teams for sure. The guys that have been victimized in the preseason will be on the field unless we can sign and incorporate some better options immediately into our system. Isn’t it sad that we made all these acquisitions for the D-line in the offseason and did nothing to fortify the secondary.

How did the d-line rookies look, or your rotational veteran d-lineman. How about your starting safety(Bishop) or your rotational O-lineman. Presnap penalties, no running game or quality pass protection. I know you’re indifferent to preseason, but God forbid Josh misses a few series or a game, you still laughing at the prospect of the backups holding down the fort? How did Dorian and Buffalo Joe look in the short and intermediate passing game? With Milano’s history and how hard he plays, it’s probable these guys will play a lot. Finally, I don’t care when you take the field, you can’t have receivers consistently in another time zone on obvious passing downs, That shows a lack of concentration and grasp of the scheme. I’m sure you’re confident when a recovering Hairston gets back and Tre White(4 teams in 5 years) plays opposite Benford, we’ll shut these vaunted passing attacks down. Keep laughing,,we spent most of our offseason money and draft capital on defense.

It’s nice that you’re enjoying the undisciplined, disorganized mess that was your team’s performance. You didn’t mention the feedback from observers of the joint practice for the week leading up to the game.It was sloppy, mistake filled Bills play. The Ravens are being dominant with their depth players and we play them in 21/2 weeks. Did you see any positives from players who supposedly are playing for roster spots and playing time? Did you notice a deficiency in fundamentals (tackling, presnap penalties, pass protection, etc)? Was Sean’s reaction to the game and the massive tryouts conducted since give you the impression that our personnel is trending towards playing at a high level. Everyone handles disappointment differently. Some people go into denial mode. I’m not saying that Josh and our starters can’t beat most of the teams on our schedule, but football is a game of attrition and our young players must give us quality depth. A team with legitimate SB aspirations can’t play like we did with little pride or purpose.

Does there need to be a rethinking of the basic D?
HamptonBillsfan replied to oldmanfan's topic in The Stadium Wall
Our defense wants to be aggressive without a legitimate pass rusher. Hopefully Bosa can be that guy but he doesn’t play much if history is any indication. The fact that QBs don’t get much pressure puts stress on our secondary. When healthy, we can survive with the bend don’t break approach but Josh will have to win many shootouts. It promises to be nerve racking. -

I know it was only preseason but Sean is not building the kind of confidence you should have going into a season where rookies and 2nd year players will play an important role. What the hell was that last night? These guys looked confused and disinterested. Why were there so many receivers in another time zone. If you’re going to blitz can you possibly cause a QB hurry or get a hit god forbid. Does our front seven know you’re supposed to tackle RBs? If you’re not going to play starters, can these backups not embarrass the fan base. Aren’t these guys playing for roster spots. I noticed Beane watching from the press box looking stunned. These clueless backups look undisciplined and confused. This is our depth for rotation and replacement responsibilities. Hopefully Sean scares these guys out of their comfort zone because if not we’re going to pay the price and in Sean’s case, he should be gone, -

What’s your point besides rejecting my opinion. Give it up, time to let the player show up or be pedestrian for 4 years. What I think is message board fodder. -

If know you’re trying hard to catch me in a contradictory statement but if you read the post I said you should’ve referenced Elam’s glowing scouting report showing how off these prognosticators can be. -

You going with an aberration that overachieved one scouting report as your assurance that Hairston will be a good 1st round choice. You should have referenced Elam’s glowing scouting reports and him being a total miss, proving these scouting experts know as much as us. -

Well presented, optimistic post. I’m hoping Hairston knows that in our defense he has to stick his nose into the fray in run support without going on the IR. Let him look like Benford and Tre when bringing down a 260 lb TE and start changing my tune. -

Oh so that passive aggressive cynicism is you finding the posts amusing. I’m happy to review Hairston’s performance relative to his draft selection with you and the rest of the board halfway through the season. He’s slight, injury prone and had problems tackling in college. The guys on ESPN and NFL Network didn’t think he was the best cb pick when we drafted. The council in my head feels like our secondary needs a better corner to cover the top receivers with the teams on our schedule. -

When I said some fans can’t handle the truth, I was referring mainly to Bishop. He has been mostly a disappointment and has underperformed his draft selection. Hairston, was not a highly regarded corner by scouting operations and we took in the 1st round. He was not considered a first rounder with his performance in college. -

Your response indicates you’re an individual that can make a solid argument about a topic that only calls for conjecture, so you’re absolutely right calling Hancock a better prospect at this stage is just a feeling.. The reason people make these declarations is they have an OPINION based on the information available and feel justified for the purposes of this potpourri of ideas, throwing it out for public consumption. I don’t agree that the statements you referenced are made as absolutes. It’s just what these social media platforms consist of. If you are offended by anything that comes across as highly charged opinions, you are in the wrong business as a regular contributor on this board. The majority of posters seem to express opinions as fact. -

That and the reviews on his training camp performance have been not glowing and then he suffers the injury that limits his development. This is my opinion based on the information available. -

It’s just when I hear a guy is not great at the point of attack against the run and is suspect at tackling, like all the scouting reports say, along with being injured, it smells like a 1st round reach. -

Did I think Bernard would be far better than Edmunds, no. Hats off to those that saw that coming. Hairston is a different story. As a 1st rounder,, someone who is recognized by many scouting operations as being soft against the run and a problematic tackler while having injuries, is a reach. Plain and simple. Usually you can’t teach toughness. -

Flattery will get you everywhere with me. Actually the stain is more the wasted cap space on the PED D-lineman, the 1st round flop Elam, not generating a viable pass rush in 3 years while giving Miller a ridiculous contract and then reaching in the 1st round for a slight, poor tackling, injury prone Hairston. I hope I’m wrong, because we need him to be a corner that covers the other team’s best. I’m not optimistic. Hairston, but I’d like Bishop to show something already. -

I’m all for some comic relief on this board with the heightened sensitivity shown when someone offers up some objectivity on the negative side of a draft choice or FA acquisition. Since your cynical approach to accepting what is the collective opinion of scouts that do this stuff for a living, is belittling the messenger, what are you willing to do if Hairston is a liability? With your history of taking yourself really seriously, I’m sure you’ll just go into denial mode. -

You like Hairston even though he comes with the shortcomings I detailed from the professional scouting operations, God bless you. If you haven’t paying attention, Beane’s history of drafting and FA acquisitions in the secondary has been spotty to bad as exemplified by what we have back there now. -

Hancock is already better than Bishop. Bishop is soft and injury prone and he’s often out of position. Hairston and Bishop are a stain on Beane and his scouting department. I’m terribly sorry if that disappoints fans who can’t handle the truth. Explain what you like about Bishop and then think of the criticism leveled against Hairston at training camp and then he gets seriously injured. If he turns out to be a good pro I’ll stop posting.
