Pretty good summation from Cover1
Maine-iac replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall
to this end according the splits from ESPN Singletary has 0 carries on thrird down and Moss only has 7. Meanwhile Allen has 21 carries on 3rd down. So our 3rd down back is our QB. -
Someone give Henry 6 carries a game behind our line and see how long he stays in the conversation for pro bowl or MVP. Hell if Robinson plays yesterday he probably joins Damien Harris and Aaron Jones and Herderson Jr as one of four rbs in the top ten ( so not counting Lamar Jackson) in yardage. All 5th round picks or later. James Connor is tied with Henry at 10tds. He was 3rd round pick 105. Most RB's are products of the teams and offenses they play on and are rather interchangeable. There are good ones and not so good ones but largely production will be dictated by game plan over the season and dedication to the run over the season. We simply have no dedication to the run. Not in the front office, not in the game plan, and not in the game time coaching. There is no doubt in my mind our rb's could run the ball on any other team and like I said any back on any list would not be doing much with our current commitment to running the ball. What is truly biting us in the behind is that when you go all in on the pass you better have a line that can at least pass block and with the current injuries that is the question.

Give me one reason why Singletary isn't a decent back. He works like any RB would here. Give him carries and he produces. Give him 6 carries a game and the production is going to be limited. Even with a terrible line the guy pops off good runs often enough that with more than a handful of carries and chances are he'll break you off some good runs. The less we run the ball the worse the offense looks. -

Went to the Falcons who are currently starting a WR at RB. Not even sure where Gurley is now. -

See how open those Tennessee TE's are. Wild guess here but it's probably because teams think they might run the ball. -

Running game...why do we never run outside
Maine-iac replied to Hebert19's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'd like to see Singletary actually get 15 plus carries a game. He has averaged 3.6 ypc on first and then 6.8 ypc on 2nd down. He does not have one single carry on 3rd or 4th down. He has ripped off a 10 plus yard run in in 5 of our 8 games even though he had 7 or less carries in half our games. As far as running to the corners I'd have to say if you have 4 wr's out there all the time you likely have defenders out there with them. If we had 2 wr's and 2 te's we'd probably have more defenders in the middle of the field and some chance of sealing the edge and getting to the outside. With all the safety over the top coverage it also would make it hard to break a longer run outside because the safeties aren't in the box to get sucked up in the blocking. If our line could block in the first place. -

Singletary carried 6 times and 3 out of the 6 carries were for 4 or more yards. That said 6 carries isn't enough for any back. For the season if he gets more than 10 carries he's averaging more than 60 yards. When he gets carries the production is there. -

Defenses are clearly lining up and playing pass. When we come out and run the ball 15 to 20 times in a half and come away with nothing I'll be whole heartedly behind mixing in screens and empty sets and trying other stuff. Defense is getting blown out and we go to throwing every down I'm all for it. Otherwise if we keep coming out and running the ball 3 or 4 times in the first half and the backs only carry it 9 or 10 times all game I will not be surprised to see turnovers and defenses sitting on all our passes. If you make an honest attempt at running the ball there are a lot of options for beating pressure besides going to empty sets and running wr jet sweeps more than actual running plays. People are blaming the backs more and more but I have seen no evidence to support that at all. The less carries they give Singletary the worse the offense looks. Singletary definitely is a back who pops off chunk runs but he's not going to do that when he gets 6 carries a game. -

I get it. It's hard to complete passes but it's not hard to fall forward and make it 2nd and 9 rather than running backwards and your oline gets a hold or you get hit from behind and fumble or you get sacked and it's 2nd and 16. Just hit your drop, pat the ball once maybe twice and then fall forward for a small game or run as far as you can without getting hit. Teams will play lamar jackson honest in pass coverage because he'll run on them any and every down. -

I get it that they aren't successful. What I'm saying is that you still have to do it so that you have better success throwing and possible pop that one run. Especially if the defense is playing well and it's a close game. The manner and infrequency with which we run the ball is only leading to problems throwing the ball later on. -

Which came first the pathetic run game or the complete lack of attempt at having a run game. Seriously though, did our run game just become horrible or have we given little to no attempt at being a good running team? -

Still have to do it. Just to keep the defense honest. Defense is playing well enough that you have to keep running the ball. If you are down two touchdowns I get it. -

Josh holds the ball to long bad things happen. Hit your drop and throw the ball or go fall forward for whatever positive gain you can get without getting hit to bad. Running backwards 10 yards and taking a sack or fumbling or throwing a pick is creeping back in like his rookie year. -

Boomer and Simms who I can't stand are breaking down our offense and even those block heads can tell we need to run the ball. -

I'll blame the o-line but if you don't even attempt running the ball (successfully or not) the o-line will have a harder time because everything gets predictable. -

Possibly biggest down of the game (or one of) and the right tackle didn't even get off the snap. DE just blew by him. -

We have ton of talent and the defense is playing better but if we are going to run a finesse offense that throws the ball 95 percent of the time we will get figured out. Possibly we are already figured out. I still don't have much confidence in the o-lines ability to win in the trenches. -

A few thoughts about the Titans game, in no particular order
Maine-iac replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
Excellent write up but if I could spin my own angle on "the play". Agree or disagree about going for it I can also see why they might try to keep the ball in their hands and decide there own fate right then and there. My issue is why would we relegate that 4th down to a sneak. Why try to sneak 1/2 a yard to get a first. We were only three yards from the end zone. If you are putting all your eggs in one basket why not use the whole field go for a 3 yard TD and let Allen rumble for 1/2 a yard if necessary. Also I've seen plenty of debate on Edwards and I can't speak to how well he plugged the holes and if the runs Henry broke had anything to do with him or not but i will say Edwards hit Henry harder than anyone else and was the one person out there who brought him down where he hit him. Didn't realize Edwards hit that hard. -

Thought this was fitting, and hilarious.Darnold is tearing the Texans up. Panthers get up and Davis Mills has to throw every down he's in for a long day. -
