Another week, another mass murder
oldmanfan replied to SoTier's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
True, but let's say this idiot goes into the grocery store with a baseball bat or a knife. I would say the people there have a much better chance of running away, or having a group bring him down, than if he had the kind of weapons he had. I am all for background checks and all for more mental health services. They'll help, (and what the hell was his family doing here??), But this comes down to simple math. If you have a knife or a gun that can only shoot say six rounds vs. one that can shoot hundreds, then math tells you the latter can do more damage. I have yet to see a persuasive argument as to why you should be able to buy these magazines that allow one to shoot so many rounds. -

I respectfully disagree. I believe he had pled guilty to assault. A comprehensive background check would have shown that, and if you've been convicted or pled guilty to a violent crime I would suggest you should not have the ability to purchase a firearm. -

I read your comment and you made some very good points. I agree. But attacks in Asians are way up in the past year and I have a personal stake in this because of my daughter. I do not deny that. -

I don’t really care what the ethnicity is of the people attacking Adan Americans. It is wrong no matter what. As I said above can we not all just agree it is wrong without parsing the issue? -
Not Sure We Will Repeat as AFCE Champs
oldmanfan replied to hondo in seattle's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Let me respond: 1. Our best ST guys were not Roberts and Bojorquez. Our best ST guy was Bass. 2. We kept Williams at RT; without him we would have had to retool at that position. 3. Our D will be helped by Star coming back into the 1 technique. Keeping Milano is also a plus. They still have a couple pieces to work on there. 4. The Pats tried to buy a team in free agency. That rarely if ever works in the NFL. And if Cam is their QB they are still going to have issues. 5. Saying Tua should be better seems to be a wish to buttress your argument. From what we saw of Tua last year I am not worried. And the Jets will still probably have Darnold and if not a rookie signal caller who will have to adjust. No question we'll have to improve the run game. But teams are going to have to figure out how to stop our passing game, and to the tune of a 13-3 record no one could last year. -
McKenzie adds speed. And Sanders will be jsut as effective in speed as Smoke was, since Smoke was hurt. I expect more speed to be added on defense.
-
Good to see this. McD emphasized we need more speed on the team overall, so this makes perfect sense.

I feel they will pick up a vet FA pass rusher once the dust settles. And I see them drafting a 1 technique DT. I also think Phillips should be better at the 1 with more time post ACL surgery.

My daughter and her friends live in fear of it every day. I know I have a personal stake in this but why the hell can’t we just agree this needs to stop without trying to parse the issue? -

I responded to someone questioning why some look at the Atlanta shooting as a hate crime. Those with Asian backgrounds as my daughter see it that way because they have been targeted with much greater frequency in the last year and they are scared. I also responded to someone questioning if the rhetoric used over the past year about the virus had anything to do with it. It has. As the father of an Asian daughter I am asking, demanding really, that we as a society recognize that this group is being targeted. Maybe not by this piece of filth in Atlanta, but there is no question it is happening across our country and it needs to stop. I agree. We can start by demanding bias and targeting of Asian people stops. I am particularly concerned with that group because of my daughter, but we should do so for all groups that are targeted. -

This is one of the issues of bias my daughter would cite. Many people just see someone who looks Asian and lumps them together, whereas there are significant appearance and culturally differences between Asian countries. -

I have seen no data to support the contention you claim, suggesting it is blacks that are primarily responsible. Bottom line is that in 2020 attacks against Asians is way up. -

Yes it did. Here’s a couple examples from personal experience. 1. I mentioned above the Vietnamese restaurant next to my daughter’s campus that was attacked. Among the slurs written all over the walls were Kung Flu. So yes, if you haven’t figured it out yet words have consequences. 2. Early in in the pandemic a friend of my daughter (adopted the same day; we travelled with her parents) and her younger sister (also adopted from China) went to the grocery store to pick something up for their mother. A clerk looked at them and told them they don’t serve people like them, that they were why people were dying, and acted very threatening towards them. Two teenage kids who have been in our country since infancy and as are American as you can get. So you can take your denial and put it where the sun doesn’t shine. Open your eyes and read the news. Attacks on those of Asian heritage have risen greatly in the last year, and it doesn’t take a genius to see a main reason why. -

I appreciate your kind thoughts about my daughter and others like her. Two points: 1. I absolutely agree that using mistreatment of those in the AAPI community as a political pawn is wrong. No question. 2. You can criticize the Chinese government without that being racist. -

First is just recognizing it’s a problem. What my daughter would tell you is just that acknowledging it’s an issue is a big step forward. So if you know someone who is of Asian descent, ask them how they’re feeling, or if there is anything you can do even if it’s just providing a sympathetic ear. Second, if you see or hear anti-Asian behavior in your community or workplace, speak up. Don’t let it slide. The increased level of incidents against Asian Americans is due in part to them being considered a silent minority. It is felt that Asians are the successful minority and thus have no problems - that is untrue. Asian American women in particular are singled out as sex objects by many men - my daughter shared a term for that which just stunned me. In her community it is called “yellow fever”. Google AAPI (PI being people of Pacific Island descent) and there are organizations that describe other ways all of us can help. -

It was there but not anywhere near as bad. I have seen estimates suggesting 200% increase or more in incidents over the past year -

I'll tell you why. Because they feel threatened all the time and when they see 6 Asian women murdered it scares them even more. Now, I don't know what the exact motives of this idiot were; he may very well have been reacting because of sex addiction. But here's the thing: for my daughter who is adopted from China and her friends who are also Asian-American, or Asian immigrants, or whomever - they feel they are under assault. Open your damned eyes and look around you - elderly people of Asian descent are being targeted around the country. My daughter and her friends just saw a Vietnamese restaurant next to their campus broken in to and destroyed, graffiti with Asian slurs painted all over the inside and outside of the building. The owners are selling because they fear for their lives. I want to hear from every single person posting in this thread. Answer one simple question for me: is targeting Asian people just because they are Asian OK with you or not? Everyone should say no. And if you don't, you should be glad I don't run into you in person. -
I absolutely HATE our team’s focus on Special Teams
oldmanfan replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Listen. The only guy on the team that you could argue was only signed this off season for special teams is Taiwan Jones. One player. Matakevitch showed last year he's a decent backup LB, Neal is a good 6th DB in addition to being a beats on ST. To rant about essentially one player who is really good on ST is ridiculous. Put another way, when you're the only person who claims 2 + 2 = 5, and everyone else shows you that 2 + 2 = 4 and give you the reasons why, you might want to listen instead of howling at the moon that it's 5. -

Which is to say all of us should have been more aware and more in solidarity with the anti-Asian bias all along. I have as I have an Asian daughter. But sometimes it takes blatant acts to heighten awareness. -
