  1. My daughter and her friends live in fear of it every day. I know I have a personal stake in this but why the hell can’t we just agree this needs to stop without trying to parse the issue?
  2. I responded to someone questioning why some look at the Atlanta shooting as a hate crime. Those with Asian backgrounds as my daughter see it that way because they have been targeted with much greater frequency in the last year and they are scared. I also responded to someone questioning if the rhetoric used over the past year about the virus had anything to do with it. It has. As the father of an Asian daughter I am asking, demanding really, that we as a society recognize that this group is being targeted. Maybe not by this piece of filth in Atlanta, but there is no question it is happening across our country and it needs to stop. I agree. We can start by demanding bias and targeting of Asian people stops. I am particularly concerned with that group because of my daughter, but we should do so for all groups that are targeted.
  3. This is one of the issues of bias my daughter would cite. Many people just see someone who looks Asian and lumps them together, whereas there are significant appearance and culturally differences between Asian countries.
  4. I have seen no data to support the contention you claim, suggesting it is blacks that are primarily responsible. Bottom line is that in 2020 attacks against Asians is way up.
  5. Yes it did. Here’s a couple examples from personal experience. 1. I mentioned above the Vietnamese restaurant next to my daughter’s campus that was attacked. Among the slurs written all over the walls were Kung Flu. So yes, if you haven’t figured it out yet words have consequences. 2. Early in in the pandemic a friend of my daughter (adopted the same day; we travelled with her parents) and her younger sister (also adopted from China) went to the grocery store to pick something up for their mother. A clerk looked at them and told them they don’t serve people like them, that they were why people were dying, and acted very threatening towards them. Two teenage kids who have been in our country since infancy and as are American as you can get. So you can take your denial and put it where the sun doesn’t shine. Open your eyes and read the news. Attacks on those of Asian heritage have risen greatly in the last year, and it doesn’t take a genius to see a main reason why.
  6. I appreciate your kind thoughts about my daughter and others like her. Two points: 1. I absolutely agree that using mistreatment of those in the AAPI community as a political pawn is wrong. No question. 2. You can criticize the Chinese government without that being racist.
  7. First is just recognizing it’s a problem. What my daughter would tell you is just that acknowledging it’s an issue is a big step forward. So if you know someone who is of Asian descent, ask them how they’re feeling, or if there is anything you can do even if it’s just providing a sympathetic ear. Second, if you see or hear anti-Asian behavior in your community or workplace, speak up. Don’t let it slide. The increased level of incidents against Asian Americans is due in part to them being considered a silent minority. It is felt that Asians are the successful minority and thus have no problems - that is untrue. Asian American women in particular are singled out as sex objects by many men - my daughter shared a term for that which just stunned me. In her community it is called “yellow fever”. Google AAPI (PI being people of Pacific Island descent) and there are organizations that describe other ways all of us can help.
  8. It was there but not anywhere near as bad. I have seen estimates suggesting 200% increase or more in incidents over the past year
  9. I'll tell you why. Because they feel threatened all the time and when they see 6 Asian women murdered it scares them even more. Now, I don't know what the exact motives of this idiot were; he may very well have been reacting because of sex addiction. But here's the thing: for my daughter who is adopted from China and her friends who are also Asian-American, or Asian immigrants, or whomever - they feel they are under assault. Open your damned eyes and look around you - elderly people of Asian descent are being targeted around the country. My daughter and her friends just saw a Vietnamese restaurant next to their campus broken in to and destroyed, graffiti with Asian slurs painted all over the inside and outside of the building. The owners are selling because they fear for their lives. I want to hear from every single person posting in this thread. Answer one simple question for me: is targeting Asian people just because they are Asian OK with you or not? Everyone should say no. And if you don't, you should be glad I don't run into you in person.
  10. Listen. The only guy on the team that you could argue was only signed this off season for special teams is Taiwan Jones. One player. Matakevitch showed last year he's a decent backup LB, Neal is a good 6th DB in addition to being a beats on ST. To rant about essentially one player who is really good on ST is ridiculous. Put another way, when you're the only person who claims 2 + 2 = 5, and everyone else shows you that 2 + 2 = 4 and give you the reasons why, you might want to listen instead of howling at the moon that it's 5.
  11. Always look to build the lines if you can
  12. Maybe not round one but a big tub of goo 1 tech DT is on my list
  13. Which is to say all of us should have been more aware and more in solidarity with the anti-Asian bias all along. I have as I have an Asian daughter. But sometimes it takes blatant acts to heighten awareness.
  14. They’ll add a veteran DE
  15. We will find out the motives of this nut in Atlanta as things go forward. Meanwhile the data shows big upticks in attacks against Asian Americans, and it causes my daughter and her friends to live in fear. Everyone in this message board should quit trying to play politics about this, and band together and call it out for what it is: racial prejudice. And it is wrong. Period.
  16. I can say he would not necessarily improve the roster. Is he really better than Kumetow or Hodgins as the 4th WR?
  17. Many thanks Matt. You’ll always be a Bill. Best of luck.
  18. They kept Taiwan Jones and Matakevitch. The latter is also a decent backup LB; the former is a great gunner on special teams. So really one guy on a roster of 53 at not much cost and we get complaints? Get over yourself. You would have said we should get rid of Tasker.
  19. I appreciate your thoughts. Do me and my daughter a favor. If you hear someone disparage those of Asian heritage just because they’re Asian, call them out on it and tell them just what you said here. If we all do this it will help.
  20. I don’t know about this particular incident but as the father of an Asian daughter I can tell you that she is scared and that she and some friends have been hassled. Drop the left vs. right political crap; this is a real problem and people like my daughter are suffering for it. Instead of making it about politics tell all those you know to treat Asian Americans like any other American.
  21. Beane is not done yet. HE's letting the dust settle and will likely pick up a couple more FAs - veterans who et released for cap reasons. Relax.
  22. It was inevitable that Kruger got canned. But it's not just the coach and Adams knows that. How many coaches have the Sabres burned through with the core players on this tam? Its about the players. I liked what I read from Adams yesterday about having a one way conversation with the team this morning, about having pride. I hope he walks into the locker room today, and lays into the weak little boys that make up this roster. And I hope he cuts the first one that gives him any lip, or pouts or (like Harrington wrote in his column today about Reinhart) rolls their eyes. Adams knows what it takes to win in the NHL, he knows you have to bring it every day, every shift; it's how he lasted so long in the league. He may not have GM experience but I think he knows what guys show passion for the game, and he'll move the ones out who don't have it.
  23. They lost Thuney and Cannon from their O line. That hurts.
  24. I have a daughter that is adopted from China. She has been an American citizen since she was 11 months old. She is as American as anyone on this board. And she is scared. And I am scared for her. What do I do for her right now?
