6 Dr. Seuss Books Won't Be Published for Racist Images
oldmanfan replied to T&C's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I'm going to guess you get all your information from right wing media sites. There's an old saying: if the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. No one is being "cancelled" and if people are losing their businesses and such it is because their comments are driving away customers. For example, I as an Independent will not buy Goya products because their chair espouses ridiculous takes on the past election. Same with Mr. Pillow. I choose not to do business with companies whose chairmen would spout such junk. If you can get more of your friends to make up that business, then they won't go out of business. The free market is a wonderful thing. -

This cancel culture stuff is fake. Societies undergoes changes with time. Businesses adapt to that. Again, in this particular case no one that has a rational brain is calling Theodore Seuss a racist. But in his time people of certain ethnicities were drawn in particular ways or characterized in certain ways. Like the Asian workers in his books. Or Hop Sing on Bonanza. As society changes such stereotypes are considered inappropriate, and as such businesses don't want to alienate customers, and make decisions on that basis. If you are say a white Anglo-Saxon like me, and you decide to no longer buy Dr. Suess books because they don't keep the stereotypical pictures, what does that say about you or me? We absolutely should live up to reverend King's standard. we're not there yet. A Vietnamese restaurant near my daughter was vandalized last week just because they are Asian; terrible racist slogans printed on their walls and now they feel forced to close. she has had racist comments made towards her because of where she's born. Dr. King has set the ideal standard; we have a ways to go to get there. -

The publishers can simply reprint these 6 books with updated artwork. Or not. It’s their call and it appears they’ve made it. You honestly should stop making exaggerated comparisons like repainting all the pictures in the Louvre. It detracts from your arguments and makes you look silly. -

And decades later when you see there are stereotypes there’s nothing wrong with fixing it. Did the books do permanent harm? No. Can they be improved? Yes. And what is the harm in doing so? -
Pegulas are the owners, they bear responsibility for the hires they made. With Kruger and Adams I think they want a pair that focuses on process and accountability like they have with the Bills. Whether they are the two is open to question. When do players accept accountability? I’ve watched the Sabres since 1970 and I’ve never seen a team with less heart. Coaches can do so much; when do players look within themselves. If I’m Terry I have Rick Dudley on the phone and ask him for an outside appraisal.

No, they were never intended to be racist. Yes, an Asian individual like my daughter could look at them and be offended by some of the pictures. So 50 years later you fix that. No big deal. -

You live and learn. I would never have been offended back in the day. But as the dad of an adopted Asian child I look at some of the pictures and they project a sterotype common back then that should not have been used. So the Seuss people realize it, and from what I understand will change the pictures and re-release. Win-win for all. -

As I recall Dr. Seuss favored liberal positions. I don’t think he was a racist. He was like many of us growing up in earlier times. We told jokes about different races, ethnicities and such. We called guys we didn’t like fags and such. Because that was what we did. And we were too dumb to acknowledge the error of our ways. I have two kids ages 25 and 19, and their generation gets what my generation should have gotten. They treat all with respect regardless of skin color or sexual identity and such. Good for them. -

When I first read this I thought it was ridiculous. But then I looked at some of the pictures, and how they would affect my one daughter who is adopted from China. And some of the pictures depicting Asians really are pretty bad and offensive. -
Committed perjury. That's a conviction in my eyes.

I felt he should have been convicted in the Senate. I don’t think there’s a dearth of scumbags on either side of the aisle.

Research funded by the NIH and NSF has been a godsend to our country. -

That won't work. It's a global market now. Good answer. We need to focus back on funding research to get us that innovation. -
The trump party really has no leg to stand on when it comes to sexual harassment claims, don't you think? The answer to the issue with Cuomo is simple; he screwed up and he should not remain in office. The same should have been said about Trump before he ever got elected. Biden to me not so much; his was acting in his mind more paternalistic to me but I can appreciate the argument against that. Now you have this young Congressman from NC that is being shown to have a sexual harassment history. We used to have people of integrity running for office. That used to be a pre-requisite; things like character mattered. Now it's just a cesspool all around. And please stop with the Democrats being in lock step as if they are unique in that regard. Or did you not watch any of the CPAC conference this past weekend?

How should we help our manufacturing base compete in a global market where wages are so much less in certain countries? Serious question. -

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

He bases his comments on the data. He has since the pandemic started and as the data changes his thoughts change. Preeminent scientists don't go off hunches. You know better. -

My apologies but it did sound that way. There is no question Fauci is one of the best in his field in the world. He does not shoot from the hip; he looks at data and is appropriately cautious when doing so. -
Good dialog. I don’t think they got lucky with McD and Beane. McD was on the short list of coordinators ready to take the next step. They looked at several guys and bought into his idea of bringing a process to building a consistent winner, and that having a GM in concert with the HC was essential. I think they approached the Sabres in a similar way. Kruger is a guy who very much believes in process and a system that should produce winning hockey. And after his first year they brought Adams on as a GM in concert with the HC. Is it working right now? No. Is that because they might have to get rid of some players who don’t want to buy in and get guys that will? Probably so. Every coach and GM will have their philosophy of how to build of course. But some of these players have now been through 3 different coach/GM combos with no real on ice difference. They need to look in the mirror.

Some good points here. My view is that leaders lead. And he is not that.
-
You can keep burning through coaches if you want, go ahead and fire Kruger and bring in Julien or whatever other guy that got fired that you want. But the problems with this team are obvious, and can be summed up in one word: Eichel He is getting paid to be a superstar and plays, at best, as an average NHL player. He is being paid to be the captain and the leader, and is as far from a leader as you can get. The goal yesterday where he lets the guy waltz right down to the front of the net to score, and then blames Dahlin, is a prime example of his nonsense. And when your supposed leader does this, then it infects the entire team. Get rid of the infection. Trade Eichel and let him poison another franchise. Get guys back that actually want to put forth some effort, go into the corners and hit guys, that want to actually earn their money when on the ice. Dahlin looks like he cares; give him the C on his jersey. Or give it to Staal, a guy who understands what Cup winners need. So far Eichel has burned through a former Stanley Cup winner in Bylsma, a guy that wanted to coach an attacking style in Housley, and now a guy that preaches process and accountability in Kruger. And all three coaches can't get him going? Please. When Kruger was hired and then when Adams got lifted to GM, I saw the Sabres trying to do what worked for the Bills: a coach and GM with a process they felt would lead to success, and who would work in tandem to get players would would match and align in that system. Yes, some will say that their process is flawed, and that they need a coach and GM that match their system to the players. But again, three coaches have tried to do that with a lot of the players on this roster, and none have succeeded? That tells me it's the players and not the systems. And the player most guilty is Eichel.

Dr. Fauci is the preeminent infectious disease specialist in the world and has been so for decades. To throw insults at him is petty and silly. I am quite sure he voiced any concerns he had about such matters to the various administrations he has worked for over the years. And administrations that did not take appropriate precautions against pandemics regardless of party were wrong.0
