Respectfully San Jose (I normally agree with you) most of us here are old enough to have already formed an opinion about Jim Brown. He is someone that I have read a lot about. The issues you bring up about race are valid, but they don't negate everything. When he threw a woman off of a hotel balcony, was he sure she wouldn't die? Honeslty, for all the good things he has done, he is one failed murder attempt from being OJ Simpson. Not sure if it was directed at me, but I never mentioned "angry black man"....just that I think he has pretty consistantly displayed a pattern of somebody with anger management issues. I also happen to think he has hid behind some of those civil rights issues to distract from real crimes he has committed. Maybe the closest thing to a contemporay that Jim Brown had, was Bill Russell. They are about the same age, and both were, to some degree, pioneers in their sport. Both were active in the more radical elements (as viewed by mainstream America) of the civil rights movement...and both were described at various times as "angry black men". They couldn't be more different. Russell wasn't a self promoter...he spoke with his actions. No fists needed.

Yeah, as another, not young enough to have really seen him play (I was born in 1965), I assume he was as great a football player as he has been made out to be. But, like many, I also remember all the lurid headlines...whether beating up somebody with a golf-club in a case of road-rage, or throwing a woman off the balcony of a hotel, I think he has definitely had some issues over the years. It also bothered me, a few years ago (maybe 10 years ago, I can't even remember when) he was charged with domestic vilonce, but eventually, his fiance (was if wife?) dropped charges...but he did jail time for "vandalism" because he smashed the windows out on her car, in a public place....at the time, IIRC, he was offered a lighter sentencs, but wanting to play the martyr, he took the jail time, and made a lot of noise about being unjustly persecuted, the inference being that this happened becasue he was black. As I recall, his fiance/wife, had visable physical injuries. So, at the very least, he was guilty of being angry enough to smash the **** out of an automobile, but, as he seems to always do, he turned his transgression from an embarassment for him, to a soap-box moment, to further his own legend as an activist and civil rights hero. I always thought he was a chicken-**** coward with a martyr complex. I also take some issue with his continued "harrassment" of modern star athletes (Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods come immediately to mind) for not being willing to take a more verbal and visible stand on racial and political issues. I would commend Woods and Jordan for doing so, but I really don't think it is any of Jim Brown's business how these guys conduct themselves. He can act as though they owe him something for being a "pioneer" for the black athlete, but he doesn't really acknowledge the fact that he has made a pretty good living simply off of being Jim Brown (certainly more than his less popular peers in pro-football), NFL football legend. He may not have made the big bucks that modern guys make..but he has sustained himself on his name alone. What does he really do for the Cleveland Browns, other than be a cheer-leader? I had an ongoing argument with an overnight sports talk-show host (JT the Brick) on this subject for years. Brick loves him, idolizes him, and thinks he is an exemplary human being... he points out all of the charity work he does, and all of the work he does, and has done, for inner-city poverty and to prevent gang-violence. All those are noble things, and I am sure Brown is sincere in his efforts...but I just can't get past the man on woman violence issue. It is something th at dogged him, going all the way back to his days at Syracuse. He was accused (though the case was tossed, and was likely trumped up) of raping a coed. Again, the ugly rape accusations turned up in the 1980's... I guess, in the end, Jim Brown is like most of us...an imperfect human being. I do sympathize, to a degree, with Brown and his situation with Holmgren. He was, by all accounts, a tremendous football player, and after all this time, still the face of the Browns franchise. He has paid whatever price deemed appropriate for his non-football transgressions, so, in my book, you can't judge somebody for the rest of their life. And, Holmgren has always struck me as a smug prick. Funny thing though, Brown (I saw an interview on NFLN over the weekend) says that Holmgren didn't "respect him", and said he was "making too much money". In all likelyhood, he probably was making too much money for whatever he was doing.

Game changer to be sure...haven't read the books so that was not completely expected.

Is Jim Kelly ill ?? (update - has cancer)
Buftex replied to mitchmurraydowntown's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Best wishes Jim. -
I am quite sure the dolt who uses "Guns Of Brixton" as his bumper music has no idea of the context of the song. Just as, whoever it was, decided using Springsteens "Born In the USA", or, even, "Back to Ohio" as used by Rush... they are just tapping into a lyric, and whatever anger or edge those lyrics have. If there is one bad thing in this era of communication overload, all context and nuance is lost on many people...or they just don't care to recognize it.

Why are Lawson and Branch missing?
Buftex replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think they have to spend their first week or so in some administrative office, filling out newbie paper-work, and listening to company mission statements. -
What coach does Marrone remind you of?
Buftex replied to Over 29 years of fanhood's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Still don't have a real feel for Marrone... I don't mean this as a criticism of him, but I think he is trying to be a young Parcells (not necessarily a bad thing)....but I am guessing, coming from an NCAA background, he is a bit more PC than Parcells was... I am leaning toward a the older Tom Coughlin that won a couple of rings, not the younger Tom Couglin that tried to be a Parcells clone. -
This particular guys' main reason for being on the air is the gun issue it seems...I think he is drawn in by the lyrics...seems to draw in on this whole fantasy about the current administration going house to house to take your guns: "When they kick in your front door, how you gonna go? With your hands on your head, or on the trigger of your gun? When the law break in, how you gonna go? shot down on the pavement, or waiting on death row? You can crush us, you can bruise us...but you'll have to answer to, the guns of Brixton"

I don't know...I actually like both of those songs... they were their sort of big "pop" hits. and, predictably, made many at the time dub them as "sell outs"...but they age pretty well... they always did cool little rockers (normally Mick Jones songs) like "1-2 Crush On You", "Train In Vain" and "Should I Stay..." so it fits pretty well for me with the rest of their stuff. As far as Casbah goes, it just incorporated a lot of world music elements that weren't very mainstream at the time, and offered some commentary (for lack of a better word) on the Middle East...being a white suburban teen at the time, I didn't know wtf they were singing about (maybe I still don't), but the song is just a nice burst of energy..and it gave Strummer a chance to flex his sort of preacher style of singing...I think it is a great single...heard it for the first time in probably a few years, just recently...it still sounds fresh. I can't think of a band from that era that used musical friction to their advantage, any better... Speaking of the Clash, was listening to a local conservative talk-show in the car the other day...they were using "Guns Of Brixton" as their bumper music...timeless lyrics, it seems...

Completely agree on the Clash. In the era when most bands still put out an album a year (as opposed to two studio albums, a live album and a greatest hits album), I would actually put the Clash up there with the Beatles in terms of evolving so much in such a short period of time. For me, Stones, Beatles, good Who, Faces, Clash and Replacements are about as good as modern rock-n'roll ever got. The Clash were a bit more political in nature, so I suppose, I can understand why some might not appreciate them as much...but my god they kicked ass....loved the records, and their live shows were some of my favorite shows ever...remember going to see them a number of times on their 1982 tour, in Buffalo, and a couple of times in Canada...they opened for the Who on some dates....groovy times! Glad to see Mick Jones still popping up from time to time...very under-appreciated (a term I prefer, after this thread, to "underrated") guitar player...

Every sportscarster in Amercia was praying since Isiah came into the NFL, for him to fail a drug test!

Yeah... the fact that she is a bit pretentious has blinded some people. She is a very nice looking lady. I remember the first movie I ever saw her in, "Flesh & Bone". She had a small role, but kind of stole the show...at that time, I had no idea who she was. I had no idea that she was Blythe Danner's daugther. Blythe was pretty attractive in her day as well...

Sarah Silverman has a new song/video out
Buftex replied to Just Jack's topic in Off the Wall Archives
You think she had a nose job? -
Juli Lynn Cialini Not so good with this kind of stuff. I have seen some of these kinds of things go for $100, and others for a "couple of dollars". Visit the Trading Post, one of the sub-forums on The Stadium Wall. I will be listing some stuff soon. Some EJ, Kikio Robert Woods, Goodwin autograph cards, along with lots of other old and current vet favorites!

You know there is currently band called Goblin rooster?

I kind of agree. As much as I hate to admit it, Dallas has a really solid franchise, and a great fan-base. Ruff just seems more like a Dallas guy than a Vancouver guy to me. Which, of course means nothing. Normally, money prevails. I hadn't heard Ruff linked to the Vancouver job. I wonder if the fact that Team Canada flamed out under him, in the World Championship, again, has cooled a Canadian team on him. That kind of thing might have more repurcussions in Canada than it would in Dallas.

Sarah Silverman has a new song/video out
Buftex replied to Just Jack's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Yeah, with Sarah Silverman it is all in the delivery...I think Schumer can be funny, but not even the same ballpark as Silverman, IMO. I will say, Sarah can be uneven... but when she is on, she is dead on. I also think her bits are not necessarily well rehersed...and you know, she is a bit of a stoner, so she can lose her train of thought now and again, but she always reals it back in at some point. -
Has he talked to Vancouver? I hadn't heard that. I must say, I don't like the Canucks at all...but it has nothing to do with their relation to the Sabres (as with the Flyers and Stars)...after not seeing them play much, a few years ago, I assumed I wanted them to beat the Bruins in the finals. But about half way through the second game of that series, I just couldn't pull for that team, at all...I hate the way they play, and not a big fan of the Sedin twinks.

Will EJ Manuel make the top 100 NFL Players next year?
Buftex replied to Ludwig van's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not really sure what to expect from EJ Manuel. I just hope that people aren't getting a little too far ahead of themselves with this...you know what happens to rookies in Buffalo, if they struggle at all...they are automatically "busts". Love what I have seen, but those are only highlights. Experts (for what that is worth) seem a little more skeptical that he is going to be ready to go out of the box, so-to-speak, but most agree that he has huge upside. For me, that translates to mean that we are going to have to be patient... I suspect Kolb will be starting the first few games...at least. -
Don't know why, but in never imagined Lindy migh end up coaching the Dallas Stars, but it appears the Stars might be interested. http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/dallas-stars/headlines/20130527-report-dallas-stars-gm-jim-nill-closing-in-on-naming-coach-had-contact-with-lindy-ruff-alain-vigneault.ece It appears that Linday, and former Canucks coach Alain Vigneult are the final choices. Not sure how I feel about this...other than the fact that I have two Stars fan friends who always tease me about Lindy the whiner..."no goal" and all... I like Ruff... when he was fired the rumor was out there that he had passed on the Tampa Bay job, in hopes of getting the Flyers job. Ruff coaching the Flyers was unsettling to me...never even had the Stars on the radar. If he does end up in Dallas, at least Nill did him a favor and got rid of Derek Roy ahead of time!
