This has been on the back-burner for a couple of years now. I remember reading speculation that you could see as many as 4 current NFL teams splitting their seasons between countries. At the time, speculation was that the Bucs owners, Malcolm Glazer, already owning an even more valuable asset in the Manchester United, would be the first to go...they could eventually play as many as 4 games (first two-last two, or maybe first 4 games of the season or last 4 games of the season) in London...eventually 3 other teams would join them as US-Euro franchises, to make up a Euro division....of course, at that time, the Bills, as I recall, were mentioned as a Buffalo-Liverpool team. Love the Beatles and all, but this would make me sad...it seems the plan is to eventually have a brand new franchise in Toronto, not a current team moving there.

This had to be intentional...no coincidence. Apparently the red star was an anti-Viet Nam war symbol.

Writers Guild Of America Best 101 Written TV Shows....
Buftex replied to Just Jack's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Got no real quibbles...though I would likely rank Breaking Bad a tad higher...especially in terms of writing. Kind of difficult in most cases to compare dramas and comedies, side by side, making no distinctions. Like all these things, it all comes down to personal tastes I suppose. -
It has been discussed, for whatever reason, in the Game Of Thrones Season 2 thread... people get so mad about spoilers, and hiding spoilers is a pain in the ass...so I normally wait to comment after a lot of others have...god forbid I be the one to ruin their day by letting them know they will likely never see the gorgeous naked ass of Talisa again...

Oh no you didn't!

Okay...so the last 3 episodes or so are starting to feel almost like "Mad Men" again... though I never would have bet on it happening, and would have been completely opposed to it if i were in on the creative meetings for this show, I loved the Don/Betty tryst... back to back weeks where Don is left feeling like he has been used, instead of the other way around. I still think Betty can be a great character, when they write her better storylines... Crazy theory out there tha Megan is going to end in violence. Not saying I buy it at all, but there have been numerous moments of "foreshadowing" that something bad is going to happen to her. Not unlike Lain Price Theory takes notice of all the sirens heard in the backround when Megan has a scene... the fact that they referenced her forgettnig to lock the door a few times (how Sally's "grandmother" got in the apartment), the fact that they keep makeing us aware of the ever-increasing danger on the streets of NYC...and then, the nail in the coffin, so to speak: Don goes out to the balcony to talk with Megan, standing in her panties and a t-shirt...lots of sirens in the backround, and the t-shirt she is wearing (the red star) is the same iconic t-shirt that Sharon Tate (one of the Manson family victims...Roman Polanskis' wife) wore in a famous photo-shoot for Esquire, shortly before her death.

Although Bills fans can be complete dickheads, I think, as a collective, they are smart enough to understand that Manuel is still in devlopement. Like I said in an earlier post, his (seemingly) superior skills could help him, and the team, have some early success, as he learns. Vince Young was kind of in the same boat when he took over the Titans job...he won a lot of games, using his ample athletic skille, despite not being a great QB. The difference is, by all accounts, Manuel is pretty bright, and coachable..two qualities that VY didn't seem to have. They drafted a "franchise QB", and they have to trust the coach, and the staff they hired to get the job done with this kid. We seem to always fall into the thinking that this or that "never happens"...but the truth is, players have been proving a lot of those old school notions wrong, for a while now. The Bills seemed to have stockpiled speedy, young receivers (granted they are all pretty much un-proven) for a reason. I know there are questions about EJ's accuracy...but there is no question about his arm strength...let him work it out.

Okay Chef...I go out of my way to defend the Stones...the today I am rewarded on my Facebook page with a video (linked by the Stones site themselves) of the Stones performing their 60's classic "As Tears Go By', with the "hot", but woefully untalented Taylor Swift...what a freaking train-wreck! I still love that band, but why do they always make me "look the other way"? It is one of the worst, most awkward performances ever... Sadly, it is typical of what they have been doing the last 4 tours or so...bring out a young, "flavor of the month" tart for Mick to cavort with on stage for a few awkward moments...it normally sounds like the female singer, somewhere in the 20-25 range has only heard the song they are performing for the first time about 20 minutes ago (although, in the case of Taylor Swift, she is such an awful singer, she just can't sing live without her auto-tune)...just terrible. I guess it is not a big enough turn-off for old geezers like me to stop going to their shows, but I certainly don't see it winning them over any new fans...nowhere in America is little Alexis telling daddy to pull into Walmart so she can get a copy of the new(est) Rolling Stones greatest hits collection "GRrrr.." ''cuz it has that song that Taylor sang with creepy old lizard guy"... I love the Stones too much to link it here...I am embarassed for them.

Saw the Stranglers at the Continental in lovely Buffalo, NY many, many years ago...probably somewhere between 1983-1987...they were great then! A Stranglers classic...great for any summer mix-tape...

Not sure if OP saw the interview this past week on NFLN with Jim Brown, upon the announcement that he was returning to work with the Browns. He simply stated that he felt Holmgren had "no repsepect for me, and said that I was being payed too much...he just wanted me to dance (team cheerleader I took this to mean, not unlike Jim Kellys' job with the Bills), and I don't dance". He want on to make it clear, he had no respect for Holmgren either: "He wanted his own people in there, so that is what he did...they made a lot of money". Now, I am no Mike Holmgren fan either. But, he was the team President and GM...of course he wants his own people. As I recall, the team, like many, was having financial difficulty, and was likely looking to cut operational costs... Brown couldn't really give any real answer as to what made him so vital to the organization. They lost with him in the position, surely they could lose without him. When pressed as to what his role would be with the Browns new (crook?) owner, Brown said essentially "doing whatever they ask me to do, to keep the Cleveland Browns brand name relevant, and doing whatever I can do to help the Cleveland Browns win football games." He also expressed his undying loyalty to the new (soon to be embattled) owner. So, yeah, it sounds like he can dance if he wants to....as long as your paying.

The Onion is the best!

Not sure if that was a response to me...but I agree...maybe they will sign Legursky (sp?) from the Steelers...but from what I know of the guys we have, I don't know if the O-line is better (it wasn't horrible last year), and may be worse. Of course, Marrone is an OL guy, so there is that... If you remember, NFL rookie of the year, Vince Young managed win a whole bunch of games on sheer athletic talent (as opposed to being a superior QB) his rookie year. I won't pretend to know how college abilities translate to the pros, but Manuel looks to have a big arm, some speedy (though mostly unproven) receivers, and some mobility. Not sure if it is the best way to bring a guy along...but I am also not sure that another season of crappy football is in the best interest of the franchise health, either. This isn't to say that Kolb may be better than I am thinking...I just can't get that game against the Bills last season out of my head though. I know, he had a miserable O-line...but he and Fitz set the QB position back decades that Sunday... after the Bills won in OT, I remember walking out of the bar with some other Bills fans...one guy said "well, at least we know Fitz isn't the worst starting QB in the league"
-
I was kind of in the camp that said Kolb would likely start the first 6 games or so...and if the Bills had a losing record, the EJ3 era would begin... but I am starting to get the feeling that EJ might just start in week one. Nothing against Kolb, but I would be so jazzed to see EJ Manuel vs Cam Newton in week 2. Not wanting to start another QB thread, who do you feel will be the odd-man out in the QB race? I am assuming it will be Manuel, Kolb and Tuel. I can't for the life of me figure out why Tarvaris Jackson re-signed with the Bills, for pennies, before even checking out the free-agency market. I seem to remember, at the time (this was before they had released Fitz, signed Kolb, or drafted Manuel) thinking it was kind of odd. I also remember hearing that a few teams "might be" interested in him, if he was a free agent. Oh well, I bet he regrets it now. Unless, of course, he outplays Kolb, and they let him go. How likely is that to happen?

Part of what makes rock n'roll, and jazz, unique is that they have co-existing aesthetics that appeal to different people. For me, Keith ripping out a riff that is a tad sloppy, on the borders of where it should be, what we expect it to sound like, is what makes it rock -n'roll... that whole "living on the edge" affect. When the Stones have been at their best, they can sound like a train that is about to go off the rails, but they always manage to be saved... On the flip-side, you have bands like Rush, whose fans will wax poetic about their technical merits, and absolutely flawless timing...they bore the crap out of me... some people dig that more than others. We just all have different reactions to things. I can appreciate technical dexterity as much as anyone (as a lousy drummer, I am in awe of people who can play), but it doesn't have much emotional resonance. To me, it is like my girlfriend being amazed that I can normally figure out exactly what is going to happen during one of her Lifetime movies, before it happens...most of the time, within the first 10 minutes of the movie. It has all the elements of a movie (actors, actresses, a scripted story, a beginning, middle and end); it's a movie, but not necessarily a good movie.
