Identity theft, and dealing with the IRS anyone?
Buftex replied to Buftex's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Thanks for all the advice gentlemen. Pretty scary stuff. I must say, if somebody was trying to steal from a random person, they couldn't have picked a worst victim...I have nothing to steal! That said, I am doing my due diligence and taking all the recommended precautions. I still have to file a police report, which, from what I am hearing is kind of a waste of time... but I suppose, the more precautions I take, the less likely I can be held libel for any illeagal activities or debts incurred in my name (or moreover, my social security number). Luckily, my sisters husband (I don't really know him that well, and didn't even think to ask him for help initially) is helping me a bit...he has been dealing with this kind of stuff for 20+ years. What is most frustrating, this could be id theft, or a simple mistake by somebody, somewhere (not me)...but from what I gather, I am going to be spending the next 2-6 years cleaning it up! -
I was chomping at the bit, for years, to be able to watch the NFL Network...finally, last year, my prayes were answered and Time Warner added it to their selections... I won't say it is awful, but it could be so, so much better. I still flip to it each time I turn on the tv to make sure I am not missing something, but it is rare that I keep it there longer than a minute or two. Why not have regularly scheduled "classic games", the same time every week? At least durig the off-season. And, I don't just mean every freaking Brady/Mannig matchup... show us other great games.... the 3 hour versions, not the NFL films condensed. What, are they afraid that would cut down on the number of times they can show the "Top 10 Greatest 1 Yard Runs In NFL History"? I was thrilled to see, today, they are showing Super Bowl 13, between the Steelrs and Cowboys, from 1979. I would much rather see an old early 80's Cleveland Browns "cardiac kids" replay, but they have to force feed us the same teams, over and over...just glad it is an older game... I would love to see some actual game broadcasts from the 70's and 80's and early 90's. To watch the channel, you would think the NFL was born when Tom Brady made his first NFL start. I know Steve Sabol made some comments that the NFL, as it is now, doesn't want to celebrate its' past as much as, say, baseball, because they always want to present an image of "going forward" and being "cutting edge". But hell man, that attitude is already turning a lot of people off from the game. Maybe it is an age thing, but there are a lot of us 45 and older fans too...we grew up on this stuff, not all of us are making the transition to soccer. Sorry...I realize, I am hijacking this thread....off on a tangent...

I own all of the team highlight films from 1960-1997, and most of the rest after that as well...normally, by late June, early July I am pulling them out to get my Bills fix...I can watch this stuff over and over and it never gets old... -
Identity theft, and dealing with the IRS anyone?

It was the number on the letter... I have dealt with enough IRS invoices to believe that it is legit. But, just because you said that, I just typed the number in, and it comes up as an IRS number. What I don't get though, if it was just a simple transposing of numbers, wouldn't the letter have had just my name and address? I am not doubting you are right, but it just seems odd to me. Yes, getting the 90 day flag put on there was simple...they offered another option for longer, but to be honest, by that time, I had been on the phone for close to 3 hours, and 90 days sounded alright. As you know, but others may not, if you go through one of the credit bureaus (I called Experian), they tell you that the other 2 major companies will automatically be notified. -

Wow...a year later? The IRS lady did say it wouldn't be resolved quickly. Called my brother in-law, a CPA (I forget sometimes)...he is going to file my taxes for me...he says no to get too freaked out over it as well...sage advice I guess! NG, I am assuming you didn't know the person you "filed" your joint return with, either? Actually I did the report to Experian (and the two other credit companies) already, before doing a police report. It was the easiest part about this whole thing so far..all just touchtone away...they have a flag on my SSN# for 90 days. -

Nope. Nothing... just a single guy, with an income of about 35 grand. What I am trying to figure out, is this woman who is on this mysterious return trying to steal a refund claimed in my name... or trying to make me libel for anything she might owe....or is she just some random person whose ID was plucked out of the air by ID thieves, angling for some bogus return? I am not scared (though a little embarrassed to admit) I am kind of a rube when it comes to financial things. -

Nothing, yet. Just a notification that they are "conducting a thorough review" of "my" return, as there appears to be issues with "Income reported on your return", "Income tax withholding amounts you reported on your return", "claims for tax credits you made on your return" and "business income you reported on your income". The are not requiring me to do anything at this time, but I should be prepared with any information supporting the data made on my claim. In the process of doing everything she recommended. She stressed to me that it would not likely be resolved very quickly... ironically, to complicate things further, I am going to be moving, in a few months, from the address I have been living in the 12 years..... -
So, I get home from work today, check the mail. A letter from the IRS addressed to me, and a woman who I have no knowledge of. Apparently, this woman and I are being audited by the IRS. My name, her name, my address, my social security number! The way things have been going lately, this seems fitting... Anyone ever deal with this? After spending 1hr & 20 minutes on hold with the IRS, I am not confident that this is something that is going to be easily fixable. In addition to filling out an identity theft form with the IRS, I will need to do the same with the Social Security administration, the Federal Trade Commission....oh yeah, it is also recommended that I file a police report! I haven't lost any money, no credit cards have been tampered with....I am tapped, so there is nothing for them to steal from me. The woman I talked to at the IRS recommended that I find proof of residence going back as far as possible... get a letter from my employer verifying my ID, address, etc etc.... The one thing that will help, I think, is that I have not yet filed my taxes this year...I owe about $200 I think, so I am no rush to pay...but now I am just stressed out... Not even sure what I am asking here...but anyone ever have to deal with something like this? Any tips on making this easier, before I blow the single gasket I have left?

Sorry, just that age old quandry...if everyone only knows one song by them, how influential can they be? I realize it is not as simple as that... just a funny contrast. I must admit, in keeping with the spirit of this thread, they bore they daylights out of me...but I realize they are significant in some way. The "one song" (I assume you are talking about "Creep") is only memorable to me because the Pretenders covered it.

I heard over the weekend, the Pats were trying to make a trade with the Falcons for Julio Jones. The speculations was that Wilfork would be part of that trade...now, I realize, the Pats have since re-signed Edleman and also Brandon Lafell, so they might not be as willing to go all out for a JJ trade now...but I just think the Pats will keep Wilfork and make him play out his contract, before they will just out-right release him and let him go anywhere he wants. If they are willing to trade him to a divisional oppenant, I might be leary of making that deal...

Just a bit of useless trivia: if you watched "True Detective" you will recognize the girl who plays Lizzie as one of the incarnations of Marty's (Woody Harrelson) daughter.

Yeah..that was pretty heavy. Must say, it has been a long time that I think a series has gotten better, the longer it has been on....another really strong episode.

Not sure you can really fairly gauge Campbell from his time in Cleveland... he has a pretty decent stretch of about 3.5 seasons on his resume... nobody is saying he is a superstar, but he was without a doubt the best QB on the Redskins and Raiders squads during his time there... Redskins didn't want to pay him, and the Raiders were distracted, as is their way, by the shiny new things...he lost his job there after six games, because he was injured...he had been having a pretty respectable season. I just think you can do a lot worse for a backup. Given the Bills injury problems at the position, is it necessarily wise to head into another season, where you hope to make some strides, with your hopes dashed if your young QB goes down, again? The guy has started about 80 NFL games... that doesn't make him great, but there must be something to work with there. From three of the most inept franchises in the NFL. The Bills may be in their class, but as Bills fans, (most of us) are assuming that will not be the case in the future.

Most of these injuries can just as easily happen in training camp as they can an exhibition game....don't lose sleep. -

Guilt mostly. He said that we should be happy that things of such high quality are made for us to enjoy, and everytime he reads comments, like mine, it reminds him of the "suggestions" he gets anytime he turns in a screenplay...sometimes the points are valid, and useful, but more often it comes off as somebody missing the point you were trying to make, or take your vision, and change it to match your own. I may not be explaining his point correctly, but I felt it. I know it is a frustrating profession, being a screenwriter...for every success, there can be 100 failures.

I kind of, respectfully, disagaree...there are plenty of action shows that have stronger character development. Don't want to be a prick, but I just think the writiing for this show has always been too erratic. I know they had writer issues the first few seasons. It is ambitious to have so many characters, but it can be done. If people don't care about the characters, there is a fairly good chance they are going to lose interest before too long..zombie kills are cool, but you can't sustain a whole show with them....
