Well, Kiper did say that he thought Sammy was the best "yac" receiver he had ever seen, in his 36 years of draft analysis...should we be scared?

One of the headline stories on my homepage today was about a politician who was caught, on camera, picking wax from his ear and sticking it in his mouth...

Jeepers... silly season is still in full progress I see...

Yeah, Sterling didn't do himself any favors. For some reason he is taking all of his **** out on Magic Johnson.... who was really, honestly, just an innocent bystander in this whole thing...

Unlike Kiper's A- grade, Texan's Johnson not happy…
Buftex replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am actually pretty surprised that Andre Johnson is still a Texan. He has been pretty un-happy there for a while. I almost expected them to try to trade him during the draft. Thing is, if he just wants to rack up numbers, he could do worse than Fitz. -
Pettigrew is one of those guy who has never been as good as he was "supposed" to be. And, his production appears to be going downward. I am not sure, at this point, getting him would solidify the tight end spot any more than Chandler, Moeaki and Gragg. Even at his best, Pettigrew has just been "alright". I think people are a little harsh with Chandler. He is serviceable, the fumble against the Falcons not withstanding, and has shown to be a solid receiving tight end over the last 3 years or so. Sure, if Pettigrew was a free agent, I would "kick the tires", as we love to say...but I really don't think he answers our tight end problem.

Gregg Easterbrook on the Watkins Pick
Buftex replied to quinnearlysghost88's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't buy that at all, either. Is losing 1 first round pick really leaving a future GM or coach a mess? It is not as though the roster doesn't have plenty of talent to work with. I just think those critiquing this move have an exaggerated sense of how much value a first round pick automatically has. Its' the player, not the pick. I would bet, knowing what they know now, there are more than a few GM's who would trade their 2013 first round pick for, say, Kiko Alonso. There is "first round talent" to be found throughout the draft, just as there is 2nd-7th talent drafted in the first round every year. If they believe in Watson as much as it appears (and the Bills aren't the only ones who seem to view him as a generational type talent) then a first round and a 4th round pick, IMO, is a pretty modest price to pay. -
I think, somewhere along the way, Mel started taking payola to hype some of these kids...

"Awesome" Bills Jersey seen at the Draft
Buftex replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
No problemo. I knew you would come around! -
Would any QB they took late in the draft be a better backup option in 2014 than Thad Lewis with 4 games under his belt, and a full training camp in Buffalo?

"Awesome" Bills Jersey seen at the Draft

I got a chuckle out of it. Many WNYers have a great sense of gallows humor... I actually take inkmans attitude as more self-loathing than what that guy is wearing on his back. -
Bill...you are one of the best posters here, so no stones from me. I just don't agree with you. They don't know who the new owners will be. And, if it is like you said, they feel the need to "win now" to pass the tests for the new owners, is that a bad thing? They addressed some very legitimate needs with this draft. In fact, the only thing they didn't really address, this whole off season (it isn't just the draft that goes into building a team these days) is a new starting tight end. But even there, it seems, they are pining their hopes on Gragg or Moeaki...and if they don't step up or work out, then there is still Chandler... maligned as he is around here, he is still a serviceable NFL tight end.

Shelly Long was way better on Cheers than Kristy Alley...or Sandy Duncan! -
jboyst, I think you are missing the point on this one... if you were gay you might feel a lot different, and this might seem a lot more significant to you than putting bacon on a cheeseburger. So a significant sector of our society should continue to live in the shadows, so it won't upset the few people who are still prone toward getting upset about homosexuality? Jim Kelly with a twist!

Well said Metz, and transient. What I am getting from most (not all) of the people who are saying "who cares?" is that they are fine with gay people, as long as they stay in the closet.

Watkins trade compared to Julio Jones trade
Buftex replied to Ludwig van's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You do realize, the Bills didn't give up two #1s. Right? Why can't people wrap their heads around the fact that we got a #1 pick which we used to draft SAMMY WATKINS? -
I know that draft grades really don't matter, but...
Buftex replied to beggar13's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would say worse. The only grades I have seen for the Bills so far (Charles White and Daniel Jerimiah) were an A and a B+. I think those grades were based largely on Watkins, -
He isn't very good.

Apparently your first name has to star with a D, to sign as UDFA with the Bills, Wonder if Doug and Doug would make an exception for Joe DON Duncan!

I found it curious, when Sam first came out, as I recall it was on a Friday, the first 24-48 hours of hype surrounding the story, pretty much everything I read/heard, said that he was projected to be a 2nd-3rd round draft pick. By Monday, when everyone in the media and the NFL was back from the weekend, all of the sudden, the SEC co-defensive player of the year, was being talked about as if he might not be drafted at all, of course, all based on his football abilities. It seemed like every team and every NFL executive tweeted out some statement of support for Sam. Don't know, it sure seemed like a choreographed, preemptive strike, from the NFL, because they knew damn well his sexuality was going to be an issue among a lot of their teams. I don't discount the argument that teams may have just taken him off their list, because they didn't want the inevitable distraction this would cause, more than any homo-phobic issues...but it would be naive, and dishonest to pretend that was not a factor at all. He didn't have a great combine, but a lot of guys don't, but are still drafted for what they actually did in games... Sam played well in games... Interesting to note, in the last 10 years, only 3 of 54 players named as defensive player of the year, in their conference, went undrafted. Of those 54, of the 10 from the SEC, only one went after the 2nd round. I realize their can be other factors involved in all of that...but, i think that is an indication that he maybe wasn't given the kind of consideration he might have been, if he hadn't come out. http://thebiglead.com/2014/02/10/michael-sam-only-one-other-sec-defensive-player-of-the-year-has-been-drafted-outside-the-first-two-rounds/ jboyst, I think many feel the same way as you...myself included. But there are obviously those who don't. It is still an issue for a significant number of people out there... seems as though most of Sams high school and college teammates knew, and had no issue. But there are a lot of folks, who aren't as accepting... whatever happens, this is an actual real legit news story...sure, we will all get sick of hearing about this...
-
Well, whether you like it or not, this is a pretty huge story. Get used to it...like it or not, you will be hearing about this all summer... the NFL Network would have been crazy, and not doing their job (they have been on for 60 hours or something like that) if they didn't address it.

Watkins trade compared to Julio Jones trade
Buftex replied to Ludwig van's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think your opinion on this trade (whoever you are) depends on how you feel about the direction the team is heading. There are some people (you know who you are) who will think that anything the Bills do is stupid, because EJ Manuel is their QB. There are others (I am one) who don't think Manuel was near as awful last season as others prefer to remember...for us, this seems like a very good deal. Essentially, the Bills got the highest rated WR coming out of college in the last 5 years, for a first round pick. We all know, the draft is a crap shoot...but experts seem as sure as they can be, that Watkins is going to be a terrific, upper echelon NFL player. If that happens, I don't see how you can view this as a bad trade. The 4th rounder is not that big of a deal... the Bills have already replaced that #4 with the Johnson trade, and will very likely do some more wheeling and dealing next draft. How often has it happened, in the history of this franchise, that we have come out of the draft knowing that we have just obtained what is, arguably, one of the very best, if not the very best prospect in a draft? If Watkins turns out to be a complete bust, have at...but until then, just quit being so miserable about everything regarding this team. We joke that the misery is part of being a Bills fan...and perhaps that is true. Wouldn't you rather go into a season, for once, feeling like we might be on to something. The franchise (and fans) have developed this "lovable losers" image by doing precisely what everyone always thinks they "should do"...you know, staying put in the draft, picking up some nice to not so good players...and continuing to hold their ground as a solid 6 or 7 win team every year....so they finally swing for the fence on a pick, and a vocal majority whines because they didn't play it safe, like they would have... -
Doug Marrone and the Culture he is Creating
Buftex replied to The Plunge's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Let me preface this comment by saying that I feel more optimistic about this team than I have since the Tom Donohoe years. I love the team they are building...and it doesn't feel like just more or the same, even though the results, record wise were pretty much the same as they have been for a while. As pleased as I am, I am still not sure if I completely sold on Marrone, and his coaching staff. I don't hate them, but I feel like last season left me with as many questions as answers about our coaching staff. I am reserving judgment for now. I think most of my optimism about the team comes from Doug Whaley. -
