A great show...unlike anything else on tv. I have a hard time describing it to anyone...it is a comedy, but can be pretty deep...I love the fact that there is no hard-core format to the show...sometimes it is one story, other times, just a few "short stories" told in 21 minutes....amazing the roller-coaster you can go througn in one half hour. I have been getting spoiled by the "back to back" new episodes....anyone know if this is the way it will be all season? I think Louie hooks up with the Hungarian lady tonight!

I also think, had the team been in the thick of a playoff race, EJ might not have missed as many games as he did. I can't blame them, but I think Marrone and Co were being very overly cautious with him. You can read into that what you want... but I think his knee injuries weren't as serious as some are making them out to be. If they were, I think he would have been IR'd early on. I guess it is always easier to remember the bad than the good, espeically when the team finished with (another) 6-10 record. Manuel showed a certain amount of "clutch" abilitly last season... rarely seemed overwhelmed by any situaion (Tampa Bay game notwithstanding), and generally, followed up his bad play with very good play. Why does everyone feel this desperate need to crush the kid? It's almost like people want him to suck, despite the tell-tale "I hope EJ succeeds..." before proclaiming him a bust.

I don't think I have ever used this phrase once here...but, here goes: Spot on!

Great episode last night... I don't want to sound all girly about it, but glad that Don and Peggy cleared the air... I kind of get the feeling that Don knows his days are numbered (at the agency, and with his wife)...I am just predicting, the "mid-season finale" ends up with Don leaving SCDP, maybe Megan too...and we spend the last episodes (next year) seeing Draper create a completely new life for himself, ala Dick Whitman...maybe he even changes his name back to Dick Whitman... I kind of like the whole dynamic of Roger sort of getting his "swagger" back, coninciding with Don's fall from grace... like that Roger (and Pete I suppose) is the only one who feels any loyalty to Don. He has been around forever..shows up in a lot of odd things.... I bet he probably is funnier doing the Carolla show, or something like that. There are a lot of comedians out there, these days, who I think fall in to that category... not very good at stand-up, but hilarious when bouncing off of somebody in conversation. I know, most here loathe Bill Maher. I think he is, generally, pretty awful as a stand-up comic, but in just conversational humor, he is hard to beat... Sarah Silverman too... it is just a different style I guess. Back in the days when I would see those guys, stand-up comedy, and going to see stand-up comedians, was kind of a fad (like kaeoke or something), and there weren't a lot of other outlets for comedians....I can tell you, as bad as I thought Havey was at that time, Louis CK was pretty painful too..but now he is one of my favorites. Times change..

Mike Williams highlights as Buccaneer
Buftex replied to Fixxxer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sorry, can't seem to respond to specific posts on my phone, but to whoever was saying that Marquees Goodwin had established himself over Graham: it is true, Goodwin impressed more, but I don't think he made it through a single game without getting injured. That is part of being reliable. -

Agreed with whoever said Woods is kind of forgotten, especially in national coverage of the team. No denying that Manuel and Woods had chemistry last season, that no other QB/WR combo seemed to possess, for the Bills in 2013. Woods plays with an attitude...if he adds a few pounds he might be just that much better. Doesn't mind doing the dirty work..in fact he seems to relish it. -
I am "all in" on EJ, and think rumours of his suckiness are highly overdone....that said, I do believe, Mayock has expressed dobuts about EJ more recently, in the buildup to this years draft....

Mike Williams highlights as Buccaneer
Buftex replied to Fixxxer's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have been saying since the day they traded for him, Mike Williams is an upper echelon WR, if you take away his off the field issues. I will admit, I have probably only seen about 6 Bucs games since he has been in Tampa Bay, but every time I watched them, he stood out as a great talent, not just "pretty good". People have been talking about him as if he is questionable to make the roster. The Bucs didn't just extend his contract for no reason. The guy is real good. If this season goes well, it is likely that the trade for Williams will go down as Whaley's shrewdest move. The fact that Marrone approved the trade (I am assuming), given that their previous time together at Syracuse didn't go so well, makes me feel pretty good about the prospect of this working out, on and off the field. I liken what he brings to the offense to something like what Eric Moulds did for us, in his prime. The only thing that will keep him off the roster, is the kind of stuff that made Lovey want to get rid of him. Just has to stay out of trouble...lets hope a return home is good for him... even before drafting Watkins, and assuming we were looking at a WR stable of Mike Williams, Stevie, Woods and Goodwin going into the season, I thought his addition was a huge upgrade for the offense....I think what he can add, along with Watkins will be more than adequate to replace what Stevie brought to the field. -
Cost of Watkins = Typical Media Bias against Buffalo

Not that it means much, all these years later, but Kiper was mostly right in criticizing the Colts that year. They didn't have a legit starting QB. As I recall, they signed Harbaugh after the draft...and he had been pretty bad up to that point in his NFL career. The basis of Kipers' criticism was (and it was the word going around the NFL at that time) was that the Colts weren't picking a QB in the first round (Shuler and Dilfer were the top QB prospects that year), not because they didn't like either guy, but solely because they didin't want to pay a 1st round QB salary. The Colts were known as a thrifty, cheap team back then... now, the fact that Dilfer was never more than functionally adequate as a QB, and Shuler was just flat out awful, in retrospect, makes Kiper look stupid...but Trev Alberts was worse than both. It is like the Colts were not even trying to get better, only trying to save money. -

BN: Despite feeding tube and constant pain, Kelly toughs it out

I watched that interview last night...it was tough to see the guy, obviously in so much pain. What did make a real impression, how much happier he looked, and sounded, when he was talking about the Bills. I have had a hanful of people in my family pass away from cancer over he last 4-5 years...it was tough to watch. During those times of their suffering, I always wanted to spend time with them, but I often felt like they were in so much distress and discomfort, my company was probably only adding to their discomfort... I had a brother in-law who went down fast...when it was really in the dire stages, everyone was trying to comfort him, and he, honeslty, just wanted to be left alone... the best times, my sister said, he told her, that last year, was the couple of times during the two weeks I went to visit them, where we just sat and watched the NBA playoffs together. We didn't like the same teams (me Celtics, him a Lakers fan), but he just enjoyed taking his mind off that pain...he was sick to death of thinking about his cancer, and talking about it...when we weren't watching the games, and just talking sports (we didn't have a lot more in common, other than my sister), you could just see/feel how miserable he was...but when the games were on, he seemed so much better... -
He got Reich's number!

Yes, he has a great vertical leap, great concentration, and will fight for the ball in the air. I have heard him compared to Larry Fitzgerald, not just for the obvious hair reasons. Btw- Mike Williams also possesses this Mouldian skill that you speak of.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Kjkh3yV8YA -

I have read numerous "experts" on Watkins, and nearly every one seems to feel that Watkins was far and away the best receiver in this years draft, many claim he is the best of the last 5 drafts...and some felt like he was the best player in this draft, regardless of position. One guy (Mel Kiper Jr from ESPN) says that Watkins is the best "run after the catch" receiver he has seen in his 36 years of covering the NFL draft. So, it sounds like the prevailing attitude amongst "experts" (fwiw) is that he is that much better than Beckham..and Evans, Lee, etc etc If you stop and think about it, this may be the first time since the Bills drafted Bruce Smith, or OJ Simpson before him, that the Bills have walked out of the draft with arguably the most coveted player in the draft class. I know, I know....people will say it is irrelevant because our QB sucks. While I don't believe that to the case, supposing it is...look at the highlights on this kid. For as many rainbow passes he caught and took to the house, he had just as many screen passes thrown his way, where he separated the defense and passed through multitudes of defenders...he really doesn't need a lot of time or space to make something happen. He really is like an elite speed running back at WR. And, he shows a knack for fighting for poorly thrown passes... Relax a little and try to enjoy... -
Report: Bills attempted to trade up for Carlos Hyde
Buftex replied to johnwalter's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know man. I like Spiller a lot... but just listening to Marrone throughout the 2013 season, I got the distinct impression that Marrone was not impressed with him. I would not have surprised, nor will I be surprised (just disappointed) if he is traded, or allowed to leave via free agency. Spiller, by his own admission as I recall, owned up to bouncing outside too much this past season, but as has been noted, he was likely trying to avoid some contact, and his instincts were telling him that his speed could get him around the corner... he seemed to have broken this tendency, but it was back in 2013. I do think the offensive play calling (for many reasons) did not really do Spiller a lot of favors. There was never any attempt to get him into space, as Chan was able to do. I think the running game play-calling lacked some imagination last season. I am willing to give Hackett some slack, as there was a lot to overcome for an inexperienced OC. -
Believe it or not, in the 80's, my older sister used to do make press kits for a lot of comedians, including Havey, Seinfeld, Dennis O'leary and even Louis C.K. She used to be on the guest list any time any of them performed. I saw all of them a few times... Havey would often host at the Improv, you know, introducing all the comedians on the bill. Used to have a blast, but I have to say, I never thought Havey was funny, at all. Nice enough guy...but whatever he was selling, I wasn't buying. As for this weeks episode, what a roller-coaster. They had been hinting at Ginsberg losing his mind for a while, but for some reason (silly me) I thought he would lose it in a more comic kind of way. That whole thing was pretty harrowing. Nice that Peggy got a scene this season where they show her in a good light...watching tv with the neighborhood kid...the way she handled Ginsbergs mutilation was as perfect as anyone would hope they could react in that situation. I wonder if that is the last we see of the character. I noticed the actor playing him has shown up on "Silicon Valley"...not that it means anything. For some reason, I think Don's power play at the end is going to back-fire on him. Cutler seemed infuriated... Don seems to have outworn his welcome. Could they buy him out, and he try to break-off and start his own firm? There seems to be a lot of hard feelings between some of the two firms that merged. Teds' group doesn't seem to care much for any of the Sterling, Cooper and Price people. From the previews for next week, it looks like Ted and Pete are returning to New York...whether permanent or temporarily. I have to say, I was a little confused by the whole Megan/Don thing. Relationships are complicated, I get it (I could write a long, boring book on it), but I thought they were done the week before... I guess the menage a trois didn't seem to have the desired affect, as far as Megan goes. I guess it was some last ditch attempt to save their marriage. I also had a hard time understanding what womanly psychology was going on between Megan and Don's niece (Stephanie?). Did Megan just want her gone, so she could spring the menage a trois on Don... it was just hard to figure out... I don't think she was jealous of her, or was she? I know a lot of people hate Betty Draper...and at times, it seems her storyline is just completely unrelated to the rest of the show...but I like how they are masterfully showing how the parents affect their kids. Poor Bobby, you forget he even exists sometimes...Sally thinks he is still wetting the bed... he seems pretty damaged. I know January Jones gets a lot of hate, and I can't honestly say that I think I have seen her in anything else...but I think she is really amazing in this role. Every time the character becomes a little more sympathetic, she flips. As for what Tony Kornheiser said, I kind of agree. It hasn't really been gone an extra long time, I just think the last season was kind of weak in comparison to my expectations for it. It was a little disappointing. I think it started to become a little too aware of the times it is supposed to be taking place, and the show suffered a little for it. I realize, these are supposed to be chic, cutting edge elites in New York, but there were episodes last season that felt like they were just kind of excuses to get the ladies into new outfits. They really avoided this kind of thing in earlier seasons...as great as the JFK assassination episode in season two was, the MLK assassination seemed to be trying to have more resonance than it did on the screen. Some great moments last season (Bobby and Don watching Planet of the Apes was one of my favorite scenes from the show, ever!), but it just wasn't cohesive enough. Just seemed like a lot of random things slapped together at times...it ended well...and I think this new season, four episodes in, has been much, much better. I really hate the fact that it will be ending so soon...until next year.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't CJ's contract expire after this season? If that is the case, the Bills would have to trade him before this season (2014), or at least before the trade dealine in October (?...or whenever it is). If he plays out this season, without a trade, or signing an extension (remember he says he is going to "get with Jairus Byrds' agent), he is as good as gone...unless the Bills franchise him. Not sure they are going to want to get into that situation again.

Retired scouts view on our draft.
Buftex replied to D. L. Hot-Flamethrower's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Eh...we all know it, but nobody can say anything about this draft, in its' entirety for another 2 or 3 years... As for Kiper, I am not a Kiper apologist at all, but he isn't always wrong, and he isn't always right...just like the other 957 "draft experts" out there. Because of his high profile in the field, he takes the most ****. And, by and large, he is accountable for his miscues. I did hear him say, Sammy Watson was the best "run after the catch WR he has seen in his 36 years of analyzing NFL prospects. -
Well...no offense to LeBron, and I understand and sympathize with his sentiment, but I think he is kind of over-stepping here. He isn't playing for Sterling, and will have the power he needs to make sure that doesn't happen, ever. Now, if Chris Paul, or Blake Griffin said the same thing, it might seem more appropriate. If LeBron did sit out next season, in protest, that would give another team a chance to win a ring! Should I be rooting for Sterling now? Yeah, that was kind of disaster.... "What did Magic Johnson ever do? All he did was go around and sleep with every woman in America, and get AIDS. He isn't a role model, he should be hiding in shame... (in the same breath) I respect everything Magic has done... I love to give money to minorities....if Magic would tell me where to donate money, I would be happy to." Apparently, he felt the need to attack Johnson, because Magic declined to do an interview with Barbara Walters, with the two of them, in an attempt to rehabilitate Sterlings' image.

Read something earlier today (sorry no link) that I thought was pretty funny...the scene a couple of weeks ago, where Dany and company come upon Mareern, the guy shouting the insults toward her and her army: this was dialogue lifted, in tribute, from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Haven't seen Holy Grail in about 20 years, but I thought that was pretty cool. Apparently, there have been a number of "easter eggs" like this in the foreign tongues spoken on the show, over the years.

No offense HamSandwhich, but I think Whaley speaks fine... if he stutters, or stumbles over words on occasion, I interpret that as somebody who hasn't rehearsed their answers, but knows what they want to say, faster than they can articulate it. I do it all the time, as I suspect many of us do. Kind of the way things go on a job interview. If you think about it, this is really the first year that he is interacting with the media to this extent. He isn't a politician, he is a football guy... I think he accords himself just fine. I find Marrone much harder to listen to. I think that is because he chooses his words so carefully, that they stop making sense after a while.
