I have had times when I go back to get the necessary permissions to quote people and they change their mind and now want everything that was recorded to be off the record. You build up a trust with them as you are talking. They end up forgetting that the recorder is on and start blasting away. With certain people, I have an unwritten "off the record" whenever we talk and they know that. Therefore, they trust me and they say things they normally would not say. I would never betray that trust.

It's amazing how that works, isn't it?

If those sources had to go on the record, they wouldn't make those statements. I see it all the time when I am interviewing players, coached and administrators. They will tell me a lot of things, but they refuse to go on the record. If they had to go on the record, they would never make most of the statements.

I am not sure the Dan Rooney really helps your argument. The reason why stuff was given to Art III is that Dan was given the ambassadorship to Ireland. When he was with the team, he was making the decisions. The last Super Bowl win for the Steelers was under Dan Rooney's control.
