It’s known that racism and xenophobia are two side effects of Ambien. Says so right on the label.

That’s why Roseanne shouldn’t have been crucified for her Hitler baking cookies bit, which she did for a satire magazine called “Heeb.” I say “shouldn’t have” but her history of bigoted and racist remarks disqualifies her from that benefit of the doubt. Which is a shame because satire is such a powerful tool and people, especially younger people, would be well served to remember that.

No disrespect, but what qualifications does one need to have an “opinion” on another’s ability as a writer? Credentials as an editor or other related discipline? You hit the nail on the head with your comment on subjectivity. When a journalist puts his work out there for public consumption, that work is subject to criticism from writing professionals and lay people alike. Credentials mean little in that regard.

I keep hearing that guy who used to do the voice overs for horror movie trailers. “The 2018 Buffalo Bills thought it was just a draft like any other...until it all went wrong. Very...very... wrong. A draft so full of unspeakable horror and blood curdling mayhem, you have to remind yourself, “it’s only a draft, it’s only a draft, it’s only a draft.”

I’m struck by the contrast between your first two sentences. Imo, writing 2-4 similar columns over 10 years is the very definition of lack of originality and lack of talent.

Let's also not lose sight of the fact that this is the land of false equivalencies and the "yeah, well what about..." defense. Left wingnuts like Olbermann ranting about politics and looking like an ass is a FAR cry from tone deaf idiots like Roseanne making blatant, PERSONAL racist remarks. Advertisers have shown ZERO tolerance for that recently and, as popular as Roseanne's show was, Disney and its vast network have other advertiser-supported shows to worry about now and in the future.

I had the same thought when he was telling Poyer to stay down after his INT at the end of the Miami game.

Hopefully, new columnists will emerge who can offer biting criticism when warranted without the childish and unprofessional snark that too often littered their work. For example, old school journalists like Larry Felser had no problem leveling strong opinions against the Bills while maintaining their professionalism which allowed them to also maintain solid relationships within organization. Bucky and Sully were esentially blacklisted because of their inability in doing so which only served to further feed their spite and cloud their objectivity far too often in their work.

Because we don't interpret everything through our subconscious and will power exists in the conscious mind. I'm not saying the subconscious isn't a powerful influence over our behaviors; it's just not the only controlling factor. I agree the distinction has been intentionally blurred, not to mention exploited, and consumers live in an ever expanding echo chamber. That doesn't mean we are incapable of discerning the difference. We most certainly are. The problem as I see it is choosing to make the distinction.

Is it your position that people base their interpretation and understanding of a news report on another person's opinion of that same report? I don't share the same level of contempt for people's ability to think freely. But you are describing something far more insidious; the purposeful exploitation of the subconscious to exert control over our decision making. That's been going on for decades as research has shown our susceptibility in that area. From subliminal suggestion to the propagation of mass media with less regulation, we are easy targets. The onus is on us to realize that and to guard against it. I think we can. I don't think the whole anthem controversy rises to that level, though.

Where we hear about something is one thing. Basing our opinion on the opinion of others is entirely different.

The military isn't a very big advertiser compared to others so I'd be reluctant to say it was the military exercising that kind of influence. But in looking at the industries on the list of top 10 advertisers and their own exploitation of the flag and patriotic identification in their own advertising, yeah, I can see the league listening if they raised a stink. And it's not like the league is gonna wait for them to complain, anyway. The anthem policy is all about protecting their revenues.

People tune in to get their opinions. Although they both have strong backgrounds in journalism and maintain sources, they don't break a lot of news. They are paid to interpret and comment. Nothing more.

That's not a report. That's op/ed. If people can't filter simple reports and make up their own minds without a panel of talking heads to tell them how to think, that's pitiful. But I don't believe the majority of people are that helpless.

What constitutes much? There have been several reports about the various anthem policies of teams in other sports.

What would be a neutral, non-inflammatory way? A simple reporting of the facts should suffice. As in "so and so chose to stay in the locker room during the playing of the national anthem today. Players and team officials refused to comment." Unfortunately, many people can't discern the difference between a report and an op/ed piece or, worse, don't even want to given the polarized viewpoints on any particular subject. Many out there would take that simple report as being anti-league when it didn't lean one way or the other, for example.
