  1. Every once in a while you will have an outlier. You couldn't build a team like Tampa on purpose...........a lot has to go right to go from being the league's biggest underachieving team and not getting torn down after that season.......and then being the biggest underachieving team in the league thru 12 games of the NEXT season........to then winning the SB in dominating fashion 2 months later.
  2. I thought he did a solid job at Alabama too..........but I also thought he might get fired by Saban had they lost that game. He was chewing Daboll a new one on the sidelines early in that game, it was quite amusing.
  3. Stills ASKED for his release and it was granted. He was unhappy with his usage and unhappy with things going on in the organization(specifically a firing of a popular PR executive) and becoming a pest about it on social media. But they held onto him until he had the leg injury and it was clear that the injury was probably going to keep him out most of the rest of the season. So there was no reason to hold onto him any longer if he wanted out.......and they obliged. Everyone familiar with the Texans will tell you it was a crowded WR room. Deep enough that Keke Coutee.........a player with a higher career average yards per game than Cole Beasley.......was the guy that was previously being de-activated in favor of Kenny Stills. You didn't do your homework on this one Hap. Just own it.
  4. I like where you are going with this.........IMO the best and longer term return on investment for this team is going to come from investing on the offensive side of the ball. That requires excellent pro and college scouting work on the defensive side of the ball.........but that's why they have this all-star staff. If Whaley and company can find a Zach Brown and Lorax for pennies in the span of a week in the bargain portion of free agency and have them turn into the league's leading tackler and a DPOY candidate then we should hope that this staff can find some bargains to provide better bang for the buck than some of the previous UFA shopping trips.
  5. I've seen Leonard Williams associated with long term $20M per year quotes.
  6. Clock is also ticking though. He'd be 47 in his first NFL game as HC in 2022.......the trend is more toward hiring younger first time HC's. As I've said.....as far as his HC aspirations go....showing growth as a game planner and play caller would be more useful than just a repeat of this past season. He'll get his chances to show off.......the road game at KC could be big individual point for his candidacy after two clunkers against the Chiefs in 2020.
  7. There isn't really a lot of space between Daboll being the NFL assistant coach of the year and 6 years of WOEFUL offenses. There is just one season. There was a lot of hyperbole thrown around about him during the season.......how brilliant he was and how it was inevitable that they were going to lose him to a HC position...........a lot of people forgetting that he has an overwhelmingly poor track record as an NFL OC.........hence my point about being "overrated"...........and then during the postseason his offense did not look good and it culminated in a woeful performance in the AFC Championship game. Like I've said........I think he's a good enough NFL OC........you might even say that that type of OC is the kind you want because he shouldn't warrant a ton of HC interest due to a very poor early track record.........and therefore you can keep your system in place and draft and develop for it and hopefully that OC continues to grow as a game planner and play caller.
  8. Stills might be washed but you are wrong on two important counts: 1) The Texans didn't just choose to release him.........he ASKED for his release. 2) The Texans had a deep and high quality veteran WR corps........the X and Z that Stills would preferably play combined for 2,000 yards receiving.
  9. I think a lot of people here do think that his recent award is proof that he is an elite OC..........those who point to it as proof that he isn't overrated think that he just won the MVP award for coordinators. The reality is that those type of awards tend to be given out to they who most exceed expectations. And Daboll is a guy whose high water mark in 6 years of NFL OC work was what? 24th? So yeah he made a jump from never having an offense that wasn't bad to one that was near the top of the league.
  10. Watson had a better statistical year than Allen even last year..............both more productive and more efficient on a worse team. I am a huge Allen fan......but he went from one of the least efficient passers in the NFL in 2019 to one of the best just last year. You likely don't realize this but Allen's amazing improvement in accuracy still finished him below Watson in that regard in 2020. 4 seasons of top QB play vs 1 = more proven. And fwiw he's less than a year older than Allen. He was much better than Russell Wilson last season. He was better than Brady. Rodgers is certainly acceptable as perhaps better than Watson right now.......but that's also debatable. Not debatable that he is one of the top 5 QB's in the NFL. Very hard to find a trade value match for a 25 year old QB who is THAT good.
  11. Athletes who get physically better in their 30's usually do so because they get better informed on substances that will help them improve performance. I suspect that is part of the deal with Fitz but the thing he really lacked in Buffalo was power in his core and subsequently his throwing arm and that kind of power is something that can improve with age from mid-30's to mid-40's. That's why it has always been fairly common to see heavyweights box effectively for so long. Fitz arm got miraculously stronger about the time he was in Houston. Maybe JJ gave him a good connect down there or maybe Fitz just put on some good weight in the core. When that happened he ceased to have to throw his whole body into every pass that traveled over 20 yards in the air and that improved his downfield accuracy immensely. Agree that he should be able to play for several more years.
  12. Current slot WR not real excited about this idea
  13. So enough Bills fans are irrationally critical of Daboll that you can label "Bills fans" in general as anti-Daboll? I think you are exaggerating a lot there. Daboll has a mostly unsuccessful history as an NFL OC....... it's illogical to suggest otherwise.........because it's just a fact..........he has plenty to prove yet. That doesn't mean he can't but there are plenty of coaches who had a brief run where they looked like geniuses and then it turned out it was just a good idea or two that was caught on a rising tide that doomed them to success. Briefly. What you want to see from a great coordinator is the kind of thing we saw from Wade Phillips for decades...........the ability to adapt and get the most out of the personnel on hand consistently from week to week and from year to year. Not just a brief success.....even if it were GREAT like that of a Sam Wyche or Mike Martz.
  14. I think it was Bojangles.
  15. Just glad you finally found out who the donor was.
  16. The only re-work that makes sense will require lowering Brown's scheduled pay or player freedom by offering a team friendly extension. I am a John Brown fan but I agree with the take from the spotrac founder in that thread............pay cuts don't endear the player to the team. Better off cutting them and letting them test the market. Beane cut Incognito's pay.........the guard market heats up a couple weeks later in UFA.........Incognito loses his mind and Bills ended up with a hole at guard. Beane cuts Lotulelei's pay.........guarantees his money in return with a rather obvious plan to cut bait after 2020 season........so Star opts out and the plan blows up in Beane's face.
  17. 1 - Again with your daddy issues 😂 2 - He does strike me as a likely simp, in fairness his current partner is a massive upgrade in every superficial regard on the one that he had that cheated on him with Golden Taint. She has that for leverage.
  18. Technically he was still in the bathroom pretending to have the sh*ts after texting McDermott to let him know that he'd have to trade up ahead of Carolina to get Zay Jones. Yep. Reputable sources.
  19. There is nothing desperate about it.........he's a good enough NFL OC and paid top dollar so staying an OC is still a profitable option. His fit with Josh has been great and I am very pleased that taking the risk in exposing Allen to a complex offense has really put him in a position where he has now moved ahead of a fast starter like Lamar Jackson in the QB pecking order. It was a risk but I believe in taking risks and trying to be the best. I just don't believe that Daboll is a generational talent as an OC. He has holes in his game that he needs to figure out just to be consistently excellent in that job. He's a local guy and I hope he takes his game to yet another level this year..........but this was only the first time in 6 years as an NFL OC that he's had a good offense......and teams already showed they adapted to it in the playoffs.......so it's not a given that he will be as good or better this season. For all I know he could be a great HC...........it's an entirely different skillset than being a coordinator...........but most of the data teams have to work with to evaluate him is as an OC and he's had more downs than ups in that job. That's not a good look in this HC hiring environment.
  20. Yes there is a perception in the media that the % of black HC's should mirror the % of black players in the NFL and that anything less than that is a sure sign of systemic racism. I entirely disagree with the concept because players earn spots thru physical competition while coaches are "chosen" rather arbitrarily by some measure of intellect........which would be racist in itself to say therefore disqualifies any person who isn't black. If that % of NFL players mattered Mike Tomlin and Sean McDermott wouldn't be in the NFL they'd just be William and Mary alumnus probably working in finance or something. But the reality is that there is racism involved.........and there would be regardless of who the majority race of ownership was............and teams know there are bridges too far now when dealing with the public with regard to hirings. Oft-fired, middle aged white coaches with no history of success as a HC on any level are toxic candidates right now. That's not to say some team wouldn't hire Daboll..........it only takes one........but look at the hirings that just took place. The way to skirt discomfort with black candidates without mass criticism is to hire a young guy and say he's the next McVay..........an inspired young genius with a clean record. And teams are willing to go that route because at their core I believe most owners think there are an absolute TON of candidates for any HC job that could do the job well if given the resources.......so they will hire the person they feel they can relate and communicate the best with. They really don't think they are passing on better candidates.
  21. You lost me here. After Mahomes you can slot Watson anywhere in the top 5.........but obviously not outside of it. His trade value is second only to Mahomes(Josh might be of equal value to Watson but Watson has a more proven track record).........which is really the biggest problem.......nobody who has anything of commensurate value to offer that is in the market to do so.
  22. The reduced cap has given them a convenient excuse to kick a long term extension down the road a year. They will pick up the 5th year option this offseason.
  23. They were also a bad offense in 2019. The similarities I see with Mularkey and Wyche were that they also had years where they were successful running the ball or passing the ball. Mularkey almost got the Bills to the playoffs in his first season as HC with a power running game. The following season was an atrocity of bad QB's being asked to throw and throw. Ultimately it's just coaching inconsistency. Teams would catch up to what they were doing and they would be painfully slow to adapt. For all the good that was accomplished offensively in 2020, I thought "Mr. I'm in the championship game every year" Daboll showed a lack of awareness down the stretch.........taking low hanging fruit instead of prepping his team for postseason football..........and his offense then looked plain BAD in the playoffs. Josh Allen running around for big plays or little else worked. Daboll wants to sell himself as a key part of New England's success..........but he needs to show he can adapt offensively the way Belichick and his OC's have. Lotta' tape out there now and KC was hardly the '85 Bears and shut them down so he's going to have to adapt and improve in a number of areas in 2021.
  24. They were none too excited about their Browns interviewing Daboll last year. Are you expecting more St. Francis high school grads to get GM jobs? I thought the Polian mafia was thinning out. RICO laws and such.......
  25. Ok yeah he's a great coordinator...........moving on......name me one NFL HC ever that had been previously fired from 3 NFL coordinator gigs. It's one thing for a club to hire a young guy like Nick Siriani and defend his whiteness.........it's another to pass on an Eric Bienemy to hire a white guy who has been canned from a lower job 3 times. Being a HC is not like being a QB........there are plenty of capable people to fill the jobs..........and yes, if Daboll wants to overcome his past and help sell himself to not only the ownership but also the fanbase and local media of a market as a new HC........yeah I think showing growth in his current job would be his best shot.
