I think if Morse leaves then Bates finally gets the gig he was groomed for. Based on how he played at LG...........I think we will be pleased with him at C. Morse $7.5M cap saving aligns perfectly with the PFF projection for Andrew Norwell........3 year @ $7.5M aav.
-
It's a decent draft for mean OL and there are plenty of fast, quality receiving prospects........which IMO aligns nicely with their long term needs........protect and serve Josh Allen and do it in ways that will save the team cap room in the long term. Defensively, they probably should plan on spending some money and becoming more adaptable to different opponents.

The past record in one score games is likely rather inconsequential to a DT. As is the ManningCast superstition nonsense. Neither changes how they have to do their job. I am somewhat familiar with this concept having been involved in industries over the years where things often get extremely over-analyzed by outsiders and they find it surprising when I don't pay any attention at all to noise and irrelevant information.

You'd think GB would try to keep him.........but if Rodgers leaves(likely if only due to salary cap) Campbell might want to go where there is an established QB. Depends how much he wants to win. I think it should be abundantly clear by now that Edmunds has too much physical talent to just let him get worked over like a dope against good QB's by having him play center field in this defense. It was one thing when he was cheap.........now the $13M guaranteed cap hit comes. They need plays made for that money and they aren't going to get them from him as currently aligned.

I have this argument with people like you every offseason........those who are obsessed with using high picks on low dollar positions. I am an actual college football fan.........not just someone who tunes in to see a player who might fit with the Bills........I've seen PLENTY of him in his 4 years at Georgia. He's a nice player but a rotational guy who doesn't impact the passing game.........he HAS NOT been a dynamic player in any of his 4 years at Georgia. But he'd be a good value in round 3 where addressing both sides of the running game starts to make sense...........and where he would still have ample motivation to get-and-stay in shape and get better at his game because he wouldn't be as likely to get fat and happy with a $7M signing bonus like pick #25 might. If you want him.........wait a few years..........and maybe pick him up on waivers just like the Bills did with 340 pound former Dolphins second rounder Jordan Phillips. Get him right before his contract is expiring and then reap the benefits of him playing for a big pay day. Even the great Ted Washington was initially a bust in SF as a first round pick. Keeping fat guys on point at a hustle position like DT ain't easy.

My thoughts exactly. Projected to get around $10M per year by PFF.......which is steep for a guy who is still more potential than performance though......but he IS likely to actually make it to free agency because of the Panthers other big investments in CB. Sneaky cost-efficient "one player" makeover for the D might be Packers LB DeVondre Campbell. Projected to get 2 years @ $6.5M per...........he could succeed Edmunds at MLB.........put Edmunds outside where hopefully he could just do more running and hitting..........and play more 3 LB sets. Addresses both susceptibility to the run and QB containment issues. With so many experienced players in the unit it is time that the defense started to morph into something more multiple.

It's free with Disney+. As is Hulu. So any fan of pop culture(Marvel, Star Wars, Disney animation) or practically anyone with kids, a tv and a job probably pays for ESPN insider (or steals it). So while I would never pay for it exclusively........show me someone who doesn't have it and I'll show you someone still using a dial up modem who has only ketchup and Coors Light in their fridge.

1) Football........still needs to develop his touch and accuracy on throws for the long term.......there is room to learn how to identify defense's quicker etc.. 2) Brand building 3) You don't buy a pistachio crop, you buy and plant trees and watch them grow for 5-8 years before they make pistachios. Hopefully Allen will have 4-7 SB rings and a new stadium before the co-op has to come in and harvest those pistachios.

If they don't take the ball out of Josh Allen's hands on several mid-game drives they win the game too. Roster-wise the Bills have more overall talent..........but less explosive weapons around their QB........which has ultimately decided both of their playoff matchups. I also think the Chiefs really know who they are as a team..........they are offense driven and don't lean on their defense in games against teams that can put up points..........McDermott still over-trusts his defense at times.
-
Chiefs lost Mathieu. Their secondary got beat up and was really depleted late. So I wouldn't say that I'd trade those benefits for Tre White being back.........Allen really exploited those. The Chiefs also missed 2 easy kicks in the first half. Bills were fortunate to get back in it late.........we shouldn't pretend like they had the game in the bag for 59:47..........there was a good deal of luck in the rope-a-dope approach on defense nearly getting them out of Arrowhead with a W. I would have gladly stole a SB from them this year and relished it but they were still the slightly better team..........their playmakers had massive impact for Mahomes both on the stat sheet and how they affected the Bills D plan just by their presence on the field.

Two of the fastest........Jameson Williams and John Metchie..........tore ACL's in the Alabama postseason. They are expected to make full recoveries.........but after the injuries they both might be available at #25 when the Bills pick. The question mark is how much they could contribute next season coming off those injuries...........it's a long season so if you can get one back at full speed in November you still could have 8-9 games left to utilize them. Complicated decision. Then there are a number of others who are likely late first-early 2nd rounders who aren't injured but probably not quite explosive. In general it's a very good WR class again but the players with special speed as well as other early round skills will likely be gone at some point in round 2.
-
No......Eh.......I watched him plenty and in particular he got worn down FAST in the first matchup with Alabama..........more snaps was only going to lead to diminishing returns statistically. Now if he were a natural pass rushing prospect in addition to being a fat load..........then I would consider risking giving a very overweight player at a position with a very high bust rate a $7M signing bonus..........but he's not that kind of player.

Your 1 tech isn't a nose tackle........he still needs to be able to make plays...........Davis doesn't do that. His 2021 production was pretty anemic actually. 14 games 32 tackles 5 TFL and 2 sacks Harrison Phillips senior year line at Stanford: 14 games 98 tackles 17 TFL and 7.5 sacks Phillips is a true 1 tech who is coming into his own now............they need a backup to him but they don't need to use a first round pick there. Support the QB.........Allen can't endure the kind of beating he took running the ball that much year after year...........he needs playmakers and blocking and those take HUGE precedence over a filling a run defense role.
-
I don't think the Pegula's are in any position to lean on McDermott.........I get disappointed with some of the things McD does...........but he'd be A LOT harder to replace than Frank Reich would be in Indy. They are built on McD's foundation for better or worse. The talent aside from Allen isn't good enough to sustain a seismic coaching change. And I do like the fact that he is always willing to make adjusments to his game.

They were a bad YAC team last year as well so it had nothing to do with defensive adjustments. Go back and watch tape of last year..........the receivers took a horrible beating from all the short passes in front of defenders who then came up fast to hit them because they weren't afraid of the receiver evading their grasp and making a play. You could put a WWF highlight reel together from all the body slams Beasley and Diggs took in 2020. Teams can't run easily on the Bills defense. They have a very solid run defense. The only bad day the Bills had against the run was Indy..........who had the highest draft pedigreed OL in NFL history and the league's best RB..........they got a lead and the Bills played terrible that day. They would have lost to a lot of teams that day. What killed them in TN was play action passing..........which works well regardless of whether you can run it consistently or not if it's well executed. And it was. Great performance for the Titans and still the Bills should have won that game outright. Bad blocks by an ailing LT and a soon benched LG snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. At home against NE it was their inability to make plays for Josh Allen...........that game and the Jax game were opposite ends of the spectrum of performance from Allen..........but both days where they needed a playmaker and couldn't find a single one. All respect to Diggs........great at getting open.........bad at YAC. And after him the playmaking ability after the catch falls off significantly among their starting 4 of Diggs/Beas/Sanders/Davis. Davis is a tremendous #3 option..........they need a 1B who can fill that chasm between Diggs short routes and Davis deep routes with explosiveness.

That was Daboll doing his Mike Mularkey/Sam Wyche routine. He mostly got away from that propensity for "gotcha'" plays that don't make sense late in the year and the strung out run plays that can't work against a fast flowing defense. But he gave away 2 drives with those decisions to take the ball out of Allen's hands. Whether it was designed to go to him or not........there is no way that Gilliam should ever be running that route.

Isaiah McKenzie aka, Lil Dirty, sounds like he’s moving on

My thoughts were that the better team won. They aren't better by a lot..........but just enough to make the Bills the second best team in the NFL. Most of us watched the Chiefs do this exact same type of thing to the Chargers in LA a month or so ago..........eventually chasing all those jack rabbits around tires out any defense and when an NFL defense is that tired they can't stop ANYTHING. 13 seconds and 3 TO's was like having a minute left. Maybe you squib there but that's the same ST unit that just gave up a long return to Hill. They just needed KC to make one mistake at the end and they did not oblige. We talked about this last offseason..........the Bills needed to add more speed on offense and notably improve the finishing ability of the pass rush..........they didn't actually accomplish either. Instead they improved against the Chiefs this season because Allen got MUCH better over the course of this season and the OL gelled. -
The Patriots and Titans didn't have great days running the ball against Buffalo..........they each had one single big run play that made a big difference but were otherwise stoned by the Bills defense in the run game. Specifically that Patriots game at home........what the Bills needed was someone on offense who could take a short pass and make it into a big play. There are going to be days like that when Allen isn't as sharp or when the weather conditions dictate a short passing game..........the Bills do not have the personnel in the passing game to pick up the slack on those days. They are a station-to-station passing offense. No RAC. That's why a journeyman type in McKenzie with some RAC ability looked dynamic at times. It's the personnel.

I would expect Braxton Berrios to be on their radar. Two birds (slot playmaker and great returner).........one stone. Jets might be willing to let him go because they have a great talent in slot in Elijah Moore. -
Yeah 5 years $50M for a 45% snap guy who made no plays but would "magically" make the defense much better was a big enough mistake. The only time he played anywhere close to what he was getting paid was the brief point early in this season where he was fit and healthy and could rush the passer. So they got like 2 good games for over $40M expended. They need to be able to find a serviceable 1 tech cheap to back up Phillips.........who they really need to re-sign.
-
So you want to use a 1st round pick on a run defender at a position of high bust rate that gives you 40%-45% of the snaps? Try to remember that job #1 in the NFL is to support your QB...........other than actually getting Josh Allen.........4 of the other 5 #1 picks have been expended on defense. Last I checked the Chiefs finished with a better record than Buffalo and had a bad run defense and are about to advance to their 3rd straight Super Bowl...........so a #1 overall ranked defense like the Bills should probably be enough to "beat other teams". The Bills are not gifted on offense..........Josh Allen has put a lot of hard miles on his body to make it look that way............it's time to change that. The story of this season isn't not being able to stop the run...........it can be summed up by scoring only 9 points in a game in Jacksonville..........on a day when your QB desperately needed a playmaker to pick him up........there weren't any to be found.

Honestly what do you do moving forward?
BADOLBILZ replied to Milanos Milano's topic in The Stadium Wall
Yeah I by no means think they are set at CB..........but given the cap limitations and limited amount of premium picks I put it down far enough on the list that I don't think it can get addressed with any of their premium chips in the draft or FA. There are usually some pretty good athletes at CB in the later rounds..........that's probably their best option there IMO. Dane Jackson has been pretty good........they need to find a more gifted version to add to the mix. Maybe Nick McCloud makes a jump next year too. Nice speed tools there. -

In fairness...........Tre White couldn't matchup to KC last year in the AFCCG either. Hill ran circles around him when it mattered. I don't think CB is a big priority but they need to keep finding some later in the draft and hopefully find their own JC Jackson. To me.........despite the OL improving late in the season..........it's still about making the supporting cast around Allen better so that he doesn't have to be a battering ram to sustain drives to make it look like they are an explosive offense. They are not. They are currently a station-to-station offense with an explosive QB. Defensively, they need to get a finishing pass rusher..........like Khalil Mack as some have mentioned already..........and find an instinctive and cost effective long term replacement for Tremaine Edmunds in the middle. I couldn't help but wonder what those Mahomes scrambles would have looked like if a then seasoned edge playing Edmunds would have been out there chasing Mahomes around rather than the old men and rookies they had at DE yesterday. That ship has likely sailed. It's time for some people to admit that he's just not ever going to be worth $15M-$20M per year as a MLB........and that being the case it's time to turn the page before he goes from a disappointingly modest positive on D to a big liability on the cap ledger. -

BADOLBILZ replied to Milanos Milano's topic in The Stadium Wall
Yep. The biggest difference between the Chiefs and Bills is that Mahomes can dump the ball down to Kelce and it can become a 30 yard play and he can dump it to Hill and it can become a 50-60 yard play. Nobody on the Bills can do either.........they are a station-to-station passing attack. All the people talking about improving the defense..........how is the Chiefs defense any better than the Bills? It ain't. The difference between the two teams is playmaking ability in the passing game on offense. I can't believe I can finally say this..........but Allen is the better QB than Mahomes...........but the Bills offense needs to get to the point where they don't need Allen smashing into defenses to sustain drives............running should still be part of his game but they need A LOT more RAC from their receiving corps. A LOT.
