Harvard Scholar Arrested for Being Black

Recommended Posts

The Cambridge police department pretty much acknowledges that Whalen never told Crowley anything about two black guys. They are now saying that the police report was a compilation of stories.

Yeah, right. If something is a compilation of stories you don't attribute a direct quote to a specific person. IMO, they are just covering their ass because they know that Crowley screwed up on the report and it makes him look bad, which it does.

Agree. Which leads us back full circle after 26 pages to:

What a stupid thing to do arresting Gates. It is stupid becasue now the police are bagged covering their ass and making sh*t up.

I've contended from the start that Gates was stupid and an arrogant prick, AND the cop was stupid and an arrogant prick, and that Gates never should have been arrested.

I do find it funny that I have heard countless people say "If you mouth off to a cop you deserve to be arrested" as if that justifies the baseless arrests. They are not supposed to arrest people for yelling at them. Granted, it's a whole box fulla stupid to yell at them, and you should just shut the !@#$ up and be cordial to them, and they deserve your respect, but that doesn't mean they SHOULD go on power trips if you don't.

That is really all I am saying too. I don't understand how people can just blindly follow what the cop is doing... There are so many variables and so many different type of personalities among officers.

I think what some of you may be missing is that...As an officer of the law, your life is in danger on almost every call. Think about it. You are called to this guys house after a 911 call of a B&E. You confront the suspect and he acts beligerantly...you have no idea what he's gonna do next. Of course you are going to put him in cuffs to protect yourself and your partners. Now after you have him cuffs...who knows...You can let him go if he calms down and proves it's his house but if he keeps acting like a d*&khead....By all means teach him a little humility. I believe this is a case of arrogance vice racism. Just my 2 cents.

I am not one for guilty by association... You guys on the right are more up with that. With this case of guilty by association I have to agree with you guys.

bull sh--. There's no difference between partisan political ideologists when it comes to that topic. Why is it you people can't face these realities? Like it's not all over this thread.

I usually take the cops' side because they have a really tough job. In particular the paperwork part of the job is a pain in the ass ... but clearly it's quite important. Now everyone knows why and I bet that many cops will start to take more care with their paperwork.

In any event - out of this may come something good. We shall see.

I agree with everything except "If you mouth off to a copy you deserve to be arrested"... especially because it was in his own home. Somehow this is what people are missing, mouthing off to a cop, which is dubious, the Professor seems to have just been arrogant, not abusive, is not and should not be an arrestable offense and I am tired of hard headed police officers who think it is. We are a system of laws and they are part of the enforcement... to me arresting a man in his own home for nothing is a violation of the American Constitution. We have the freedom of speech in this country and this officer is just asking for a lawsuit...just what is needed right now in our history, more racial tension... Then throw in the after affects of racial tension LWB and the whole thing is a mess.

Everything else you said I agree with.

This is a nice little story that adds to the dialogue about the incident.

Officer Barrett was just on Larry King and gave an amazing performance. In case you missed it he's not racist. He's sorry if anyone misinterpreted "banana eating jungle bunny" as racist. He has no idea where he came up with "banana eating jungle bunny" because the email was the first and only time he's ever used the slur. He also doesn't know the definition of editorial, bias, or possibly both. And CNN had a "banana eating jungle bunny" graphic on the screen for the entire interview. Riveting!

I said the same thing you did, that I didn't agree that this practice is okay.

"It is incumbent upon Sergeant Crowley and me to utilize the great opportunity that fate has given us to foster greater sympathy among the American public for the daily perils of policing on the one hand, and for the genuine fears of racial profiling on the other hand," Gates said in a statement on his Web site, The Root.

"Let me say that I thank God that (I) live in a country in which police officers put their lives at risk to protect us every day, and, more than ever, I've come to understand and appreciate their daily sacrifices on our behalf. I'm also grateful that we live in a country where freedom of speech is a sacrosanct value and I hope that one day we can get to know each other better, as we began to do at the White House this afternoon over beers with President Obama," he said. iReport.com: Police, public share views on racial profiling

"At this point, I am hopeful that we can all move on, and that this experience will prove an occasion for education, not recrimination. I know that Sergeant Crowley shares this goal. Both of us are eager to go back to work tomorrow."

What he should have said is

" I apologize to Officer Crowley and the woman who called 911. I acted like a giant douchebag. My neighbor was looking out for my house and officer Crowley was doing his job. I also am sorry that the President had to open his big mouth,"

Don't forget that most of the same guys are arguing that he deserved to be arrested on his own property for his speech.

Let us not forget AFTER Crowley ID'd Gates and knew that he was the person who lived there. Did I say AFTER loud enough. Man I don't want to step out of line in my own castle... Ya really.

:devil::devil:
