Lenny Dykstra

Dykstra has now declared bankruptcy.

The post by someone asking for stock tips reminded me to post the story of Lenny Dykstra. Anyone who watches Real Sports on HBO has seen the profiles of Lenny when he was riding high & the latest one where he's living in a house sans wife & furniture. Lenny was once the darling of Cramer & his people, now he's just another guy who gambled & lost.

How is it exactly that people came to consider a somewhat unhinged, party animal baseball player to be a financial expert?

:)

I loved Nails as a player and still hate the kitty Mets front office for trading him (few phrases will incite more venom from a Mets fan than "Juan Samuel") and the rest of the wild bunch from the 80s, but seriously, people gave this guy money to manage?

Many years ago, my father was in a casino in Atlantic City. He walked into a room (either a poker or high-roller room) and noticed a guy who was obviously drunk, yelling, swearing and abusing the waitress and female dealer. My dad decided he couldn't play in that room.

When he asked the pit boss who the guy was, he was told it was Lenny, and that this was his "normal" (or "regular") behavior. When my dad asked why they let him continue to act like that, and play, he was told he was good for $10,000 (or was it more?) losses every day he played.

This guy was a prick on, and off, the field.

I actually just left an employer similar to Lenny's ways. I wasn't duped out of any money, but I've seen other employees duped out of paychecks and for the past year we'd been getting automated credit-debt consolidator calls. When I gave the owner my resignation, he said these words I'll never forget: "This is war".

After I talked to an attorney just for some information and he told me that usual someone who does shady business practice in one area, generally does shady business practices across the board.

Dude, you worked for Bugs Bunny?

That's awesome!

Seriously, though, working for a sleazy douche can be horrible while you work for one, and afterward. I was never threatened like that by a boss (or former boss) but once was threatened by a client of a company I worked for. My response to the threat was "Who do you think has more to lose here, you or me? I am unmarried, no children, don't own a home and have the minimum of personal possessions. I don't think I'm the guy you want to get into it with."

Yeah, my same exact thoughts, I'm about to turn 25 and my former boss was 50. Although when he told me this is war, I just said "Sorry, I don't see it that way". And I called the higher-ups to make them aware of the statement so they could document it.

We could play a drinking game for every time Dykstra says "The bottom line is"

And an acquaintance who covered him with the Mets says, "Dykstra is dumb as dirt. Who, seriously, would take financial advice from a guy whose vocab consisted of various versions of "dude" and who thought he had the upper hand in car vs. tree?"

Bottom line, that video is awesome (if long). What do you suppose Lenny is on?

My guess would be prescription pain killers. How about you?

I can't argue with that, but it seems a little bit different than those I know with that problem. Of course, not everyone reacts the same way. Maybe it is a combo of that and a brain tumor, or something.

I read the ESPN article when it came out and thought to myself, "the crap's gonna hit the fan with Lenny".

Sure enough, it seems to have started.

How in the world could anyone take advice from Lenny Freakin' Dykstra? I remember watching him as a Met and how he played with such abandon. He was actually my favorite Mets player, because he was no bigger than I was. But, if you ever listened to him in interviews (even then), it was obvious he had a five-cent head.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was on heavier stuff than pain killers. That ESPN article quoted former employees of his saying he'd be up for 60 hours straight sometimes.

Provigil can impact some that way, and people are using it to get more done in less time, focus, etc. His possible steroid/HGH use during his baseball career might play a role, too.
