Mister Defense Posted February 22, 2009 Share Posted February 22, 2009 I think Losman may stay in Buffalo for 2 reasons: 1st, JP Losman isn't in demand. He did not look like a starting quarterback when he played this year, so there isn't a lot of interest (maybe none?) by teams looking for a starting quarterback. The reason he wants out of Buffalo is because he wants to be a starting quarterback. If that isn't likely, his best option to continue to play in the league, and improve, may be Buffalo. He is comfortable on the team and respected by his teammates and the community. What would he face in another city? A backup position and starting all over again? Cut in training camp? 2nd, the Bills don't seem to have many good options for the backup quarterback position. They don't want to overpay and they will merely, and almost assuredly, get a mediocre backup quality quarterback, as they pay more than they would have for Losman. It seems best for both parties that JP Losman stays here, as it makes both the player and the team more stable . The inept front office of the last few years would likely be interested in a player like Losman... we all know how that works out. Bring in a mediocre (at best) free agent, that you can get cheap, because nobody else is interested, and hope that you end up getting a bargain. Has it worked once in the last 10 years? I can't think of any, except, possibly Doug Flutie. What would JP add to this team next season? He would fill a roster spot. Didn't his performance this season seal any doubts that he might be a player? JP's best hope of salvaging his career (if it is still possible) is to start fresh somewhere else. The Bills need to move on as well. It wouldn't be the best for both parties. The Bills are committed to Trent Edwards, for better or worse, and having the jilted girlfriend standing on the sidelines (or sitting on the bench staring vacantly off in the distance) isn't going to help Edwards. As was evident from JP's appearences last season, if he should get a chance to start again, he won't help the Bills either. The Bills need to get better, smarter and more confident at this position. There would be no upside (other than that some fans still like him) to bringing him back. There is zero chance that this happens, IMO. Somebody will sign Losman. He has about 40 starts under his belt. Let someone else experiment with him. Let some other fan base pin their hopes on him... it goes without saying, but JP is a great kid, but he just hasn't shown near enough, at this point, to think he is ever going to be a legit NFL starter. I really hope things work out for him somewhere.... but I have serious doubts. For the institutionalized joke that Rob Johnson has become amongst Bills followers, JP isn't nearly as good as he was... We need a decent verteran who is a real back up and not some talented but underachieving mess of a QB. JP can't make the right decisions and he is not accurate with the ball .. this is why he will not be playing football in the NFL very much longer.
