Big Turk Posted September 28 Posted September 28 (edited) Apparently we have seen the first way teams are now trying to get a real advantage by kicking the ball into the landing zone... Rams kicker has perfected what is similar to a knuckleball in baseball, where it has no spin and dips and swerves wildly, except with a football and it's oblong shape, the movement is more pronounced. This "knucklekick", effectively is designed to either cause the ball to dip and hit the ground in the landing zone before getting to a returner and then bounce strangely which forces a scramble to try and pick up the ball before actually returning it, or causes the returners to bobble and drop the ball frequently when it takes last second dips on them... Something to really look for around the league now as the Rams seem to be leading the charge with this and it's been highly effective...they have 6 kickoffs already where they have tackled the returner inside the 20 as a direct result of this tactic. H2o Posted September 28 Posted September 28 There was always going to be some kind of adjustment. Handing the ball to teams at the 35 yard line makes that happen. I hope Prater/Bass/whoever start working on this here. Quote
NewEra Posted September 28 Posted September 28 Average start on kickoffs the last 2 seasons: 29.5 yard line. Too many starts at the 40+ to my eye. One pass from fg range with today’s kickers. Not a fan. Drive should average between the 20-25 imo. 2 Quote

wjag Posted September 28 Posted September 28 There is a risk reward to this strategy for sure. But watching Philly bungle kick after kick certainly makes you go, huh. Quote
nuklz2594 Posted September 28 Posted September 28 Absolutely hate new kick off rule. Will be flag football within 3 years 1 1 2 Quote

Make the kickoff relevant again instead of an extended bathroom break or time to be scrolling thru your phone while the kickoff goes out of the endzone. 3 3 Quote

Watching the embedded video that explains the rule is comical. So convoluted and unnecessary. And don't even get me started on how the onsides kick has been completely destroyed. Quote
Walking Tall Posted September 28 Posted September 28 (edited) I wish they'd just go back to the old kickoff rules. College does it. High school does it. Just think. The Bills comeback game might not have happened. We recovered an onside surprise after our first TD. The Saints recovered a surprise onside kick to open the second half of a Super Bowl which they won. SOMETIMES things don’t need to be changed. Edited September 28 by Walking Tall Quote

Guys like Tyler Murray, even Mahoney would've been crushed and not drafted for their own safety 1 Quote
jlgarsh Posted September 28 Posted September 28 I’m fine keeping the weird kickoff rule but they should go back to the original onside kick rules where teams could stack one side of the field to actually have a legit chance of recovery. 1 Quote
Pecker Posted September 28 Posted September 28 Any soccer players know how you kick these knuckleballs? Is it a common thing in soccer? Or is this rams kicker some magician with a super talent Quote

BringBackFergy Posted September 28 Posted September 28 Is it a knuckle or a counter-clockwise swirl? Quote
