Special K Posted July 22 Posted July 22 I won't go into great detail about each matchup, but I find it interesting that each of the 4 battles feature a veteran vs. a rookie or 2nd year player: CB2: Tre White/Max Hairston CB4: Dane Jackson/Dorian Strong S/Nickel/Utility Player: Cam Lewis/Jordan Hancock FS: Cole Bishop/Damar Hamlin or Forrest What do you think will win out....youth or experience? I think the younger player has the inside track to win all of these battles, with the closest battles being CB2 and "Utility" Player(Dime S/Backup Nickel). What do you think?? 4 1 Quote
RoscoeParrish Posted July 23 Posted July 23 I see CB2 as Hairston’s to lose. If he doesn’t win it and hang onto it immediately, I will start get Elam flashbacks. the battle for CB4 is between Dane and Tre. I think Tre may win that by virtue of still hoping he has some old form left in the tank. Cam Lewis’ ability to play ST and multiple positions probably saves his roster spot again this year. Hamlin will somehow win the starting FS spot. Bishop will be competing with Rapp for SS and some big nickel packages. 1 Quote
Lagoon Blues Posted July 23 Posted July 23 (edited) You would have to think Dane has the upper hand for the last spot, but I would love nothing more than Strong forcing the issue and grabbing the reins. Edited July 23 by Lagoon Blues 1 Quote
DCofNC Posted July 23 Posted July 23 I’m hoping we throw on of the youngest secondaries in the league on the field. There was a huge lack of talent last year and they have enough guys to replace all of those incumbents. I doubt they will bc McD is afraid to lose, not playing to win, so I expect more of the same. 1 Quote

I expect Benford, Hairston and Tre to be the top 3 outside CB's, with Jackson and Strong fighting for that final CB spot. 1 Quote
frostbitmic Posted July 23 Posted July 23 CB2: Tre White/Max Hairston ... This is Hairston's job to lose. Does Tre' have anything left in the tank ? CB4: Dane Jackson/Dorian Strong ... Both could make the team, Ingram will give both a battle, don't be surprised if he makes it. S/Nickel/Utility Player: Cam Lewis/Jordan Hancock - They'll find a way to keep both if Lewis wins the battle. FS: Cole Bishop/Damar Hamlin or Forrest - You know they love some Hamlin. Quote

Bishop predominantly with the first team today is a good sign. Read a report somewhere that they really want it to be Bishop and Rapp because of the fact that they are so similar and interchangeable, it will help a lot in disguising coverages. Honestly, I think Bishop is going to take a big step forward this year, and him starting camp with the 1's is great news. 1 Quote
Victory Formation Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Money will factor in for depth players.. For that reason I think that players like Strong and Hancock may have an edge over some of the older and more expensive backups.. Quote
WeckMonster Posted July 24 Posted July 24 (edited) What’s the outlook for Hardy? Was surprised he didn’t make the 53 after a strong camp last year. He’s small but has speed and was great covering the slot in college. might just be a bad scheme fit with McDermott basically wanting big slow DBs who come up and make sure tackles after giving up an easy 9 on 3rd and 7. hopefully drafting Hairston means he evolves from his 1996 cover 3 shell. I'm Spartacus Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I'm echoing most posters here who love the Demar Hamlin story, but we need more talent and youth in the defensive backfield. Let's get the younger and more talented guys in there. 1 Quote

I mean... hell yes... who doesnt respect the hell out of 3... happy to see him make it all the way back... but we really need to upgrade there... I am fine if he is veteran depth, leadership etc... but we have got to be better... If Cole Bishop cant win that spot, I feel like the pick is questionable at this point... not a bust but I am leaning more toward Elam and that pick than he is going to be the next Hyde or Poyer at S Edited July 24 by JP51 Quote
Special K Posted July 26 Author Posted July 26 After the first three days of practice: It seems the second Safety battle isn't much of a battle as Cole Bishop has played with the 1's each day.....good sign. Cam Lewis had a good day today, and it seems the coaches are planning on bringing Hancock along slowly....both will make the team, but Lewis seems to be the front runner in that battle. Haven't heard a lot about Jackson or Strong so far....has anyone going to the practices have any observations to share?? It looks like the Tre/Hairston battle is going to be the most intriguing battle of camp....it sounds like Tre is really going to make the rookie earn it!! 1 Quote
26TrapDraw Posted July 26 Posted July 26 I think that Tre white will start season as CB2 across from Benford and max Hairston may win the job down the line but Tre white seems ready determined and healthy and it would benefit the Defense for him to play at the pre Achilles injury level. He seems dialed in and I think he loves being back. I think he’s going to surprise some people 1 1 Quote
Virgil Posted July 26 Posted July 26 This might be the most depth at DB I can remember this team ever having, and that’s remembering the Winfield Clements days. Anyone who doesn’t make this team will be snatched up quickly. Out backups could start for the Dolphins. It’s going to be tough to stash anyone on the practice squad. To me, it’s Benford Hairston Johnson White Lewis Strong or Ingram (other on PS) S Bishop Rapp Hamlim If 4, Forrest, but I could see Cam allowing them to run with 3. Out depth on the DLine and LB is going to make the active roster decisions a weekly debate, barring injuries. It’s crazy how deep we got this offseason. 1 Quote

Virgil Posted July 26 Posted July 26 (edited) 13 minutes ago, Victory Formation said: Hancock? I could see that argument too. Someone with potential is going to be cut. Typically I’d say they’ll go younger for the cheaper salary, but most of these guys are both young and cheap, so who knows 🤷🏻♂️. I think guys like Ingram and Lewis are key, as they can play multiple positions and allows them to carry more depth at other positions. I don’t think I saw Tre coming back as strong as he’s shown so far. Because I really didn’t think he was going to make the team when we signed him. I still could see him being the odd man out with his salary. While not much, Benford is #1 and we drafted Hairston in the first. Is Tre worth that much on the bench when you have other young guys cheaper you want to develop? I love Tre, but it won’t shock me if he’s cut. Edited July 26 by Virgil Quote

Looked solid. Strong I think was with the 4s might have rotated in with 3s. Didn’t see him out much in 11 on 11. He rotated in with the gunners on special teams. 1 Quote
Pecker Posted July 26 Posted July 26 This is McDermott we are talking about. When was the last time a rookie got a big role? he will go with experience a thousand times out of a hundred. if white can run he will start I’m curious to know where and how the late round DBs are playing. There was talk of one or both playing safety? The other being a nickle?? where are they getting reps? Quote
stlbills13 Posted July 26 Posted July 26 They can sneak Dane on the practice squad. Assuming he'll accept that role, they gotta go with that approach. Quote
