“They Sure Were Exciting” the story of the 1975 Buffalo Bills

Fresh off our 1st playoff game 8 years, our now complete Offense led the League in multiple categories. But Dr. Jekyll’s Defense was another story. We had a winning season, flirting with the playoffs again but still couldn’t beat Miami. We never did in the decade. Ferguson, JD Hill & yes, Bobby Chandler#81 combined with OJ, Braxton and a still very formidable OLine to compile a point a minute offense! But it was matched by the Defense allowing the same. Thrills, chills and broken hearts. That’s still the Bills in a nutshell.

That Miami loss in Miami , was that the game Pat Toomay got into with the Refs? after a horrible call.. ? (cant see the video)

1975 was a great year.

OJ had been running all over the place since his breakout year in 1972.   But in 1973, when OJ rushed for over 2,000 yards, Joe Ferguson threw less than 1,000 yards despite starting every game.  Fergie's job was to hand off the ball.  Our offense was OJ, all day, all the time.  

 

But in 1975, Fergie started coming into his own and led the NFL in TD passes while OJ led in both rushing yards and TDs.

That year, and in particular that loss to Miami that eliminated us from playoff contention, is probably my earliest Bills memory that I can retrieve.

 

It's why I still hate the Dolphins with the heat of a thousand suns to this very day.

If I'm remembering correctly, Tony Greene's injury killed us that year.  Greene was heart and soul of the defense.

That lost to the lowly Giants at home on MNF was the beginning of the end...a 4-0 start, including trouncing the SB champion Steelers on the road, was a mirage.  The defense just gave up too many points for the Bills to contend.  It was OJ's most complete season, but it just wasn't enough.

The Bills 1975 offense is still the greatest Bills scoring offense.   It has to be judged relative to the league scoring average at the time.

That was also the preseason when Robert James tore his knee up.  I was at that game, yikes.  That defense was not good but the offense was great.

I was in the Marines, stationed at Camp Legune NC. I’d been impossible the 1st 4 weeks of the season boasting the Bills non-stop. Well, I suffered terribly the rest of the season as most teams were well represented in the Corp and they showed no mercy! 🤣🤬

Yep. And the ironic thing is the defense played good enough to beat the Giants. The offense laid an egg.
