It's funny I feel like Lucille Ball is the most forgotten about WNY celebrity. Not celebrity itself but celebrity with WNY ties. I think it's probably because once she made it out to New York and Hollywood I don't think she came back too often. I posted about it on the boards but a couple years ago for my Mom's birthday(huge Lucy fan) we went out to Jamestown and hit the Lucille Ball museum and stopped by her childhood home. Was a fun experience 1 Quote
Another Fan Posted August 9 Posted August 9 I watched this this week. Followed Bob Hurley Sr during the 2007-2008 season at St Anthony’s. Even though it’s really not that long ago. His coaching style gave all sorts of nostalgic/old school vibes. He was a tough guy for sure. Even with his legendary credentials I’m not sure how today’s generation could handle him. Part of the reason imo why St Anthony’s had to close among other changes. It’s a different world today from even then. Quote

The Bills standing buffalo, the burgundy Redskins with a spear, the Oilers, the white Pats, the red Falcons, the blue Broncos D, and a display field goal post to hang them on. 1 Quote

Well into the late 90s, and possibly even early 2000s I was paying 25 cents for those in the vending machine at Tops Grant Street. The weekly run when gas and milk was cheaper in the States, and a pocket full of quarters. If I got a 'dud' team, there were plenty of NFL fans at work to toss them to. Chester was a real Green Bay fan, and when I gave him a Packer helmet he was stoked. 😁 * Wacka's posting about the Liberty Hotel and grove in Cheektowaga in the preschool thread got me thinking about the tradition of the company picnic in WNY. For eight years I worked at CPM in Alden, and for at least two or three years there was a company picnic at Weimer's Grove in Lancaster, at Broadway and Bowen Rd. Before the end of the 80s, that land was sold, and developed into housing. As a kid, I think my parents schlepped me to just about every volunteer fire company picnic in WNY. 1 Quote

I thought the Green Eagles one looked especially sweet for whatever reason. I feel like these were everywhere back then but I remember them particularly at the bowling alley. I bowled in Saturday morning leagues for quite a few years as a kid in the early 90s and I remember we would always try getting new helmets every week. At one point I think I had almost every team. It seemed like the crappy teams came up much more frequently than the elusive teams. I wonder if they stacked the machines like that on purpose. Man I wish I would have held on to my collection.
