Seriously, does anyone know where the cash money is going? We ain’t paying down any debt. Goes into the general fund like all other taxes.

In some cases I have read that up to 47% of a vehicles cost to manufacture (not including marketing/development costs) can be the price of steel (searc for the article: The Impact of Automotive Steel Prices on Car Manufacturing | SMM) The next highest cost is the labor cost. So, by having that much of a steel tariff with limited US producers raising prices, and the cost of labor in the USA being close to the highest in the world, just WHY would anyone want to open ANY new factories here when you are assured of having the highest costs? When the auto companies work the figures, I'm thinking they will see how they can make some announcements for new factories in the USA to please the administration, but the bottom line may be it makes MORE sense to offshore now than ever. That 15% import tariffs looks REALLY good compared to the high labor costs and 50% tariff on steel/the prices domestic steel makers are charging. So again, with the current tariffs, how is this going to lead to automakers (and honestly ANY industry that uses steel and/or aluminum) building factories here rather than just offshoring even more and paying 15% import tariffs on finished goods? Excellent point for which none of the MAGA heads here has an answer to. The only answer to our labor costs is more robotics, so fewer manufacturing jobs. Edited August 7 by Andy1

The short answer is tariffs simply don’t work. Possibly some very discrete specific markets or products…but broad tariffs …no… 25 minutes ago, Wolfgang said: Legit question…how old are you?

Candidate Trump said we were going to pay down the debt. Also, President Trump has a tendency to exaggerate so I wonder how much we really got and what's in the fine print. Seriously, does anyone know where the cash money is going? Tariff revenue goes to the US Treasury’s general fund. It's not directly earmarked to pay down the debt unless Congress specifically allocates it that way. So far, there’s no clear evidence that new tariff money is being used to reduce the deficit as the deficit continues to grow under Trump and spending does, too. In just the first half of 2025, the government spent $142 billion more than the same period last year. If tariffs were the fix, we’re clearly missing the manual. 3
