Head Coaching Salaries Exploding in NFL lately?

Hard to know exact figures since they don't officially get released, but was listening to the JR Sports Brief show driving home the other night and he was talking about how rumors are swirling that Andy Reid will likely be getting an extension that makes him the highest paid coach in the NFL(and it's well deserved, BTW), and then he started talking about head coaching salaries and how they have exploded over recent years since teams realize they can get competitive advantages and they don't count against the cap.

He said that sources have told him over half of the NFL head coaches now make 15+ million a year and that Sean Payton is the highest paid coach, getting $18-20 million from the Broncos.

Is this really true?  I guess it wouldn't be surprising with the proliferation of the salary cap and how much money the teams are generating that the coaches would be getting paid significantly more as well, but it still was shocking to hear that...

Got me curious if McD is in the richer half or poorer half now.

Other than a franchise QB, which now commands a salary in the $25-$55M range, who impacts a team more than the head coach?  In other words, relative to player salaries, these head coaches salaries are very reasonable.  Those kinds of numbers are obviously in a totally different stratosphere than what your average working joe (or message board participant) makes.

I would have guessed Bill is the highest paid coach given what he has accomplished with the Pats.

Actually Andy Reid is about to become the highest paid coach in the NFL, it was in some article that I read the other day,

Makes sense they had that new T.V. deal not that long ago not to mention those streaming exclusives they've been doing, and the money keeps on going up, plus it's not like they even count against the cap.

That may be so, but this was a few days ago and he isn't currently employed as a HC anywhere so he wasn't talked about.

With this economy, Everyone’s salary is exploding. We have reached a new plateau where making 200k / year is considered lower middle class.  Middle class now is 500k a year and people are still struggling to afford living comfortably.

Is your benchmark a family of 20? These numbers are wildly off base.

Everyone’s salary is NOT exploding. Maybe you meant in NFL.  Many are not getting raises as companies are passing on profits to officers of companies.
