Trading a top ten corner for a number two WR would be massively stupid and should get somebody fired

I don't think you've thought this out.  Top WR's are hard to come by.  Raiders have D Adams/H Renfro and paid $20M for J Meyers.  Tampa has M Evans and C Godwin (and had Gage and Gronk at one time), Chargers have K Allen and M Williams.  That's the type of WR tandem I'm talking about, and they are not cheap.

If McD doesn't think he loses much by replacing Tre with Benford, that $10M could go a long ways to improving the offense.  That could be Mike Evans money right there.

To move this discussion in a different direction, in 2024 the Bills have all their picks, an extra 6th and most likely a 3rd round comp pick. Looking at the last few drafts, it's been tough for 6th and 7th rounders to make the team. Picks have been cut, poached off the practice squad, or last a year or two. From the '23 class Nick Broeker probably isn't making it and Justin Shorter is questionable to make the team, at least he is in a battle for the WR6 spot (and probably keep him because of his draft status).

Trading a surplus player or two for late round picks sounds very appealing, especially since we know Beane likes to move around in the draft and the extra picks could enable him to do that.  But also remember the last two years he gave up a 4th to move up in the 1st round, so a 6th or 7th is not getting the job done. So it really wouldn't be to draft someone that will help a lot, it may be to move up the draft board.

What would be intriguing would be a player and a 6th or 7th for a 4th. I don't know if that deal exists.

I agree that this time of year a lot of fans tend to overvalue some of the perceived depth. I think for the Bills this year the positions where that is true are WR and CB. Legit surplus depth is on DL, but the trade options are limited to Epenesa, Basham and maybe Settle or Ford. They are not dealing Rousseau, Miller, Floyd, D Jones or Oliver. Phillips and Lawson have no trade value. Everyone passed on signing Ford until the Bills signed in June. Beane turned some OL-men into picks but I don't know if that player exists this year. Boettger? No. Edwards? I think they want to keep him. Doyle, VanDemark? Unproven no trade value. Quessenbery? Doubtful trade value but who knows...

Top corners are hard to find. Look how much of a difference Sauce Gardner made for the Jets defense. They were ranked 32nd two years ago!

Your 3 examples went  a combined 26-27 last year Derek Carr, Justin Herbert and Tom Brady at QB. Not exactly the results we’ve come to expect while having no number 2

I'd take Diggs and Davis over K Allen and Williams. Keenan isn't what he was and even at his best was never as good as Diggs and I think Gabe and Mike Williams are much more similar than Bills fans think. They are big guys who are decent at running vertical routes but don't get great separation and don't have particularly great catch %s. Williams had his best year in the NFL last year in terms of catch % and drops, but that isn't typical of who he has been. I get it, he has put up two 1,000 yard seasons, and he is a slightly better version of Gabe but he averages about 950 yards and 5 TDs as a #2. Gabe's first year as a #2 he was at 836 and 7 TDs. They aren't a million miles apart.

I think we have two extra 6ths, we moved down twice in the draft for next year picks. On the basis we have the comp pick for Tremaine I expect the Bills to be sitting with 10 picks in the 2024 draft as of right now.

My point with the Chargers wasn't the actual players but that the WR2 is a $20M guy (same w Raiders, Tampa).  The post I responded to was saying someone should get fired if they moved a corner for a top WR2.  That comment doesn't make sense if you compare the money.

My reply to you had been the possible movement of a corner if our draft cb picks hit, and they are top 15ish.  Then Tre might become available.  I admitted it was an optimistic long shot.

We don't have anything resembling a WR1 if Diggs goes down (much better choices at CB1).  And Davis hasn't really proved himself as WR2 (several CB2s).  The possibility of what amounts to moving Tre for a Chris Godwin/M Evans/T Lockett might be something on Beane's radar.
