Cuts vs Drought

Jairus Byrd was franchise tagged in 2013. (yeah, a lot of that had to do with overall roster strategy, but still) Think about that for a minute.

On second thought, don't bother.

He would be a backup safety on this team.

But it's not like those drought teams were without talent. James Cook dreams of having the start (but not the finish) to his NFL career that CJ Spiller had. Devin Singletary is the poor man's Fred Jackson. Dion Dawkins is good, but not prime Jason Peters good. Prime Stephon Gilmore is prime Tre White good. Hell, even rookie Kiko Alonso (before he broke down) would find plenty of snaps available somewhere on this team.

By the way, amazing how many of these guys I just mentioned had their Bills careers end badly. In retrospect, was it really about those players, or was it about an inept organization frustrating the hell out of these players?

Thank goodness that's all history now.

I think I'd rather have Spikes or  Poz in the middle instead of Edmunds.

People act like we were a college team during the drought lol

Over the 17 years we had periods of having good talent on the team … but no qb

we’ve had guys like Eric wood and incognito on the line … levitre

lynch , Jackson , spiller , shady at RB

Bob woods , Harvin , Goodwin , Stevie j, lee evans at WR

great defensive secondaries

really good defensive lines

What we didn’t have was a quarterback

Because inept managers like Marv, Nix, Whaley and Brandon never put in the effort to either tank to get one or trade picks necessary to get one. Largely because Ralph was cheap, old and completely disinterested in fielding a winning team.

Agreed. Allen (not rookie Allen) on most of the drought rosters and we are making the playoffs many of those years. We rarely had horrible teams - only won less than 6 games only 3 times in those 17 years. Most were simply mediocre teams with no QB or even good teams with no QB.

Thanks for this root cause analysis. Finding a QB was far from the biggest problem.

Agreed most of the drought the issue was less the Bills overall talent and the QB/coach being enough. HAD the Bills actually been 3-13 a lot they probably would've broken the drought earlier as they would've backed into a QB. But only two seasons they really were bad in 2001 after going 3-13 it led to Mike Williams and 2010 when they went 4-12 it was Dareus. 9 of the drought seasons the Bills were between 7-9 and 9-7 which is the absolute worst place to be but they usually would have 1-2 pretty good skill position guys (WR/RB) and enough guys on D to make it stick for a bit. Part of what made the drought the drought was the proverbial "In The Hunt" seasons as they were just close enough to be in the graphic but never good enough to make it.

I have thought it will never happen again as the expanded post season makes me thinks even a really really bad franchise will luck out of it, BUT the Jets are cruising to what looks to be a 12th consecutive season with no post season. Maybe its just an AFC East thing and each team is taking a turn lol
