How to fix the reffing problem in the NFL

I agree.  Which is why I feel like having someone under NFL control as an official eye in the sky could just be as bad.  It would be the same as how we look at how the field refs are every week.  We would all want to know who is in the booth making these review calls.

Yeah, and the more transparency the better. The tv broadcast should have access to the footage the replay official is reviewing in real time since they are supplying the feed. It might not be a perfect solution, but "clear and obvious" errors could get addressed quickly.

Whatever, it just seems that pretty much everyone agrees that the NFL could and should do some of this better.  They don't seem to be interested in fixing it.  I mean, I'm sure someone in the NFL offices looked at the calls and non-calls in the passing game in the Bucs-Bills game and could see a problem.  I don't know why they do something about it.  

 

The latest scourge on the came is offensive holding.   They allow the offensive lineman to put their arms on the outside shoulders of the rushing linemen, and there's obviously some holding going on there all day, every day.  Then, when the back changes direction and the defender changes direction, the offensive lineman is seen holding and it gets called.   Well, come on, if you're going to let them hold the defender when the guy is rushing straight in, you have to cut the offensive lineman some slack at the instand the change of direction happens.   Offensive holding calls are ruining the run game.  

 

 

 

College football to me now seems like a lot of replays interrupted by 3 or 4 football plays occasionally. admittedly don't watch a  lot of college football.  While watching bowl games I'll see what they do and change my opinion if warranted.

 

As to the bolded I think you are right. Complicated rules and bad referees give the NFL some control over the games outcome which they don't want to give up IMHO.  with them now being in bed with gambling I see it probably getting worse.

This isn't a novel concept, I don't believe. If I remember correctly, Bill Belichick floated the idea years ago. To fix the reffing issue, make every play/infraction challengeable with the caveat that you get two wrong challenges per game (punishable by yardage and/or losing a timeout).

 

The big pushback on this would be that it would seriously slow the game down (especially if you're of the thought that there is holding on every play) but I think if you give more manpower and authority to off-field officials who are reviewing plays as they happen, this would minimize the delay. The way it is now, 90% of the time the tv viewer knows whether a challenge is going to be successful way earlier than the on-field refs receive the message and announce it. The process is incredibly ridiculous if you think about it.

No officials actually at the game should EVER be involved in "reviewing" a play or call.  That's a crazy and mickey mouse way to do it; and it's how the NFL always has done it, of course.  

 

It should ALL be coming from a panel of off-field professional reviewers who have all the TV screens in front of them etc.  

 

What they say goes.

 

They are doing that now, from time to time, when calls get mysteriously reversed despite no challenge.

 

It's fast and efficient.

The nfl 💯 showed their cards with the entire reviewing PI situation.  The NFL knew how terrible the rams saints sitch was and that they had to, at least, look like they were attempting to fix the problem (by allowing PIs to be reviewed).  Once they allowed PIs to be reviewed, it could’ve went one of two ways.  1) they could’ve used this as a way to eliminate awful penalties that were ruining their game or 2) show the world that they didn’t really want to eliminate these awful penalties and were only doing this to appease the masses that were calling BS.  They purposely rejected every reviewed PI (without having to answer to the rejections) so they can say that it didn’t work and they could go back to having the power that they crave. 
 

the fact that reviewable PIs were  eliminated after one season and carried out in the fashion that they were is just more blatant evidence to me that the NFL uses the referees to influence the game to their liking. 
 

btw- the non call vs Diggs in TB not only had a huge effect on the game line and money line bets…..but it cashed in every Bills o/u 11.5 bet for the casino.  It was one of the highest placed win o/u bets of the year.  Vegas won big with the Bills not hitting 12 wins. So did the NFL

My two bugt changes- no more crews of geriatrics. They are too old to keep up on the field, let them do booth review part. Secondly put three officials in a booth to call the definite things, Offside, delay of game, facemask etc. The things that don't need discretion. Allow 4 officials on field to call only a few things but have a true standard. Too many things for any one person to handle.

I think the Sky Judge concept (born in the XFL, FYI. Most NFL innovations come from rival leagues) is working out great. If something is obvious on TV, just correct the call. Don't go through a ritual with red flags and challenges.
