Closing politics boards elsewhere

I mentioned this deep in some thread but FinHaven closed their politics board recently. With The Departure, things have gotten more civil here but another unhealthy echo chamber of intolerance could easily form if we let it. Or PPP could just be shut down without much change in TBD.

Here’s the FinHaven message.

Dear members,

We would like to address the recent change to the terms of service in regards to politics on Finheaven.

Due to the Political and War Forum causing rifts among our membership we have decided shut down the PoFo and we are no longer allowing political content on the site. This is now included in the Terms of Service.

This means you are not allowed to post politcal comments, opinions or pictures on the site at all. If you do post any politcal content on the site you will receive a PM reminding you that this type of content is not allowed and your content will be deleted. If you continue to post politcal content after the initial warning it will result in receiving infraction points that could lead to being banned from the site.

So let's keep the site focused on Dolphins football and the other forums focused on their topics. We have forums for college sports, other sports and the off topic stuff in the Lounge if you feel like you need a break from talking about the Dolphins.

Thank you,
-Finheaven staff-

Unfortunately folks will drift to their own echo chambers with like minded individuals, which will just inflate division and ignorance. We are at a time when problem solving for all the issues facing the country is needed, but no one understands the value of discussion and compromise

The Dolphins have a message board? 😂

I went there to see what the fan base thought of Fitz vs. Tua a few weeks ago and that's when I saw their politics statement. Sounds like they had a PPP that went sour.

Perfectly said. For the most part, this board is now more centrist. The Departed were less left or right and more conspiratorial. But the defining characteristic here was a race to be viciously uncivil, and I'm far from being guilty of being terrible myself.

That's why it's nice to see Lehnard over here, and most of the people here treating him respectfully. Shows that it's possible to be civil without having an echo chamber on a message board. We don't need intolerance of ideas: We do need intolerance of incivility.

Of course we still have trolls (TBBills and Unforgiven, himself one of The Departed) and it would be nice to eject them but things are a lot less hot over here these days. If PPP were to stay, and I'm still not sure that's a good idea, a bigger *civil* tent would be nice.

I am guilty of getting too hot under the collar myself at times.  Feel free to call me out if I do so.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, and all that. The root of almost all of our problems at the moment is less in disagreement IMO, and more in incivility, made possible hiding behind keyboards. The things we say here we'd never say to the parent sitting next to us at our kid's soccer game.

When a whole portion of the population literally has to rely on lies and misinformation, it's no wonder it's difficult have civil debate. The Trump phenomenon is a real dark spectacle that has infected our culture to the point where you can't have much of a debate.

the only chat boards I frequent are Bills related and all have political sub  forums.

What I have experienced is this: each political forum has a majority of posters with the same basic ideologies (aka echo chamber)  Wether the prevailing sentiments being  Pro Trump or anti Trump depends on the board. But in all cases Ive seen a majority whom share similar views with a decided minority of opposing views (whom are seen as trolls) wether that is their intention or not,  troll is what they are labeled. Bringing up counterpoints or opposing views in an echo chamber is labeled "trolling" when in fact it may just be the desire to bring opposing views .

Reading that the Dolphins abolished their political forum doesn't surprise me. I think political chat is so polarizing and fervent that it tends to bring out the worst in people and when you factor in the anonymity of being behind a keyboard makes it even easier to be personally insulting and ugly.

Perhaps the regulars of that dolphin political board will find a way to recongregate elsewhere as what occurred here.  Me personally I like to read both sides and then make up my mind. But to find both sides of any political discussion with any depth or civility on one board is a unicorn Ive not found.     And I would be shocked if it exists.

People didn't leave this sub because of a need to retreat with like minded people only.

They left bc there are far too many people here that don't understand how to separate attacking the individual poster vs attacking the idea without attacking the individual poster.

In my 1000s of posts I maybe insulted a poster I won't name maybe 2 or 3x because that poster spends his days looking for individuals to attack which included me.  Don't get me wrong.  I was born before 1990 so literally nothing offends me and my skin is quite thick.

But that to me is what should be banned.  It's simple to police.  This nonsense about what topics should or shouldn't be brought up in the TSW (covid) is really quite nauseating.  And it's because when someone says we should be at games, all hell breaks loose when it absolutely shouldn't.

People need lessons in civility but they also need to get some thick f..ing skin and sack up and understand its OK people think the opposite you do and don't be surprised when you find those people.

Well, a lot of the people who left are exactly the ones that simply attacked without end. I mean one poster was loved by all the others who left because he called anyone that supported the Democrats "an idiot." It was his thing and he was recognized for that and emulated.

Most of the attackers are gone a few republican cult members left here but they are taken care of quickly.

If they shut this one down it wouldn't matter to me. It would stop the ability of these cult members spreading lies and bull#### about things like fraud or masks

Erm...that's exactly what DR was first suspended and then banned for.

I'm not going to speak for or defend anybody.  If that's what he did fine.  I don't read every post from either side or follow all that happens between people here.

I'm telling you those should be the norms.

And TBBills should've been banned weeks ago.

You said people left this forum because people here were attacking individuals. DR was first suspended, then banned for exactly that, as SDS explained.

And The Departed followed The Prophet.

Agreed, but I assume that's just for trolling not callouts. He's on block for me so I don't see his stuff except when it's quoted.

The bigger issue is somebody that's fairly sane will encounter a conspiracy nut and then follow them down that rabbit hole to the point they become radicalized.

I'm sure, like so many fans before them, they've been lured by the fool's gold that is Fitzmagic.  But we...Bills fan...already know he'll throw the pick late in the fourth quarter EVERY SINGLE TIME.
