Things are a heck of a lot better than a hundred years ago. Not sure why the modern Democratic Party scares you so much. Huge majorities of the elderly today owe their easy lives to Democratic Party policies. A hundred years ago, the elderly lived shorter poorer lives. Now they are one of the wealthiest groups in society. And black people can now now move into the middle class, thanks largely to the civil rights movement. Local government is more responsive to the needs and wants of its citizens because it’s leaders reside in the same neighborhoods and live under similar conditions, and face direct personal consequences for corruption. Roads existed before the income tax. Fire and police departments existed before the income tax. The military existed before the income tax.
