Why the Pats have the best short-pass game in the NFL

Recommended Posts

Yes...at that time, they were...I agree.....

NE's success however dwarfs what SF did.....7 SB appearances and 5 trophies is incredible, but the stat that really jumps out at me is the 11 AFCCG appearances in 16 years...that is just absurd....

But we are all perfectly willing to just call them the greatest, even when their run defies logic AND they have a history of deceit. Again, ask yourself if they are truly the GOAT's, why even bother with balls and videos?

Every time some athlete in the past performs at a super-human level, it always comes out they were doing something. Bonds, Sosa, McGuire, Clemons, Lance Armstrong...all heroes, all held up as idols by the media. Then the truth comes out. If it's too good to be true...it usually isn't.

I'm still convinced they exploit the helmet mic and it's some version of McDoucheDaniels yelling out a read in the headset. Add to that Brady looks and talks like he is on adderral.

Most folks will laugh at both of those statements though, oh well.

The trick when cheating is to be judicious. I'm sure they don't do it every play. Just when they need to. And don't rely on just one fix.

this is almost too stupid to respond to but...

1. there is still zero proof or even circumstantial evidence that the balls were tampered with....taping signals was LEGAL at the time spygate took place, the patriots were punished for the location of the camera, not the use of it.

additionally, you do realize every NFL dynasty has cheated right?

70s Steelers were roided up, 80s 49ers admitted to using stick um and were caught/punished for salary cap violations, 90s broncos caught violating the salary cap and their o-linemen were caught greasing their jerseys.

and for modern teams, why are the proven cheating of the other 31 ignored?

Browns were punished for texting the coaches on the sidelines during play

Falcons were punished for pumping in crowd noise

Giants were punished for having radios to communicate to Manning after the headset shut off point

2. what do a bunch of steroid era baseball players have to do with football? you're also suffering from major confirmation bias. here's a sample of all time greats that produced absurd #s with no steroids:

Gretzky

Orr

Lemieux

Jeter

Henderson

Maddux

Aaron

Ruth

Mays

Mantle

Jordan

Bird

Magic

Kobe

Montana

Moss

Sanders

Occam's Razor.

They cheated to get there 3 maybe 4 times. (and or got help from the Refs via the Tuck, and or Just give it to them)

They push the limits ...I will give you that....But ask yourself why every single player that goes there for some time always say...the expectations are higher in NE...they work harder in NE....

I think it's a combination of hard work, Brady + BB, and exploiting every little thing available to get a W on Sunday....do they push the limit ? Yep...Is it why they are so good and so consistent ? I would say no.....

They are probably the most watched team by the league offices....if something is done outside the rules, we'll know about it....that deflategate thing was so ludicrous...just silly stuff....4 games suspension for deflating balls...They destroyed the Colts 45-7....the Colts balls were also deflated...Aaron Rodgers admitted he likes his with more pressure than the legal limit...most players thought it was stupid...and what does NE do ? They win the SB and shove it back in Goodell's face....

They are just that good....the day Brady leaves will be a great day and it's coming....

Occam's Razor.

The tuck rule was stupid, and they since changed it, but in 2001, it was the rule...It was applied correctly...that's not NE's fault.....the same play was called earlier in that same season....

Never understood why people bring that up vs NE....there was a rule, the refs applied it correctly....

Occam's Razor would say...they are just that good....as opposed to... they cheat and get away with for 17 years.....while the rest of the league keeps naming Brady the best player in the NFL....

Let's talk about Occam's Razor in 2027 after they win 10 more AFC championships and 7 more Super Bowls with a 49 year old Tom Brady.

Ah, the classic 3 stages of a Patriots cheating scandal, all in a single post!

Stage 1: We didn't do it

Stage 2: If we did it (which we didn't), then it didn't give us a competitive advantage

Stage 3: If we did it (which we didn't), and it gave us a competitive advantage (which it didn't), then everyone else is cheating too

And no, videotaping wasn't legal when they were caught and punished for it...so spake the letter sent to every NFL team back in 2006:

“No video recording devices of any kind are permitted to be in use in the coaches’ booth, on the field, or in the locker room during the game,” the league’s Game Operations Manual reads. He also cited a letter that the league sent to teams in September 2006.

“Videotaping of any type, including but not limited to taping of an opponent’s offensive or defensive signals, is prohibited on the sidelines,” it read, in part, a phrase indicating foreshadowing or the sense that the rule needed clarification.

As to Deflategate, well, explain this:

A team equipment handler who calls himself "The Deflator" illegally takes the footballs from the locker room to the field unsupervised, stopping along the way at a restroom that is not monitored by video. He's in there for long enough to (according to independent experiments) deflate 12 footballs appreciably. When questioned about why he stopped at that restroom, he responded that he dropped the balls to his left and used a urinal to his right, at which time he was informed that the restroom actually doesn't have a urinal.

Then, of course, there's the fact that Jastremski basically admits to something being up when he texts Brady that the team's equipment manager "knows it's unlikely that you did it yourself".

But hey, let's stick to the "nothing to see here" narrative.

Did it make a real difference in the game? No, I can't believe that it did.

But please stop acting like your team is holier-than-thou when it comes to this stuff--they will literally try anything to get ahead.

None of those other dynasty had the GOAT QB and the GOAT HC together...at the same time.....As I said, the good news is it's almost over...we'll never see a team like the 2001-2017 NE team ever again....that's also a good news...Their dominance is hurting the league....if they win the SB again this year ( they are the favorite ) things will only get worse....The entire AFC is waiting for those 2 to retire...

Putting cameras in the wrong spot ( Spygate ) and deflating balls ( if they did it ) doesn't explain they're dominance...they are that good..it sucks, but it is what it is....everything else we hear about NE cheating is made up by jealous fans and players IMO....the communication things is the weirdest...communications are controlled by the league, not the teams....couple of years ago, our Bills had issue in Foxboro...everyone started to scream " cheats "....come to find out, Rex's staff were to stupid to check the batteries and they ran out....it happens in every stadium....it's somehow a story when NE is involved...you never hear about it when it happens to Houston playing in Cleveland for example....

Not only best qb an coach, but also look at all the crappy coaches in the nfl in the past 17 years. You can count the number of good ones on one hand. Even then they dont hold a candle to coaches of other eras.

Armstrong got caught, but he was still the best cyclist by far. Every top cyclist in that sport was doing the same thing. The playinh field was equal

Philly, You make a good point. But, may I ask you how you came up with your name??? lol when I saw it.

Ha . . . I used to be Fatty McButterpants, a reference to Kevin James' character on the King of Queens. Then I moved to Philadelphia about 3 1/2 years ago and swapped the Philly in . . .

I'm not laughing. The Pats* are a well-run organization with an ethos based in winning... regardless of how you get there.

In terms of getting wins, they do it the best. But how they get those wins is another story entirely.

You could call offensive pass interference on almost every Patriots passing down. They do it on almost every play. The best because Brady "scans the field"? No. The best because Brady knows when someone is going to get picked and be open and the refs won't call a thing.

....certainly agree.....all 32 clubs push the envelope to some degree, some more so than others.....Pats got caught and the other 31 were snickering behind closed doors...of course the rules/regulations are now a 6 volume set.....14 AFCE titles and 5 Lombardis may garner some attention as well (COUGH).....
