Prominent emancipation proponents argued that simply abolishing slavery would lead to swift and near-permanent injustice, by creating an unskilled, uneducated, illiterate racial underclass. It turns out that they were 100% correct, and that a gradual emancipation, inclusive of the education and apprenticeship of former slaves building towards their complete freedom; as advocated for by men like Stonewall Jackson would have likely done far more to undo the legacy of slavery in America. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Instead, they saw protesters violently clashing with members of a local Confederate group who were set to march in the town’s 72nd annual Christmas parade later this month. So to be safe, the town canceled it. In a Wednesday night video message, Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones announced that the town’s downtown board of directors voted to cancel the Dec. 14 Christmas parade out of concern that “outside agitators” would show up to protest or defend the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy who planned to march in the event.
