With the first month of 2014 in the books, the "Garbage Season" gets a little more tolerable, as movie studios hope to find a gem or two that stand out amidst all the Oscare fare. With the upcoming Spring Season right around the corner, studios are also hoping to whet the appetite for those bigger titles and will also be promoting the tentpole titles of Summer as well. Two movies(from the same studio) in particular this month, one a remake, the other a push-back from this past Christmas, have been getting major commercial time on television, bringing high awareness to both of them. Now will all this ad time equate to big bucks? We shall see.

Columbia & MGM bring us the remake of "Robocop". In 2028 Detroit, when Alex Murphy - a loving husband, father and good cop - is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. The hope is to reinvent this franchise and turn it into something much bigger than it's 80's predecessor. It's big budget, big cast and PG-13, will help immensely. Starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel & Samuel L. Jackson.

Columbia also looks for gold in the delayed-for-release "The Monuments Men", both written, directed and starring George Clooney. An unlikely World War II platoon are tasked to rescue art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their owners. The big ensemble cast includes: Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville & Cate Blanchett.

For animated fans who have seen "Frozen" one too many times, will finally get some new animation with Warner Bros. "The LEGO Movie". An ordinary LEGO minifigure, mistakenly thought to be the extraordinary MasterBuilder, is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil LEGO tyrant from gluing the universe together. Starring the voices of Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Berry, Alison Brie, Anthony Daniels, Charlie Day, Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, Will Forte & Morgan Freeman.

Kevin Costner stars in "3 Days To Kill". A dying Secret Service Agent trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter is offered an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange for one last assignment. Also starring Hailee Steinfeld, Amber Heard & Connie Nielsen.

In "Winter's Tale", A burglar falls for an heiress as she dies in his arms. When he learns that he has the gift of reincarnation, he sets out to save her. Starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Russell Crowe & Will Smith.

In "Pompeii", A slave turned gladiator finds himself in a race against time to save his true love, who has been betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, he must fight to save his beloved as Pompeii crumbles around him. Starring Kit Harington, Carrie Anne-Moss, Emily Browning & Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

In "Non-Stop", An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic flight after receiving a series of text messages that put his fellow passengers at risk unless the airline transfers $150 million into an off-shore account. Starring Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong'o & Anson Mount.

"Endless Love" is the story of a privileged girl and a charismatic boy whose instant desire sparks a love affair made only more reckless by parents trying to keep them apart. Starring Gabriella Wilde, Alex Pettyfer, Bruce Greenwood & Ropert Patrick.

In "Son of God", The life story of Jesus is told from his humble birth through his teachings, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection. Starring Diego Morgado, Amber Rose Revah, Greg Hicks & Adrain Schiller.

In "About Last Night", New love for two couples as they journey from the bar to the bedroom and are eventually put to the test in the real world. Starring Kevin Hart, Joy Bryant, Regina Hall & Bryan Callen.

Finally in "Vampire Academy", Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, half human/vampire, guardians of the Moroi, peaceful, mortal vampires living discretely within our world. Her legacy is to protect the Moroi from bloodthirsty, immortal Vampires, the Strigoi. This is her story. Starring Zoey Deutch, Lucy Fry, Danila Kozlovsky & Olga Kurylenko.

I've got a stack of pre-paid movie tickets burning a hole in my pocket, but nothing is catching my eye lately. The cast of Monuments Men might be a bit persuasive, but otherwise I don't see much potential this month.

February usually is not a month for potential. Things will get better, although March is not looking like a stellar month either.

As for "Monuments Men", the cast is very impressive, but why did Columbia move this movie from Christmas to February?

Buyer beware.

Robo cop - I can wait for TV.

Leggo, I'm told its not made for little kids so I just don't get it.

Pompeii, meh that all die in the end. Back to the wall Jon Snow

I have not seen "Lego" so I might completely wrong, but well written animation is entertaining for adults and children.

I would cite the OLD Warner-Brothers theatrer cartoon shorts and more recent "techno" animation movies like "Shrek", as examples.

I look forward to seeing "The Lego Movie". Although I thought the original title, "Lego: The Piece of Resistance", was far better.

I also wish that they could have gotten Michael Keaton to be the voice of Batman. Oh well.

Bump

Anyone see Pompeii?

I watched it on a plane trip last week.

Why is it that Keifer sucks in everything else BUT 24?

I know you are being somewhat sarcastic, but come on, "Stand By Me", "A Few Good Men", "Dark City". Kiefer didn't suck in those movies.

Yep.

And in that he literally sucked.

Thank you, Thank you.

maybe it was because i was pretty young when it came out, or maybe that movie was filled with my kind of cheese, but i loved that movie, and thought that he played a good part. having said that, i tried watching that movie a few years ago and couldn't do it. Edited by swnybillsfan
