Jets’ cap number scares off GMs

Recommended Posts

Good summary of jets cap situation from NY Post :

ESPN reported yesterday the Jets are $19.4 million over the projected 2013 salary cap, the most in the NFL, and the perception of the situation may be scaring GM candidates away....The Jets can easily maneuver their way under the cap by releasing linebacker Bart Scott, linebacker Calvin Pace, tackle Jason Smith and safety Eric Smith next month. That would save them $30.7 million. You can add another $1.5 million if they release quarterback Tim Tebow, as expected. Those moves would put them $12.8 million under the cap.

The problem for the Jets is that leaves them with only 10 players who were starters this year under contract — QB Mark Sanchez, C Nick Mangold, T D’Brickashaw Ferguson, WR Santonio Holmes, WR Stephen Hill, NT Sione Po’uha, DE Muhammad Wilkerson, LB David Harris, CB Antonio Cromartie and CB Darrelle Revis. They will probably tender tackle Austin Howard, who is a restricted free agent, to bring the number to 11.

And any GM would love to be rid of Sanchez and possibly Holmes if not for very hard to unload contracts

Rough times - who here didnt see it coming though?

Everyone was complaining when the Jets were loading up with high priced free agent after high priced free agent. This is the result--the house of cards is tumbling down and they're going to have to cut half of their starters. The Jets financial mismanagement is a glaring example of how not to create long-term franchise prosperity. Someone, however, will want to play super hero and try to save the day.

Right, of the 11 they have/can have contracted, the most expensive Sanchez theyd love to get rid of. Two others Holmes (Lisfranc), Revis (ACL) are big question marks.

And those last two include a head case that runs his mouth, and a guy liable to hold out any given season.

Love it.

It is an interesting case study. I also think they went for broke believing they were on the cusp of being a potential SB winner.

Bart Scott, Calvin Pace and David Harris...Which one do you think ends up with the Bills next year? There's no way they sign all three. I'd be glad to see us pick up Scott.

The only one worth a crap is Harris. He is worth taking a good look at.
