A pass rush specialist with 2 sacks in 4 years?

That might be a bit of a stretch.

Let me clarify, the knock on Moore has always been his deficiency as a run defender. He has displayed the traits one looks for in a pass rusher, however, until now that potential jas not been fulfilled. The coaching staff kept him over Merriman because of that potential, and now, finally he is showing glimpses of becoming that guy. Is he elite?no, does he have an extensive resume that indicates his recent success is sustainable? No.

but if given the choice between labeling him a "stout run defender" or "pass rush specialist" I would choose the latter

The kid has talent, thats all im saying

He's playing really well. He goofed and grabbed Tannehill's mask on that excellent chase-down, but otherwise I've been happy with him.

I'm not going to get on him for that. That stuff can happen. Blowing up the line of scrimmage and getting to the quarterback is what matters to me. It's a freak accident that doesn't normally occur on a play like that. How often do you see guys getting called for facemask on a sack? Late hit, sure? Facemask, rarely.

I wouldn't call it being a downer; it's been obvious for a long time that you understand what you're watching and you're just being accurate and a realist.

I really appreciate the kids effort and I'm happy for him that he's been able to keep a job in this league and make himself some scratch.

But he's a non-factor in the run game and is usually well-handled by NFL OT's.

If you told me we lost Anderson, and Kelsey on that end - the play we are getting out of the 3rd man in is plenty to make me happy, but its also still very replaceable depth/rotation play. A lot of physically talented guys kick around the league on the fringe of making a 53 with enough talent to see the field but not enough to own a job. He strikes me in that grouping still.

One of those "good for what he is, but don't forget what he is" type situations. Could be wrong but typically a few years in its not the light coming on as much as being an adequate stop gap and a good fit at the moment.

Fair enough; he's talented and driven enough to have carved himself out a nice little NFL career.

But the amount of effusive praise I've been seeing strikes me as a little bit outsized for what he really is.

Far better than I could have ever put it.

Thank you

Guy is not a bad player, but from what I can find on him he has had an injury plagued career.

According to what I have read at USC he was used primarily as a run stopper always playing the strong side and overshadowed by the Trojans other NFL prospects Brian Cushing, Rey Maualuga, and Clay Matthews at LB (talk about an embarrassment of freaking riches on a college team, how would the Bills like those guys at LB). I am not sure where the pass-rush specialist label comes from. He has proto-typical body frame of a DE, and is not that tweener mold DE/OLB like Maybin

Knee surgery at USC, but still ran a respectable 4.7 at the combine and picked in 2009 by Tampa Bay. He then had a groin injury, knee injury, and shoulder injury and spent much of the time on injured reserve. With the emergence of guys who were healthy he became expendable. Cannot blame the Bucs there, he was released around the same time the Bucs jettisoned a Bills' castoff McCargo - yeah, remember that guy Troup version 1.0 (two high round D-tackles the Bills have taken and both could never stay on the field due to back issues, there has got to be a better way to check for that propensity before blowing a high draft pick).

Moore has a very typical NFL washout story, but maybe it was a bit too early to close the book on this kid. It would be a kind of nice to see what kind of player he could be if he can shed the injury bug for a season or two.

Moore in top 10 for pass rush productivity

Posted by Chris Brown on November 15, 2012 – 2:19 pm

It might sound surprising knowing Kyle Moore only began to get significant playing time after Mark Anderson went down with a knee injury five weeks ago, but based on a per snap basis, the stat crunchers and film reviewers at Pro Football Focus have Kyle Moore as a top 10 player when it comes to pass rush productivity.

Moore currently ranks ninth in the league in pass rush productivity among outside pass rushers. PFF made a separate listing of interior pass rushers. Here’s the top 10.

Rank Name Team Pass Rush Snaps Total Pressure PRP

1 Von Miller DEN 260 51 15.7

2 Justin Houston KC 155 30 15.6

3 Charles Johnson CAR 267 47 14.1

4 Cameron Wake MIA 339 56 13.2

5 DeMarcus Ware DAL 233 37 13.1

6 Lamarr Woodley PIT 138 22 12.5

7 Chris Long SL 304 48 12.3

8 Bruce Irvin SEA 189 27 11.9

9 Kyle Moore BUF 100 15 11.8

10 Clay Matthews GB 291 42 11.7

PFF calculates pass rush productivity by adding up sacks, hits and hurries (with hits and hurries worth three quarters of sacks) then they divide that figure by the number of pass rushes, multiply by 100 and that’s the PRP rating.

Just for the record, I have been calling Kyle Moore the best DE on the team since early in preseason. Everyone laughed at me...

Good call and you are correct. He has been the best pure pass rusher this year when he has been on the field. Its the consistent hurries and pressure. He was getting them on the majority of snaps last night. Merrimans sack was also partly due to Moore. He was tremendous last night! I didn't even know about those stats on him. Just solely from watching the film on him.

Glad there's a thread on him. He brought some good pressure (and unlike Mario, had to do it against Long).

I said a couple weeks ago announcers have a big impact on fans' perception of games. Everyone's praising Merriman for making 1 play that Mayock went out of his way to break down on replay. And people are arguing about this kid? Meh, I thought Mayock snubbed him a bit by never mentioning him.

I like what I see.

He has that prototypical long athletic pass rush build and it seems like he's getting better every week.

Also he plays with good pad level and body lean which minimizes the disadvantages of being a longer athlete.

Greater arm length (and overall body length) is only indicative of talent on the OFFENSIVE line.

trust me

Is it just me, or is Moore looking like a good player, esp with Williams on the other side. He seems to have more strength and speed than Kelsey. I'd like to see Moore as the starter, and Anderson/Kelsey (when healthy) rotate in as needed.

I've never really been a big Kelsay fan. I would be more than happy with Kyle Moore playing the other side. He does seem to have a more explosive first move than Kelsay and what we probably were expecting to see from Mark Anderson.

No, its not just you. Moore has been terrific! He has been our most consistent end at applying hurries and pressures to the quarterback. Our best DE this year IMO. I agree that he should be starting on one end with Mario Williams on the other. Anderson is gone most likely for the year. Kelsay should only come in as a substitute. Kelsay is going to be the odd one out at the end of the year I bet.

Nice depth player, No moore no less. Good teams always have guys like him. What is it year 5 for the guy?

He is what he is. Good game for him.

I think it took this guy named James Harrison a few years to get it going, and once he did he was unstoppable. (until he got old).

HAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, the people dismissing Moore because of the flatness of his early career curve are oversimplifying things a bit.

While those players ARE the exceptions, there's still plenty of players who took the long route to success. You'd think that with Bills such as Fred Jackson that those lessons would be remembered.

The Bills were tormented last night by Cameron Wake, a guy who was undrafted and went to Canada before becoming an NFL star.

C'mon people. Don't be so dismissive/dogmatic.

Look at Moore's actual play.

What do your EYES tell you?
