21 yard punt?

Wow, that 21 yard punt at the end of the game was killer uh? 21 yards is high school material. Just another nail in the coffin for Chan and Buddy Nix.

This team is built with losers......no heart, no will to win.

I actually think DeHaven should get more criticism for that punt that Potter. DeHaven needs to get over his desire to punt the ball out of bounds - it's not working and hasn't worked all season. Punt the ball to the middle and cover it. It's what every other team in the league does and they do it successfully just about all of the time.

I agree. Moorman apparently got cut because he kicked 60-yard bombs, instead of kicking it out of bounds to DeHaven's satisfaction.

I've asked this before, but why do we even need DeHaven? His strategy is to have a kick-off specialist kick the ball through the endzone and a punter kick the ball out of bounds. What else is there to coach?

The funny thing is that it saves DeHaven's butt too. If the punter shanks it out of bounds the punter will be blamed for a shank. But if a punt is returned for a big gain it's DeHaven who would get the blame. He's created a system where he can't be blamed. It's brilliant!

At a minimum assess the situation and direct accordingly. When the game is on the line and the wind is gusting like a mother, don't ask your rookie punter who wasn't even on an NFL roster a few weeks ago to execute a kick in bad conditions with little to no margin for error - just tell him to get the ball the hell out of there and tell the rest of your special teams just to stay in their lanes and do their job (plus you have ruvell Martin so no worries right. /sarcasm)

I also blame dehaven for the shank last week. There's a time and a place for trying to execute low percentage kicks with a kicker with no experience. I think Powell will be fine - they just need to be reasonable in how they work with him at least initially.

Actually, I don't think you can/should call it a shank. He's right footed & he kicked it WAY left. When you shank it, it goes off the outside of your foot & goes right. Kicking the ball THAT far off target to the LEFT is more than that. What I suspect happened was he was instructed to kick it OOB, to the left, his aim/accuracy was probably off a few yards (which could result in a loss of ~10 yards distance in that scenario), then failing to get a good spiral on the ball, the wind got hold of it & sent to WAY LEFT. Combination of poor execution & a dumb plan given the circumstances.
