Now i realize there are many that think backs are a dime a dozen or that Fred's age doesn't warrant a long term deal; Additionally there's been a spark from Spiller but Fred Jackson is the Bills. Marshawn's signing is also a slap in the face to Fred. Fred is the better of the two. Now Nix has stated in the past that "we want to keep Fred and that he is a big part of what we are trying to to do in Buffalo" however he also seemed agitated when asked if and when Fred will be rewarded w a new contract and the response: "Last time i checked he's currently under contract for another year isn't he?" He is under contract another year. Free Agency starts in a couple of weeks, then the draft, then signing drafted players. I would be shocked if they get around to Fred before summer at least - no reason to. Nix has stated numerous times that he wants to sign Jackson to an extension. Jackson has been told this. JoeF Posted March 5, 2012 Share Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) Keep in mind that without the injury Freddie may have been headed to an MVP year and that we were 1-5 without him and 5-5 with him. Based on quick analysis of the new contracts and discounting 25% for Fred's age -- you are looking at $6M a year current value (top tier at $8-10M). Fred signed an extension for 4 years/$7.5M total in 2009 covering 09, 10, 11 and 12. I would add 2 years and $15M to the existing contract--$10M up front and keep him through 2014. I think that is fair for everyone--takes care of Fred without killing us. His base is likely about $2M for this year so you are giving him $10M in cash up front and then paying him $2.5M in base in 2013, 2014 which is back up money. End result, over six years he will make $22.5M - the first two of those were as a part-time starter and the third year he is a FT player but injury shortened. If I were the GM, I'd certainly want to see how this year plays out. He's not going to command big money on next year's free-agent market, considering his age. He won't sign for less than 20M guaranteed. They'll end up at 17.5M guaranteed over 3 years. If that's too rich for you then say goodbye to Fred. Because he's our best player He may be that, which makes him all the more of a bargain. Why tie up more money in a player who is under contract--and with the way that Spiller subbed for him (according to many here), he can't reasonably hold out this off season. Actually....when you think about it for all the bashing Nix has taken on this board he has been a man of his word. He resigns his own starting caliber players instead of letting them get away like the bills have in the past. The team appears to be headed in the right direction. It's one thing to argue he's peaked, too old, under contract, etc. Whether I agree with it or not, those are at least reasonable arguments. Given the nature of Fred's injury it is not a concern and it's annoying to keep seeing that used as an excuse as though all injuries are equal. That's all.
