Now that the Oscars have been handed out, the films of yesteryear and the garbage season of the start of 2012 can make way for the surprisingly big month of March and the brief Spring Season of films. The month of March is so loaded with big titles you'd think that the Summer Season was starting earlier this year. What is most interesting is that most of the big titles are filled with young up and coming actors instead of established stars as most of the studios are banking on premise to excite moviegoers, and that may be enough.

While Disney awaits to unleash their first collaborative effort with Marvel in the form of "The Avengers", we first get an early appetizer from the mouse house as they take a new step in their relationship with their super production company stablemate Pixar. For the first time Disney & Pixar enter the realm of live action movies with the big budgeted "John Carter". Based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "John Carter of Mars"; Transplanted to Mars, a Civil War vet discovers a lush planet inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter a princess who is in desperate need of a savior. Reports of a budget reaching $200 million, Disney/Pixar is taking a great risk with this movie as Carter is nowhere nearly as popular as Burroughs' other fictitious character Tarzan. Throw in that lead actor Taylor Kitsch is only best known for the tv series "Friday Night Lights" and for his role as Gambit in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", the odds will be stacked against this very ambitious project. Still audiences appreciate new and fresh ideas coming from Hollywood, and this sci-fi/adventure could reach many a moviegoer looking for something exciting. Also starring Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Thomas Haden Church, Mark Strong & Ciaran Hinds.

Lionsgate also takes a bold step this month as they release the first of it's planned trilogy of movies "The Hunger Games". Based on the popular series of books by Suzanne Collins; The story is set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match. Many industries will be watching as this is the biggest project that independent studio Lionsgate has ever distributed. Not to mention the fans of the book series who will be most curious to see what type of rating this movie will receive, due to the graphic content of the books. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Stanley Tucci & Donald Sutherland.

Warner Bros. returns to Greek mythology with continuing story of Perseus with "Wrath of the Titans". Perseus embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, who has been targeted for capture by his traitorous son, Ares, and his brother, Hades. Many a moviegoer is scratching their heads on this sequel, since the "Clash of the Titans" re-make received a lukewarm reception. Nevertheless, Warner Bros. feels confident that there are fans who want more from this story. We shall see. Starring Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Rosamund Pike, Ralph Fiennes, Bill Nighy & Danny Huston.

After the success of "Despicable Me", Universal Studios & Illumination Entertainment re-team to bring us "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax". Based on the children's book; A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world. Universal & Illumination may have a more difficult time with this film than with "Me", but it has been a long time since an animated family movie was released, so the timing is right. Starring the voice talents of Danny DeVito, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Ed Helms & Betty White.

Jumping from the small screen to the big screen is "21 Jump Street". Starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as a pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring. Also starring Ice Cube.

Will Ferrell stars in the Spanish speaking "Casa de mi Padre". Scheming on a way to save their father's ranch, the Alvarez brothers find themselves in a war with Mexico's most feared drug lord. Also starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna, Nick Offerson & Genesis Rodriguez.

In the first of two Snow White movies we will see this year, we first get the comedy version; "Mirror Mirror". An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright. Starring Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, Sean Bean, Mare Winningham & Nathan Lane.

Eddie Murphy(remember him?)stars in "A Thousand Words". After stretching the truth on a deal with a spiritual guru, literary agent Jack McCall finds a Bodhi tree on his property. Its appearance holds a valuable lesson on the consequences of every word we speak. Also starring Cliff Curtis, Kerry Washington, Clark Duke & Allison Janney.

Ewan McGregor & Emily Blunt star in "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen". A fisheries expert is approached by a consultant to help realize a sheik's vision of bringing the sport of fly-fishing to the desert and embarks on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible possible. Also starring Amr Waked & Kristen Scott Thomas.

In "Friends with Kids", Two best friends decide to have a child together while keeping their relationship platonic, so they can avoid the toll kids can take on romantic relationships. Starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Edward Burns, Jon Hamm, Megan Fox, Adam Scott, Chris O'Dowd & Jennifer Westfeldt.

In "Project X", 3 high school seniors throw a birthday party to make a name for themselves. As the night progresses, things spiral out of control as word of the party spreads. Starring Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown & Dax Flame.

Finally in "Goon", Labeled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way. Starring Sean William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Alison Pill, Eugene Levy & Liev Schrieber.

I hope John Carter is well done since afterall it's the first real sci-fi story ever written. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'll be gladly corrected for the truth. It's prolly cheesy as hellz but it better not disappoint! Anyone with a brain will see the significance of this movie. But damn not enough brains to go around :-0

I've never read the book, but I am hoping it will be both a fun ride and a good story.

If you want to know the beginning of sci-fi as we kno it, it's the book to read and appreciate :) I have it but need to read it before seeing Riggins playin Carter. From the Earth to the Moon is a damn classic as well, although not Burroughs but Verne.

So this was written before anything by Verne?

Saw it this afternoon. Decent film, Blair Witch/Cloverfield type filming but it's all those teenager party films rolled into one, then multipled, aka Can't Hardly Wait, Superbad, etc.

Yeah, seems like it wouldn't be that much different.

Saw "John Carter" tonight.

Fun movie, although a bit long and probably a little too much story.

I can see why the rumors of a $250-300 million budget have made their rounds, there is a lot of CGI in this movie. Although I didn't think the CGI took away from the movie.

I hope this movie gets a strong acceptance from the public. It was nice to see a story as old as this one get the big screen treatment. Always good to see a fun sci-fi/adventure film.

With all the Hunger Games stuff I'm seeing, it makes me wonder if Arnold shows up in the end and kills everyone. Either that or maybe they can have him be an announcer who is forced to come out of retirement, only to be killed by the main character.
