  1. 1. Do you cut him, or let him work to get a roster spot?

    • Cut him, cut our losses, he's worthless and expensive.

    • Give him a chance, when he's on, he's good and he's a good locker room presence.

Agreed. If he's completely healthy, he's a force the opposing team has to game plan against. BUT the Bills can't put all their eggs in one basket. Buddy Needs to sign Impacting Young FAs on Defense Next Season for us to be good, Maybe firing Edwards will help as well. Give Wannstedt the Job.

He hasn't been a force in this league since Drew Bledsoe was quarterbacking the Bills and George Bush was in his first term as a president.

Had successful surgery been reported? I'm on board with bringing him back, I'm not very high on the long term development of any of these young guys we have. As long as he had the surgery and is already ready to rehab, why wouldn't you see what he's got next camp?

Well?

His surgery was a success, apparently, so now he's on to rehab. I say we give him a chance next training camp/pre season to make the team. He showed flashes during pre-season and even during the regular season. He's been great for the psyche of the team, imo. He's been a good ambassador as well.

You can't judge the "success" of this type of surgery until you know his full level of recovery.

If he can be evaluated by an independent team of sports medicine/orthopedic specialists and he participates fully in the off-season then he should get a shot to make the team.

Yep, Buddy is an idiot. Never coached football. Never spent any time as a scout. Has no idea how to break down film. The Bills are his very first NFL gig. Maybe the Bills can hire you to teach him the importance of edge rushers, amongst other things. I'm sure there's much you know that he's clueless about.

Great response. This take gets so tired. So fans should just shut up and not point out obvious flaws? I also noticed that you only attacked me not my point but go on.

He is dead weight. Another mistake for Buddy, and Merriman guaranteed $4 million next season. His body is deteriorating from the steriods, can never stay healthy. Why do you think no other teams wanted him. It's amazing how many Bills fans on here drink Buddy's koolaid. I mean he could take a crap in a box and mark it guaranteed and you all would buy it. For real

From B-Lo rumblings:

Next came Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News, who fleshed things out a bit. Gaughan laid out the two years as follows: Merriman would get a $1.5 million signing bonus amortized over three years (including 2010), base salaries of $2.75 million and $4 million in 2011 and 2012, $1 million in bonuses in both years of the deal, and $250K in guaranteed bonus money in 2012. He also reported $4 million worth of incentives and language built into the deal that would void guarantees should Merriman's Achilles injury resurface.

Today, FOXSports.com's Adam Caplan painted a slightly different picture, reporting that Merriman's deal would max at $16 million total over the two years, that $3 million of the total $4 million guaranteed in the deal could be voided by the Achilles clause, and breaking down the bonus money more specifically. This is how contract reporting works: we get the general idea, but the specifics are often fuzzy.

This is an Achilles injury, hence his money for 2012 is not guaranteed, hence he is not a risk at all. They have lost money on him, yes, but they can cut their losses in 2012 or get a hungry impact or depth player back at rush OLB. I fail to see the potential drawbacks here. He will compete with young guys for the job and if he keeps them off the field it will be because he looks good again.

Whiners gonna whine.

*EDIT: ($1MM Roster bonus if he's there on day 7 of next season).

Seeing as how Merriman wasn't even in the league when Bledsoe last QBd the Bills, I see your point.

GO BILLS!!!

Maybe they knew the risks and thought it was worth it. The horse is dead, man. Quit beating it.

I voted to keep him, this team still needs talent. If he heals properly, he is talented.

Totally. What I heard form Nix and Chan is everyone knew he was a gamble, and may continue to be, but he contributed to the team this year and it's not like he was taking a roster or depth chart Spot from some other amazing pass rusher.

I could see someone trying to have this argument about say a Parrish type situation, but not this one. The guys is a proven star and if they ever get his Achillies right he can play and add talent to the most anemic area of the team (pass rush). Don't care what stats say, he was making a difference on the field.

He built a team that has started the season 4-2, and has beaten two good teams the Pat (5-1), raiders (4-3) and narrowly lost to two (4-2) teams on the raod. They obliterated KC who is 3-3...

Unlike ramndom posters, who can spew any nonesense they like and comically write as if they would be entirley superior NFL franchise GM's, Buddy has some results to build his Kool Aid stand on.

Why not? Because he's shot! Do you seriously need more proof? Even when he was healthy (which has been one game in 4 years) he looked good against the worst O line in the NFL. Big deal. I'm sure he's a great guy and a leader but at this point the only thing he will be doing is taking reps away from others (that's if he can get onto the field.)

Hopefully Buddy gets it through his thick skull that an edge rusher is one of the most impactful positions in football and he drafts one before the 5th round. :wallbash:

He hasn't been healthy since he's been in a Bills uniform. He has needed the surgery for a couple of years now but tried to get by without.. Now he's had the surgery so might as well give him a shot to come back. He should have gotten the surgery last year.

Regardless of his health I'm sure we will draft an OLB early next year.

It is real simple, and there really isn't much to discuss.

Do the Bills have a salary cap problem?

No.

Is Merriman a distraction or causes harm to the team?

No. (He seems like a team guy and I wouldn't mind if he was hired as coach if he is done)

So you give him until Pre-Season to see if his lights go back "IN"?. . .or maybe "OUT"? Either way if he looks as dominant as he did this pre-season and doesn't get injured again you keep him on the team.

If he isn't healthy in Pre-Season you cut him and save the roster spot for a young guy.

(Also it'd be nice if that first round OLB you just drafted in the 2012 draft looks beastly in Pre-Season)

It is real simple, and there really isn't much to discuss.

He can't play. He can't play physically and even when he is on the field he's not effective. What else is there? He is a pretty expensive locker room cheerleader. It's over - move on. This is not how you build a Super Bowl contender by acquiring broken down veterans who can't play anymore.
